Genève (Genf, Geneva) is a city in the west of Switzerland.

Hitching out
Direction Lausanne, Bern or Zürich
Go to rue de Lausanne, near la perle du lac. Take the tramway 1 and stop at Secheron. It's just here, there is a speed control radar in shape of cow, you can wait just after the traffic light. Cars can stop easily. It's a very good spot.

You can also ask people at the petrol station beside. Works really good!

Direction Chamonix, Torino or Milano
Take bus 27 towards Thônex-Vallard-Douane and go to the end of the line. Walk through the customs to France and stand at the end of the customs just before the cars speed up for the highway. The position is very good, the customs officers are nice, speed is low, there´s space for cars to stop, all the traffic is passing through.
FULLPAGENAMEE is a city in Switzerland. It is the main city of the french speaking canton Vaud.

Hitching Out
There are in Lausanne 4 highway entries coming from north/east, north, west, south/west.
I list here my favorite spots to go out of the city by the highway, there are others that I don't like, and also depending on the direction, you can use smaller streets.

North towards Bern, Neuchâtel
You can try to join the entry of the highway at the north of the city. Take the bus nr 1 in direction Blécherette and go to the end of the line till the station of the same name. From the center of the city it takes approximately 20mn.
There are 3 possibilities there. I strongly advice against possibilities 2 and 3:

# From the bus stop follow Route du châtelard in direction of the highway. After approx. 50 m there is a zebra crossing. You can stand just after it, the cars will slow down because of the crossing and there is space for the cars tu pull down. Don't stand too close from the crossing though since some cars will think you are waiting to cross and will stop for you. It is a little bit nerving as a driver!... Stand there with a sign because there are several different possible directions. I advice Yverdon, Bern or both. If your driver goes only to Yverdon ask to be dropped at the big (and only!) petrol station called Bavois at ca. 30km before the city. From there it is really to get a direct lift to Bern or even Zurich

# another possibility is to go further on Route du châtelard (100m) and stand short before both entries (in both directions) of the highway. The disadvantages would be: 1)if you are going direction north, it is difficult for cars to stop since they would be on the left track of the road especially on rush hour and more of that it is a fast traffic road so cars don't have time and space to pull down. 2) you would have to stand BEFORE both entry which go to two different directions. It may be confusing for drivers if you don't have a sign. If you have one, I think this place is too stressfull for drivers so that they have time to read it...

# walk 20m from point 2, so that you cross the bridge over the highway and thus take only cars in the good direction. You would stand at the entry of the highway, it is limit legal and I find the spot dangerous...

North/East towards Vevey
see spot 1) of #North towards Bern, Neuchâtel section. It is the same highway entry but to the other direction. stand with a sign Chexbres which is the next village before which there is a petrol station, or Vevey. If you go further Vevey the petrol station to be dropped at is the one mentionned before. It is not good to be dropped at Vevey itself if you want to stay on the highway since the city is at the edge of the see ca. 800m downhill.

West towards Geneva
# You can try the highway entry north of the city and stand with a sign Geneva.
# Stand at the south/west highway entry. To go there take the tram (TSOL) from the Flon station. Stop at the Bourdonette stop. You'll see directly a space where buses are waiting. Cars driving to Geneva pass beside the bus area, you can stand there with a sign because people could basically drive to all directions from there.
# you can stand at the entry 1-2 km before spot nr2. It is where the highway begins, there is a traffic-circle, cars drive quite fast and don't have much possibility to pull out. It is also not really safe to stand there. To go there take bus nr 1 or 2 direction 'Maladière' and stop at this station. You'll directly see the traffic-circle.

Do not forget that being a woman you are firstly a human being and you have the same rights than males.
You have a right to be respected and it is not true that while hitchhiking you expose yourself for a risk on your own wish.
--------------

For women, hitchhiking seems to be more risky. But it is not really. Many men are reporting the same degree of violation as women. If most reported cases of murder or rape of hitchhikers involve women hitchhiking alone, it is because men are less likely to report rapes (as a product of homophobia in the world), and murders are not getting the label of "hitch-hiking-murders" as often with male victims.

Hitchhiking as a woman can be easier though. Often, women stop for other women or girls. Even families (or other usual-not-hitch-hiker-friendly car owners) stop to "save" women from a situation in which they think she could be in "danger". As a product of sexism in the society many people think that women are more safe to take up as hitch hikers. And, possibly as a result of sexism in the society, women tend to be more safe to take up as hitch hikers.

Some precaution you can take as a women hitchhiker
Whatever statistics are concerning violence to women, there are some things you can do in order to avoid/go out from difficult situations

choose your driver
There are many different ways to get a ride from staying on the side of the road to asking directly to people at petrol stations. I personnaly like better to ask to people because you can then have a feeling of who is driving. It is of course difficult to know what kind of people could a person be just from the look but the first contact when asking them may let you avoid guys who already have matcho or strange behaviour towards you.
If you want or have to stay on the edge of the road, your attitude will of course attract differently and different people. The 'positive attitude' thing is important but be aware of what you may suggest when standing and smiling. Body language is really important.
I have a friend who almost got raped when hitch hiking in Europe for the first time. I hitched with her a few month later and understood then how things may have happened as I saw her standing on a half highway road without sign indicating her direction thought there would be an interchange short further with 4 different directions, with a hughe smile, a slightly denuded t-shirt and a suggestive attitude. I am not saying we should all wear burka when hitch-hiking, some people also use their charm and flirt a little bit with people without any problems. It is just a matter of being aware of what and how we do it.

Also the car of the people sometimes tell also about their owner. I am personnally more careful when asking for example fatly tuned car with big sound installation and loud music played since this can show that the driver gives a lot of importance (and money) into appearance, and likes probably to be seen, to impress and it is not rare that their car is also a tool to flirt and impress girls. This is just an example and there is of course no generality. I have often met really nice people, which at first glance I wouldn't think of as sympathetic. Just follow your feeling and don't hesitate to refuse a ride if you don't feel like it!

listen to your yourself / set up some safety rules
Set up some rules for yourself before begining to hitch hike. I personnaly have this one that if I happen to think/feel something is strange with somebody, I refuse the ride or ask to be dropped as soon as possible, even in the middle of nowhere. This is also valid for your security whith some drivers driving like crazy or really fast because they usually do so or because they want to show you how fast is their Audy TT. It may be better to spend an extra night in the middle of nowhere (which can actually be really nice) than begin raped or smashed in a car accident.

protect yourself
Finally take something with you to defend yourself in case of trouble. A knive can often be enough to dissuade your agressor. There are also pepper sprays you can find in some specialized shops, thought difficult to use in closed spaces. Take care, in some country it is illegal to use it against people or to use it at all... Having a mobile phone and knowing the important number (police, friends, ...) may be useful. You can also set up your own safety rules as for example always take your bag at your feet if it is not too big, in case you have to leave fast, etc...
