'''Slovakia''' is a member state of the [[European Union]] as well as the [[Schengen Agreement]]. Hitchhiking here seems not to be so easy. People rarely tend to stop, when you are standing at the road with a sign. So it is best to ask directly at gas stations. Some, but not many, speak English or German. Russian is more widely understood, but not necessarily liked.
Young people can speak English and it's not so bad with English in bigger towns. Of course in villages it can become difficult to understand each other. Hitchhiking in Slovak means is 'autostop'.
Two weeks ago I was in Slovakia. At the I was at a gas station I was asking peoplefor a lift. After 2 hours some cops were standing there, telling arrived and told me that hitchhiking in Slovakia is illegal (everywhere!) and driver drivers can get a 100 euro penalty fine (new lowlaw). After 4 hours the cops left the station and some a Czech person took me. He told me that this is true...
You can find a lot of [http://stopar.sk/ offers for hitchhikers] at [http://www.stopar.sk/index.php?newlang=english stopar.sk] (available in English).
