Montana (Bulgarian: Монтана) is a city in northwest Bulgaria. It is located 50 km south of Danube river, 40 km northwest of Vratsa and 30 km east of the Serbian border.

Hitching out

South towards Sofia

There are two possibilities for reaching Sofia.

Road 81 is a smaller road in the mountains, but scenic and the shorter route to Sofia. Walk down Aleksander Stamboliiski bulevard to the end, then turn left and hitchhike there.

Road E79 is the major highway. You should go on the same street but after you should cross one circle.

North towards Vidin/the Romanian border

The A1/E79 takes you to Vidin. Locals told me there was some traffic on Fridays. I was there on a Sunday and not long before sunset and didn’t find anyone to give me the lift. Alternatively you could take the train (~3hrs) from Montana railway station to Vidin which would be 3,50€ (seems very hard to blackride).
