It always worked out for me, it changed and shaped me and i see the world and humanity different differently now than before.
I like to travel with just the very necessary things, because it makes me feel free. If you like a place, you will stay more days. If you don't like it at all, you just leave it, without worrying that you have to be there on time or that your car might break down, or whatever...
