Walk out of the city centre along the street ''Szoboszlói út'' until the intersection with ''István utca'' (about 2.6 km from the central square). Hitch after the intersection, at the exit of the Penny Market parking lot, in front of the sign marking the Debrecen city limits. You can hitch at the entrance to the Motorway, but stopping is better at the named location. Bear in mind that the 2nd Motorway entrance has better stopping possibilites but much less traffic.
Note that on weekends there is little long-distance traffic here, only people going to nearby villages (where you could easily get stuck). If you are hitchhiking on a Saturday or Sunday, it will be much faster and safer to hitchhike south from Debrecen to Berettyoujfalu and then turn west towards Budapest.
