La Paz is the capital city of the Mexican state of Baja California Sur and an important regional commercial center.
Actually it's a pretty cozy town with not a lot of things to see and do, but seems like a good place to have some rest and hitch-hike a boat to the mainland.

Hitchhiking a boat
There are several marinas in La Paz where you can look for rides, and the main ones are Marina de La Paz, Marina Cortez and Marina Costa Baja.
The best time to look for rides is from mid-November to March. These months there are plenty of vessels going to Mazatlan, Topolobampo and Puerto Vallarta.

Here's the algorithm of a proper boat hitchhiking in the town of La Paz:
* Head to Marina de La Paz and look for "Club Cruzeros de La Paz" in the very end of the marina. There you will find a bulletin board where it's highly recommendable to leave a good-looking announcement with some basic information on who you are and what you are doing.
* There's a radio where you can listen to daily morning news at 8am and leave an announcement as well. Use it properly and everyone who listens to this radio (and you may be sure that they are many) in a few seconds will know that you're looking for a ride.
* Stick to this place and talk to people, look for contacts, drink coffee in early mornings with captains. Be nice to people.

Experiences
:In September 2016 El Chulito and Shamcore manage to get a ride from La Paz (Baja California Sur) to Puerto Vallarta on a luxurious private yacht. It took them about a week of waiting for a boat because it was a hurricane season in the Sea of Cortez at that period, which means that almost no boats traveled to the mainland until November. Using the manual written above the travelers got a ride and and it took them 48 hours to cross the sea. This experience shows that getting a ride with a boat is possible even during the poorest period of the year."
El Chulitohttps://hitchwiki.org/en/index.php?title=File:IMG_0498.jpg&diff=85112File:IMG 0498.jpg2016-12-21T23:00:43Z
El Chulito:

Baja California Sur is a Mexican federal state, located in the northwest of the country on the Baja California peninsula. It borders the state of Baja California to the north. Baja California Sur is the least densely populated of all Mexican states. Its capital and most important city is La Paz, which has a (quite expensive) ferry connecting the state with the ports in Mazatlán and Los Mochis in Sinaloa. Cabo San Lucas at the southern tip is popular with foreign tourists.

Hitchhiking
Hitchhiking in Baja California Sur is definitely possible. However, you should be aware that it lies in a desert climate zone and protect yourself accordingly. The low population density means that comparatively few cars pass by and hitchhiking is best done on the main highway connecting all major settlements in the state. Hitchhiking on the other roads is also possible, but usually with long waiting times.

Baja California Sur lies on a popular drug smuggling route to the US, which means there are many military checkpoints on the main highway. They are often very helpful to hitchhikers and will talk to drivers to take you with them.

If you plan on heading to mainland Mexico from the Baja, you can take a ferry in La Paz (Pichilingue) towards Mazatlán or Topolobampo. From La Paz to Topolobampo costs $970 MXN (approx. $53 USD) and to Mazatlan costs $1102 MXN (approx. $60 USD) (June 2016). See the BajaFerries website for the latest prices. It is also possible to hitchhike a private yacht: Chael777 managed to hitchhike a sailboat from La Paz to Mazatlán.

August 2016 experience:
El Chulito and Shamcore hitch-hiked several places in Baja California, spending a bit more than a month staying on the beaches and local people’s homes. Thumbing experience is more than positive. Don’t miss this part of Mexico, it’s people and nature will drive you crazy. Hitch-hiking through this state is highly recomendable.

Camping on the beach
It is a common practice to camp on beaches in Baja California Sur. Mexican themselves consider it safe however it might be interesting to check with the local population before doing so (it is dangerous on the other side of the gulf for example). Some of them might be privatized by hotels and resorts but it is quite easy to find another spot a bit further. The tide has little effect on the Californian Gulf coast so camping is also doable on small beaches like in La Paz.

The Lovers’ Beach is a hidden cove near Cabo San Lucas, at the southernmost tip of the Baja California peninsula. You can access it by water taxi. A regular price would be between 100 and 150 pesos.
Hitchhiking out
Towards Antigua or the Highlands (Panajachel, Quezaltengo (Xela), El Quiche)
From the city's transport hub Trebol on the Panamericana you can start hitching on one of the service stations or getting farther away from the center by bus or walking. It's not dangerous as there is a lot of traffic and people.

I you are leaving the city via bus the safest bus stop to start your journey out of the city is past Trebol across from the modern shopping mall Tikal Futura. Here you can catch a bus to Antingua, Quezaltenengo (labeled 'Xela' on the buses) or for Panahachel (Pana). At this stop there will be a guy with a clipboard who can help you take a bus that's going your direction.

Another option is to take a bus to San Lucas (it's the same direction as Antigua) and get off in the stop "entrada a Santiago" (you will know where it is as the helper will scream that when you approaching), walk in the direction of the road. There's a petrol station next to a supermaket where you could ask people. Or keep walking in the direction of the road past the bridge, you can start thumbing past the on ramp.

Towards Salvador
You are in the urban are all the way to the point where the road begins to wind up the mountains. This is a rich and safe neighbourhood. User Worldhitch was waiting quite a lot there and got a ride in a curve on the way up. Going farther up by bus may increase your chances.
Belize is a small country in Central America. It borders to Mexico in the north and Guatemala in the west.

Hitchhiking in Belize is very logical and appears to be very good, even locals do it. There are plenty of speedbumps, so each time you walk out of a town it's better to thumb at one of these.
Some hitchhikers say that a small token payment may be exchanged.
Public transport is inexpensive but quite slow considering the size of the country.

People in Belize are very friendly and many of them are proud of their country. Try to show respect to Belize and it's citizens and you'll find out that this tiny country has a lot of things to offer.
Jalacte Border Crossing (Illegal by this moment)
December 2016 experience:
El Chulito and Shamcore tried to legally cross the border with Guatemala via Jalacte in December 2016.
They hitchhiked from Punta Gorda to Jalacte without any real difficulties. The traffic is poor, but they got rides from one village to a next one and reached the destination point in about 3 hours, which is not a bad timing.
The road was completely paved and in great condition. Seems like the works are almost finished.
About 5kms before Jalacte there's customs where the guards first ask where you go. El Chulito and Shamcore asked about a legal way to exit Belize and enter Guatemala and got bad news. The only way to leave the country legally is to find the only police officer in Jalacte who owns an exit stamp. Actually he's only authorized to put exit stamps only in guatemalan passports, but it seems like he can be convinced to help travelers as well.
Now it's impossible to enter Guatemala legally, because there's no kind of customs or control when entering the country. This means that it's impossible to get an entry stamp and stay in the country on a legal basis.
People say that Guatemala doesn't really participate in making a legal border crossing point because of a territorial conflict between two countries. Let's hope that in 2017 travelers will be able to cross the border legally. At the moment you can only enter Guatemala at your own risk, which is never advisable by HitchWiki community.

Our experience was hitchhiking into Hopkins after catching the bus to the intersection with the Southern Highway. The distance into the sleepy little town is too far to walk and the local bus into the town is quite infrequent. It is likely that you will come across locals at the shack on the corner who are waiting for the bus. They noted that it was commonplace to try to hitch a ride while waiting for the bus, whichever comes first.
El Chulitohttps://hitchwiki.org/en/index.php?title=Puerto_Vallarta&diff=84832Puerto Vallarta2016-11-08T21:05:44Z
El Chulito:

Puerto Vallarta is a bay-town in the state of Jalisco, one of the most important ports in Mexico.
City hitch-hiking works pretty fine here, so you might want to thumb instead of taking long-distance walks.

Going out towards Guadalajara
One of the best ways to get out of the city is to catch a bus to Ixtapa. The bus goes through the whole city from South to North, so it’s pretty easy to catch, just ask people for a blue bus to Ixtapa. As of September 2016 the ticket will cost you 7.5 pesos. When you’ll get to Ixtapa, just have a 15-minutes walk to get out of the town, find a speed bump and start thumbing.

Sleeping:
*1. If you want to spend a night close to Puerto Vallarta and hitch-hike in the morning, this might be a good option. Get to Ixtapa (like it was mentioned above), go to the main square of the town and find «Delegacion Municipal». On the left from the main door there’s another entrance to the building, and if you ask for a permission to put your tent right next to their office, they might be happy to help you. Basically it’s a small local police office. They have gas stove and water there, so you can cook and stay overnight in a safe place.

*2. In the centre of Puerto Vallarta there’s a church called «Iglesia de Guadalupe». They allow homeless people to stay at their patio for a night. If you really have no place to go, it might be an option, but make sure to keep an eye on your belongings. At 9:00 in the morning the church gives free food to everyone who needs it.
El Chulitohttps://hitchwiki.org/en/index.php?title=User:El_Chulito&diff=84828User:El Chulito2016-11-07T16:23:25Z
El Chulito:

If you got to Janos on your way to Agua Prieta, there’s a good place to find the next ride.

Get to the very west of the town (you can ask pick-up drivers to take you there) and you’ll see a military check-point which significantly slows down the traffic. Get past the check-point and you’ll notice a very good spot with a plenty of space for cars to stop.

Regular cars and trucks drive through separate gates in this check-point, which means you’ll have a great opportunity to talk to truck-drivers and get a long-distance ride. Lots of these trucks are going directly to Tijuana.

Also don’t hesitate to talk to the soldiers, they may help you to get a ride.
El Chulitohttps://hitchwiki.org/en/index.php?title=Chihuahua_(City)&diff=84433Chihuahua (City)2016-09-02T21:03:11Z
El Chulito:

If you’re going to Chihuahua from Nuevo Leon, there’s a nice paytoll with friendly staff between Saltillo and Torreon. This caseta cobro is located about 60km before Torreon and lies on the crossing of «Autopista de Peaje Torreon - Saltillo» and «Carretera San Pedro - La Cuchilla». Right after the paytoll there’s a plenty of space for trucks to stop. In early morning the drivers wake up, warm up the engines and depart in direction of Chihuahua, which brings you a nice chance to get direct rides for long distances. Talk to them and get lifts quickly.
This spot works well if you need to get to Torreon, Chihuahua or even all the way to Tijuana.

There is a PEMEX station and two OXXO shops as well. Camping is possible, but be aware of prostitutes and strange people who may wonder in the area during the night. If you need to stay overnight, it’s better to ask paytoll staff for permission to put your tent nearby to stay safe.
If you’re heading north in directions of Ciudad Juarez or Agua Prieta, there’s a nice opportunity of a sleeping place on your way.
About 100km north from Chihuahua city there’s a toll station where the road splits into two ways. The station is called Caseta Cobro Ojos Laguna.
It’s a very nice and safe place with some good options for camping. And there’s also a spare room which you can use to sleep!
El Chulito and Shamcore had nice experience in July 2016 asking local staff for permission to camp, but they were invited to stay in a room with beds and outlets. To get out of the city to the Periferico & the highway 180, take a San Pedro bus at calle 54 x 67 x 69 just outside San Benito mercado. The cost is 7 pesos (August 2016) & it'll drop right on the highway somewhere around the gas station. There's also a parallel 180D & according to Google maps it's faster for the coast cities but cannot comment on how busy it is, was taken by 180 myself & somehow I believe foreigners on the road to Chichen-Itza would look more logical.

Going towards Uxmal ruins
There’s a nice option (and also a life hack) how to successfully get from Merida to Uxmal ruins fast with an option of leaving your backpacks in a safe place.

From «Terminal de Autobuses Oriente» take a bus to Yaxcopoil which will take you there for around 20-25 pesos.
Once you’ll reach Yaxcopoil, walk towards the highway and hitch-hike to a town called Muna de Arana (you can get there by bus as well, but the ticket price will be a bit higher).

FULLPAGENAMEE is a city in Quintana Roo, Mexico.

Previously known for it's laid-back, tiny village character, Tulum nowadays is growing more and more into a popular tourist destination. Nevertheless, it's beaches are by far less crowded than in Cancún or Playa del Carmen, and the town and surrounding with its cenotes and the Sian Ka'an national park might be worth a visit.

Tulum can be divided into three parts: The town / pueblo along the highway 307, the ruins about 2 km north-east of town and the hotel zone about 3 km south-east of town.

Hitching within the city
Hitchhiking from the town to the hotel zone and vice versa is easy and much practiced. You will encounter locals and travellers alike hitchhiking this part of the road 109. From the town, you can walk to the crossing to Cobá and follow the bicycle path southwards. After about 200m, there's a big supermarket (Chedraui) to your left. A few meters further, at a smoke shop (or the Captain's bar a bit downstream), there's a popular spot for hitchhiking down to the beach. Here, you'll catch both traffic coming from the Cobá crossing as well as local traffic from the town. Ignore the taxis, you might get a ride easily within a few minutes. Along the hotel zone, any place is good to hitchhike back to town, but especially where you find 'topes' (speedbumps). Another good spot for hitchhiking back is the police post at the junction to the hotel zone and ruins/public beach.

Hitchhiking out
Northeast towards Cancún
Walk about 1.5kms east from the ADO bus station along Avenida Tulum (Highway 307) to the junction with Avenida Cobá (the road which goes to the beaches). Here you will find an (abandoned) tourist information kiosk and a small lay-by just after it. Hitch at the start of the lay-by. Approximately 600m further along the highway, you'll encounter a police post where traffic is obliged to slow down, and where it is possible to hitch from.
Make sure you'll be dropped off at the end of town at either side when on transit, otherwise it'll be quite some walk to avoid local traffic. Note that cargo trucks do not drive along the 307 through the city center, but use some small "ring road" around town, meeting/leaving the 307 at the Cobá intersection.

Northwest towards Cobá, Valladolid
Walk as above to the Cobá intersection. Turn left (northwest) along highway 109... it should be easy to walk up a few meters to find a hitchhiking spot (with shade) to continue your journey northwards. If you want to cut out all local traffic, continue walking 600m and hitch from the edge of town. However, there's no shade here, but hopefully you'll get a lift before you get baked alive.
If you’re looking for nice cenotes, better get to Valladolid first, as the cenotes are cheaper and more attractive there.

Southwest towards Chetumal, Belize
Walk about 800m west from the ADO bus station along Avenida Tulum (Highway 307). There is a police post here where traffic is obliged to slow down and from where it is possible to hitchhike.

Places to avoid
Accommodation and Sleep
For wild camping, enter the beach somewhat at the end of the hotel zone through one of the hotels (see below) and then just walk along the beach until you find some not-yet-developed area. Respect the wildlife, though. Some areas might be closed for public to protect nesting turtles, so do not ever disturb these!

If you want to stay overnight, go past the ruins and head to the northern part of the beach. You will immediately notice an old white lighthouse on the top of the hill. It’s easy to get there, just follow the path and sneak into a hole in the fence.
There are a few buildings surrounding the lighthouse. This place is totally abandoned, which makes it a very nice spot to sleep. It’s a bit dirty, but you can put your tent in one of the buildings and stay protected from rains, which often happen in this part of Mexico.
Be aware of wild animals and tourists, that sometimes get to this complex by curiosity. Enjoy cocos from palm trees and the view from the top of the lighthouse.

Other useful info
Along the hotel zone, it might seem that entry to the beach is only permitted when consuming at the various hotels or restaurants that block the entrance to the beach. There's a "free" entrance to the beach at Eufemia's (next to Camping Chavez), but in general, just simply walk through the hotel areas straight for the beach.

The bathrooms at the entrance of Tulum ruins are free to use, you know what to do.
El Chulitohttps://hitchwiki.org/en/index.php?title=Bahia_de_Los_Angeles&diff=84425Bahia de Los Angeles2016-09-02T20:56:06Z
El Chulito:

If you’re looking for a nice beach with exotic animals and warm water, then don’t miss Bahia de Los Angeles. Almost all the visitors of this town are fishermen from San Diego, so it’s quite possible to get a direct ride here from any place of the northern part of Baja California.

People in Bahia are very friendly. Mostly you’ll meet tourists, who came to this town to relax and go fishing. Don’t hesitate to smile and approach people, you might be invited for some meal and make friends.

City hitchhiking works really well here due to low traffic, so expect to be picked up almost immediately after thumbing. Be patient, sometimes you will have to wait a bit for cars to appear.

Getting out
There’s quite a low traffic going out of Bahia, and most of it are tourists who are going back home or continuing their trip across Baja. Normally you’ll get rides towards north.

It might be a wise idea to ask people for a ride a couple of days in advance. If you walk through / hitch-hike the town, you’ll definitely meet and talk to people. Ask when they’re leaving and get out of Bahia with them.

Hitch-hiking out of the town is definitely better in the morning. There might be someone going at least to Punta Prieta, from where you’ll find a car going your direction.

Buying food
Please note that Bahia is quite touristy, which is the reason why you won’t find really cheap food in the shops (everything costs at least 30% more than in the mainland of Mexico).

There are several shops in the town which are located in the centre. The cheapest shop around is Mercado Isla. Just ask around to get directions. Keep in mind that the vegetables there are quite expensive, so it’s better to buy them in Tecate Mini-market which you can find right next to the main roundabout.

Camping
There are many villas and hotels at the seaside, so you may try your luck and camp there. The water rises quite high during summer season, so it may be a nice idea to camp a bit away from the shore.
El Chulitohttps://hitchwiki.org/en/index.php?title=Punta_Prieta&diff=84424Punta Prieta2016-09-02T20:55:52Z
El Chulito:

Punta Prieta is a point on a crossroads between Bahia de Los Angeles and Guerrero Negro. If you’ve been offered a ride to get there, don’t hesitate. It’s a nice spot where you’ll catch all the traffic going to Baja California Sur. There’s a restaurant there and some other facilities, which means that it’s not the middle of nowhere. If you run out of water, ask people for some, or buy it in the restaurant.
El Chulitohttps://hitchwiki.org/en/index.php?title=El_Rosario&diff=84423El Rosario2016-09-02T20:55:42Z
El Chulito:

El Rosario is a small town, which has the last gas station on the route to Guerrero Negro. There’s only one more or less cheap shop in there.

Make sure to have enough water with you before leaving El Rosario, as there won’t be any opportunity to buy it before you reach Bahia de Los Angeles or Guerrero Negro. If you get stuck in the middle of nowhere, look for ranchos and ask for water there. You might be invited to stay overnight with them as well, easily.
El Chulitohttps://hitchwiki.org/en/index.php?title=Santo_Tomas&diff=84422Santo Tomas2016-09-02T20:55:19Z
El Chulito:

There’s nothing really to do in Santo Tomas, but if you want to get to La Bocana from there, note that the traffic is very poor on that road. It might be a nice idea to hitch-hike to La Bocana in the morning in order to find a ride with local workers, so if you got to the village late, ask locals for a possibility to stay overnight in their houses. Make sure to stay safe, as locals refer to La Bocana as a very dangerous point of a drug-trafficking route.
El Chulitohttps://hitchwiki.org/en/index.php?title=Santa_Maria&diff=84421Santa Maria2016-09-02T20:55:06Z
El Chulito:

There’s an enormous beach with a lot of opportunity to camp. The water is not the warmest one, but it’s a safe place.
On the beach you’ll find a huge hotel called Santa Maria Hotel. They have showers outside which are easy to find, but as for August 2016 the showers didn’t work, one could only use the bottom tap to clean the feet.
You can also ask for hot water in the hotel’s restaurant.

Sometimes pick-up trucks can be seen on the beach, which is a nice opportunity to get a ride back to the town.
El Chulitohttps://hitchwiki.org/en/index.php?title=San_Quintin&diff=84420San Quintin2016-09-02T20:54:37Z
El Chulito:

If you’re looking for a cool and safe place to camp in that area, go to the small peninsula on the east from La Bufadora (the one with La Marina restaurant). This piece of land is full of villas where foreign people live. You will easily catch a ride to the very end of the peninsula and find a perfect beach to camp on. Very calm and safe place.
Baja California is a Mexican federal state. It borders the state of Baja California Sur to the south, the state of Sonora to the east, the U.S. state of Arizona to the northeast, but without a possibility to cross the border, and the U.S. state of California to the north. Its capital is Mexicali.
The most frequented border crossing in the world is in Tijuana, Baja California. Another important city is Ensenada at the Pacific Coast.
The south of Baja California is hardly populated and a desert, be prepared for that. Anyway, the only road to hitchhike on most of the time is highway 1 which goes all the way down to Baja California Sur. In Baja California, there are many military checkpoints. If you make friends with them, they can be helpful in finding you a lift.

It may be extremely easy to hitch in mainland Mexico, but in the Baja California peninsula, it's a completely different story! Saying this, it is completely do-able! In Baja California, there is only one road, the HWY 1, which isn't hell to hitchhike on but requires a lot of patience: there are often large distances in between cities (which are barely even cities, rather a few ranches and cactus farms) and even larger distances between petrol stations (example: El Rosario is the last one before Guerrero Negro, about 360 km further down in Baja California Sur). Getting stuck in the middle of the desert is NOT fun, and many people can only take you from town to town as it is local traffic or gringos doing one of the many races down in the Baja. Also, unless you are planning on staying in Baja and going back up towards the USA-Mexico border, you should hitchhike from Mexicali south.

August 2016 experience:
El Chulito and Shamcore hitch-hiked through whole Baja California, staying on the beaches and local people’s homes. Thumbing experience is more than positive. Don’t miss this part of Mexico, it’s people and nature will drive you crazy. Hitch-hiking through this state is highly recommendable and, to tell the truth, not that hard as you may think.

To better understand what does hitch-hiking in this area look like, let’s divide the state in three parts:

- The route from Tijuana to El Rosario.
The first part is quite easy to hitch-hike, you won’t probably even notice the difference with thumbing in the mainland. There’s no problem if you want to wild camp and stay safe. Supermarkets like Bodega Aurera and Climax are widespread, you will find them in Ensenada, Monadero and San Quintin.

Towns and places of the first part:
* Ensenada
* La Bocana
* La Bufadora
* Mexicali
* Monadero
* San Quintin
* Santa Maria
* Santo Tomas
* Tijuana

- The route from El Rosario towards Guerrero Negro and Baja California Sur
The second part may be a bit more complicated due to low traffic. Expect some longer waiting times. Usually one of 15 cars picks you up, but note that sometimes you’ll have to wait for 10-15 minutes for a car to appear. Bring enough water with you.

Towns and places of the second part:
* Bahia de Los Angeles
* El Rosario
* Punta Prieta

- The route from Mexicali to Punta Prieta through San Felipe.
The third part is an alternative way to get from the north to Punta Prieta. This is mostly a dirt road, which has less traffic than the main road MEX1.
If you have any experience in hitch-hiking this road, share it here.

Towns and places of the third part:
* San Felipe
There's a tollbooth just outside of town. You can get near there, at least from Cholula, by taking a bus to San Martín (about an hour, 10 pesos). Ask the driver to let you off at the highway (autopista or cuota), and you'll get dropped off more or less right at the slip. From there, it should be pretty easy to get a ride to the tollbooth (caseta) where you can then get a ride into Mexico.

South-West towards Toluca, Cuernavaca
Get to the tollbooth at via Atixcayotl. Go pass the caseta and walk about 100m until you see a cool place to hitchhike. Near the spot there's a free WC room. The traffic is going slow, and there's plenty of distance for the drivers to see you and stop. Very good spot.
ATTENTION:
It might be difficult to get to Toluca if you're heading from Puebla or Cuernavaca because of low traffic and a lot of villages on your way.
Once El Chulito hitchhiked from Puebla in direction of Toluca, and after passing the village of Huitzilac to the MEX106 road he faced a very low traffic density there. This road is cool if you have a plenty of time and enjoy mountains, lakes and lagunas, but it might be difficult to find a place to hitch on some parts of the road because of very narrow paths.
East towards Mexico City
A good way to hitchhike to Mexico City will cost you around 11 pesos and something like 1 hour to get to a good spot.
Get to McDonald's at Paseo Tollocan. About 50m from McDonald's there's an OXXO shop with a bus stop next to it. From this bus stop take a camion to a town called Ocoyoacac. These camions are usually green, and the driver normally charges 11 pesos (as of July 2016).
As soon as you get to Ocoyoacac, go past the San Martín Obispo cathedral and head North to the highway. Your first goal is to get to PEMEX gas station next to the "Rectoria Universidad Mexiquense del Bicentenary". It's gonna be a steep 1.7km climb, so if you're carrying a heavy backpack don't hesitate to ask pickups to take you further to the highway.
Once you've reached PEMEX, you'll notice that there's a nice traffic going to the mexican capital, but the sad part is that the cars normally drive quite fast. Go to the highway and continue walking for like 10 minutes in the direction of traffic, and when you'll reach a curve just stay there and start hitching. The waiting time can be more that 30 minutes because of fast traffic, but you just wait and do what you always do.
