Hitchhiking is an a pretty much unknown concept in Indonesia, and it might be hard in some partsto get a free ride at times. Despite all that, hitchhiking on islands of Java, Sumatra, Bali and Borneo might go very smoothly: on Java, according to those few hitchhikers who went there, you hardly wait ten minutes before you get a ride. Traffic is very slow though, and if you want to cross the whole country and get a full picture of Indonesia, it is not convenient to take a mere 1 month visa.
Hitching in Java, Sumatra, Bali and Borneo Getting a free ferry ride is very easyalso possible at least through a practice of hiding behind the truck seat. In Java fact, trucks are allowed to take 2 (3?) people for free onto a ferry - so you hardly wait ten minutes might be either one of the guys going for your next truck. Traffic is very slow thoughfree, or one of the extra-passengers; in latter case you should rather hide behind the seat, if and once you want are on a ferry, relax - no one wants to cross see the country dont make the mistake to take a 1 month visaticket later on. Took me 3 complete days  Most used harbors on Java island are Jakarta's Tanjung Priok and nights from jakarta Surabaja's (goes to bali! Hitching on ferries is possibleBorneo, you may get a seat (you may be hidden though20h) in a truck. Surabaya is The passenger ticket for the place to go from ferry Java to Borneo-Bali is half a dollar a price, so you might as well skip hitchhiking there.
The ferries suck though. As much as i know: trucks are allowed to take 2 (or 3?) people free in the ferries. you may be one of them, or an additional one. in this case you ve to hide until you are in the ferrie, later on no one wants to see the ticket.
biggest harbours in java are jakarta (tanjung priok), surabaja (to borneo 20h, and more). the ferry java bali is half a dollar and one hour...hardly worth waiting for a ride.
hitching in bali is fine too.

Jalan Jaksa is the tourist road with the cheap hostels (about 3 USD. Pretty much in the center. Ask taxi drivers how to get there and take a bus. Worldhitch 18:08, 7 October 2007 (CEST)
