Take the free ferry to Butterworth. If you walk out of the port, you will see a bridge with ramps. You need to go south, which is right when you leave the port. After a few kilometres, there is a toll bridge, from where you can walk to a ramp of the main north-south highway.
From Panang Sentral bus stop we took bus number #706 going to Jalan Nagasari (5.361694, 100.410936) (2 MYR per person August 2019) then walked 2 km to gas station on E1 highway (5.353929, 100.419684). There is a fence, but fear not - there is also a gate. We did catch a ride within 25minutes to Ipoh.
Tip1: go through the restaurant area to the next gas station or rest area to catch all the traffic.
