Edit from September 2019: Some important remarks when trying to reach Dugopolje - be sure that you are waiting for the bus at the right station. Unfortunately I was waiting at the wrong one, and lost around one hour there. The right station is in Solinska street, across from Zagrebacka bank. There again I was waiting for n 35 for an hour, but it wasn't showing up, so finally I took bus to Koprivno (32 I believe) which follows almost the same route. Just before the place the driver dropped me off (10 min walk to toll station) I saw a gas station on the left side and I think this would be the best place to get out and just get up hill and start hitchiking there. I didn't follow my guts so I went to the toll station. I didn't like the place, the cars passing were mostly going shorter distances and it took me a while of burning in the sun until someone picked me up. So try with the gas station and let us know how it goes :)

If you don't want to hitchhike at the toll booths you could go to the main bus station in Split and find a long-distance bus that's going to head onto the highway (the A1) towards Zagreb. You can ask at the information/ticket booth which buses are heading onto the A1 and when they leave. Find your bus and tell the bus driver or conductor that you would like to hitchhike and ask if they will drop you off at the first gas station (called Rašćane Gornje, it's a good place to ask for rides) on the highway, about 10 or 11km after the toll booths. I tried this and they were unfriendly at first and said that's not a place the bus stops but we quickly managed to negotiate an unofficial price. Because it was peak season and we weren't getting an official ticket they said I had to wait until the bus filled up and then I could get a seat if there was one left over, or stand.
