I'm an Israeli, I've hitchhiked here several times, and I've never heard of or seen a hitchhiker "point his thumb down". Where is this info from? I think I'll remove it. Volland 23:21, 18 July 2007 (CEST)

It says "pointing to the ground with the hand far from the body", which is probably similar to what worked for Amylin and me in Thailand, Laos and China. We also used to slowly wave. Sometimes a bit more frantically, if there hadn't been a single car passing in 2 hours time. Also, Russian hitchhikers are known to hitchhike like that all the time. Guaka 11:48, 19 July 2007 (CEST)
Ok, I stand corrected. However I've still never seen a hitchhiker in Israel do this gesture - only the usual raising of the thumb. Where is your info from? Volland 21:48, 20 July 2007 (CEST)
Oh, sorry, I didn't get it. A CouchSurfer just corrected me. Nevermind. :) Volland 00:59, 22 July 2007 (CEST)

Maps

Does anyone know of a good map to use when HH through Israel? I'm going at the end of January. --Tom 00:45, 4 December 2007 (CET)

Pointing your finger down is the sign that you're not going far, pointing your arm and finger straight out is the usual hitchhiking sign, sticking your thumb out (as done in the US) is signal associated with prostitution. The recomendation is to take lifts from families, couples, and single people in well maintained vehicles (if in a group).

Entering Israel with stamps from Syria and Lebanon

moved from User talk:Guaka

Hi ! I saw on your page that you hitchhiked from Amsterdam to Jerusalen throught Syria. I've heard that when you enter Syria of Libanon with a passport and then to enter Israel (with the same passport) is not allowed, becouse these countries don't like each other and so if you enter Syria you can never enter Israel with that passport (and the same goes also backwards). So how did you manage to enter Israel after entering Syria?

Thanks, Amines11:01, 17 September 2011 (CEST)

In most cases Israel will let you in regardless of the stamps you have. The border guards might question you for a couple of hours though, so it's not great. On the other hand, Syria and many other countries will not let you in if you have any evidence of having visited Israel. In the case of Syria that could even be an entry stamp to Jordan without a matching exit stamp. So once you're in Israel you'll probably have to fly out of the region from Israel, Egypt or Jordan. guaka 12:01, 17 September 2011 (CEST)
Thanks, I have 2 passports(one syrian and one slovakian) so for me it's not a problem but my friend wanted to go hitchhiking with me there and he has only one passport. Thank you Amines 12:31, 17 September 2011 (CEST)

Road 6

I recently hitchhiked from Haifa to Eilat via Road 6 and I would like to point out that it is more than possible for drivers to pull over at the shoulders of the road. We got on and off rides at least 5 times even in the most busy sections. Yes, it's a little scary because cars are going at 110 km/h and may honk at you for standing there but if it's a hot day and you're two nice girls you'll get picked up in no time :) BeckyZ 08:03, 16 August 2012
