Hey, I was looking around and found some different templates for cities. As usual, I "design" it with a "Heading Out" header and under it a "North/East/.. towards A, B, C...". Does it make sense to edit other pages like that to have a more common design? For some examples, look at Enschede or Dresden. Different design you'll find at the Wien or Salzburg sites. A totally different design you'll find at the Phoenix city-site. I guess for more usability (and to make it more user-friendly) a standard-template should be created for city pages with hitchhiking spots. platschi 15:51, 12 August 2007 (CEST)

I always headline them under "Hitching out" and then "North, towards City, City City" etc. I think that because of my borderline OCD tendencies, most pages fall under that template. However, I'm not partisan about any particular organization system as long as it works. We do need to start setting up some "official" templates, though. I keep telling myself that we need to get that taken care of so that we can keep our growth organized. Nothing too strict, though, because I'm a firm believer that more protocol means less innovation. Zactalk 15:15, 17 August 2007 (CEST)

Articles/information about hostels

I found an article dedicated to a hostel. I think we shouldn't have individual articles about hostels on this wiki. I moved the article into Milano, where it's better off. But, there's also a big CS community in Milano, and we should probably find some guidelines on what we want and don't want in articles. Guaka 16:49, 15 August 2007 (CEST)

hey, it depends how you see it. maybe there are hitchhikers out there that are not members of CS or any other community like that. i thought that a cheap place to stay in milano might be a good information if you're totally lost. but it has nothing to do with hitchhiking, so if you want you can also delete that. I agree that hostels have nothing to do with hitchhiking...hmm, difficult! About what to write in city/country articles, check out the last entry here above :) Maybe some kind of template can be useful. Infos about the city, hitching out, sleeping, (maybe) CS community there?, etc... platschi 17:16, 15 August 2007 (CEST)
True, and this hostel seems kinda right, but someone else might start adding hostels that aren't as cool as this one :) Guaka 17:27, 15 August 2007 (CEST)
A city template would be very useful of course. Maybe there's also a way to add buttons for (new) articles, just like Wikitravel. MrTweek? Guaka 17:30, 15 August 2007 (CEST)
Yeah, I think information about hostels are generally useful. Even if it's not such a cool hostel - as long as it isn't the worst in town ;) I mean, we also have information about eating or public transport - both not directly related to hitchhiking but still important. But I agree that we shouldn't put them on separate pages.
I think we already discussed that we need templates for new cities and countries, just noone did it. I don't know how to do this, but I guess it can't be difficult, so someone should find out (I'll try to, when I find time). --MrTweek 09:32, 16 August 2007 (CEST)
I like where that is going. I think that as a hitchhiker-dedicated site, we shouldn't just limit it to "hitching out" info only, but also to the essential things that a hitchhiker needs. We don't need to be a clone of Wikitravel, but sleep and food are pretty important to a hitchhiker. When I was vagabonding through Europe last year those three things were my routine. How to get to the next place, where to get free food when I get there, and what park, train station or monument to sleep on (I totally slept on the Colón in Barcelona). So That being said, I think as long as it's useful to a poor hitchhiker, it's relevant to the Hitchwiki.

Hitching In

For many cities it can be useful to have a "Hitching In" section. And maybe even "Hitching Around" for cities such as London and Budapest. It can be good to take a route over Paris, but you still don't want to end up at the Eiffel Tower. guaka 23:06, 14 October 2008 (CEST)

Hey, hitching in is used many times already, i just wondered why it is not added in the city template :) of course it's useful, always. nobody wants to walk from the suburbs of city to its center, so hitching in is quite important. so, just let's add it :) --Platschi 03:50, 15 October 2008 (CEST)

Places to Visit

I agree with Chris and Siberian explorer that removing Places to Visit from this template is a good idea. I've been thinking about this before. So I'm going to remove it now - we can put it back by popular demand ;) For some cities it might be okay to have this section, but I don't think we should encourage having Wikitravel-like sections. guaka 19:27, 13 November 2010 (CET)

Maybe we should also remove the sections titled Accommodation and Sleep and Other Useful Info? guaka 19:30, 13 November 2010 (CET)

Should we also delete ==places to avoid== from template? I think it's even more stupid than ==places to visit== Siberian explorer 20:08, 13 November 2010 (CET):
I would like to keep "Places to Avoid". As a hitchhiker, one can end up in some strange parts of cities that the usual tourist wouldn't visit, and if those places are dangerous, it's worth mentioning. This advice has been given in a couple of articles to useful effect. CRCulver 20:30, 13 November 2010 (CET)
Makes sense, but maybe it should be in HTML comments inside the template, somehow? What about Accommodation and Sleep? guaka 22:02, 13 November 2010 (CET)
"Accommodation and Sleep" has proven very useful for sharing good camping sites and listing nomad bases. I think mainstream hostels don't belong there though, as was discussed several weeks ago. I've got a mind to delete the hostel listings on some of the German city articles. CRCulver 22:04, 13 November 2010 (CET)
Ok, cool. I added some comments and found a nice way to do that (includeonly HTML comment makers). Please add more comments or instructions where you think it's useful. guaka 22:36, 13 November 2010 (CET)

Infobox location

Could it be a good idea to incorporate the Template:Infobox Location into this template? I always use it when creating a new article on a city. The only downside I see is users not filling in the information the infobox needs, which leaves an empty ugly box on the page. That's easy to repair though. Koendev 22:36, 25 February 2012 (CET)

Sure, feel free to do that! Maybe we can add something like a Template:Articles to be repaired (but find a better name) to it, so it's easy to find articles, where an inexperienced user didn't know what to do with all the code. --MrTweek 17:28, 27 February 2012 (CET)
Ok, I will look into it :) Koendev 01:05, 7 March 2012 (CET)
