Instructions below are for the old road and there is now only local traffic there. This is far better: Where Aleja Solidarnosci intersects with Aleja Generala Wladyslawa Sikorskiego / Generala Boleslawa Ducha is a McD. Just after the intersection in direction of Warszaw (west) is plenty of space for cars to stop and they are going pretty slow. The road then turns into a highway within a kilometre.
BEWARE Since April 2016 the place described above is no longer available - construction of the highway has began there and there is absolutely no place nearby to catch a ride. Try skansen bus station, you will meet mainly locals there now but it's on the way to the highway. - chrapchrap
You can also walk for about 5 minutes in the direction of the highway and you'll find a lay-by. Cars go faster, but the visibility is good & there is plenty of space for cars to stop and it is obvious you are hitchhiking (as opposed to waiting for a bus).
