Police
If you keep that in mind, you can easily see why going all soveregin citize an only remaining silent and asking if you are free to go is not the best advice. What I wolud advise you to do if a patrol stopping by you is to keep calm, be polite and provide them a form of official ID if they ask for it (altough they never went that far with me). Most of the time, they will ask you where are you headed, maybe a few other vague questions, remind you that hitchhiking is illegal on the highways (even if you are not on a highway at the moment), wish you a nice day and drive away.
