Abkhazia is a political entity on the eastern coast of the Black Sea and the south-western flank of the Caucasus whose status is disputed. It considers itself an independent state (the Republic of Abkhazia). This is recognised by Russia, Nicaragua, Venezuela, Nauru, South Ossetia and Transnistria.

It was a part of Georgia and most countries, including Georgia and also the UN still consider it as a part of Georgia. Entering Abkhazia is illegal according to Gerorgian laws. That's why travelling from Russia via Abkhazia to Georgia is considered entering Georgia illegally.
