Hitching out

North towards Melaka or Kuala Lumpur

If arriving from Singapore, after passing through Malaysian immigration, walk east out of the Bus Station and find the road that leads to the freeway towards K.L. (See the Hitchwiki map for precise location). You want to hitch on the E14 "Johor Bahru Eastern Dispersal Link Expressway" which circles east around J.B. and becomes the E2 which is the Expressway heading north to Kuala Lumpur. There are plenty of cars and motorbike traffic leaving the Immigration/customs terminal, and down the ramp a bit trucks also join the road. One hitchhiker has hitched here a few times in recent years and each times it was quite fast to get a lift, but it usually take 3 or 4 rides to reach the first toll point called "Kempas Toll Plaza" or the next toll point about 6kms further called "Skudai Toll Plaza", which are both north of the city on the E2. Also cars will stop pretty quickly if you hitch directly on the Expressway. Just make sure there is a broad enough shoulder for cars to stop safely.
