The wiki principle of cooperatively sharing knowledge that turned Wikipedia to such a big success, also turned out to be a great way for creating a knowledge base for hitchhikers, to share their knowledge on hitchhiking and how to let people share unused space in cars.
The actual 1000th article of Hitchwiki is a page where hitchhikers can place their postcards that they have sent to friends, family, their drivers or other hitchhikers. These include short messages or even a scan of the original postcard.
The milestone of 1000 articles exemplifies the comeback of the hitchhiking culture. Each month thousands of people hitchhike all over the world; in many countries it is still a common way of getting around. It is part of a vibrant culture and a preferred way of traveling for many travelers. In August a hitchhikers gathering in Paris drew together over 150 hitchhikers at the Eiffel Tower, an event that was partly coordinated through Hitchwiki.
