'''Gerben''' is a Dutch student, formerly in [[Delft]] doing civil engineering, but has now almost finished his degree in liberal arts and sciences in [[Utrecht]] (mainly social geography and international relations), where he has lived for the past three years. He first started hitchhiking on Queensday 2006, and got picked up by a Brazilian air acrobat who told him she always picked up hitchhikers when she saw them. Going only from [[Delft]] to [[Amsterdam]] that day, he decided that it must be possible to go further as well. So far, he has hitchhiked criss-cross through Europe in all directions, and has made several bigger trips: in 2008 he hitchhiked from [[Netherlands|NL]] to [[Russia]] and back, while in 2009 he hitchhiked from [[Netherlands|NL]] to [[China]], passing [[Turkey]], the Caucasus and [[Central Asia]] en route. In the summer of 2010 he hitchhiked from [[Egypt]] to [[Kenya]], passing [[Sudan]] and [[Ethiopia]] on the way.
[[Category:Hitchhikers in the Netherlands]]
Gerbennaphttps://hitchwiki.org/en/index.php?title=New_York_City&diff=49431New York City2011-02-12T13:47:37Z
Gerbennap:

'''New York City''' is the largest city in [[New York State]]. Generally, when travelers say they are from or going toward "New York", they are referring to this city, which is actually made up of 5 boroughs and 3 islands: Manhattan, Staten Island, and Long Island (which Brooklyn and Queens are a part of). The Bronx, the fifth borough, is connected with the mainland of [[New York State]].

== [[Train hopping]] ==
New York City is a major hub for trains: freight trains, Amtrak, Metro-North, MTA, LIRR, NJ Transit, and PATH trains all pass in and out of this city. Although riding trains for free (train-hopping) is illegal, it is one of the most viable ways to get out of the city for free. In most passenger trains (NJ Transit, Amtrak, etc.), the only way to ride for free is to hide in a bathroom or display a "Seat Check" ticket found on the ground or from a previous ride. Generally speaking, if you are discovered to be riding without paying the proper fare, you will be asked to pay it. If you can not pay it, then you will be asked to exit the train at the next station. As long as you remain friendly and cooperative, there should not be a problem with legal issues, arrest, or fines.

Hopping freight trains is a common way to ride long distances for free. It is extremely practical to do if you have phone or internet access, because there are numbers and/or websites that will give you the direction that each freight is headed and its estimated time of arrival, based on that freight's identification number.

== Heading North ==
Advice: Don't get stuck in [[Albany]].

[[user:gerbennap|Gerben]] took the subway out on line 2 to the last stop, and then walked to the commuter train at Mt.Vernon East, direction Stamford, and got off at Rye. There you can start hitching on the onramp of the I287. [[user:gerbennap|Gerben]] used a sign saying 'Up North' and got picked up after 20 minutes and taken all the way to [[Albany]].

== Heading West/South-West (Interstate I78)==
The Interstate I78 is a road that more or less comes from NYC and passes New Jersey and leads into direction Harrisburg.
Since New Jersey might be a little bit tricky and hitchhiking is kind of outlawed there, it can be best to take a bus ride.
For 20.5 dollars you can get to [[Allentown]] in [[Pennsylvania]], hence bypassing New Jersey.
The bus leaves New York at the Port Authority bus terminal. In Allentown you can walk or hitchhike (within the city) to the entrance of the I78.

=== On I-95, toward [[New Haven]], [[Providence]], and [[Boston]] ===
I-95 North runs along the Eastern coast of [[New York State]] and [[Connecticut]] at this point. Leaving New York City can be very complicated, especially getting past the Bronx, a borough full of decidedly "dangerous" low-income neighborhoods. When [[amylin]] was researching on ways out, she found this quote on a website: "A hitchhiker killed in the Bronx will be referred to, by police, as a suicide victim."

So, [[amylin]] recommends taking the #2 subway train out to the last stop, Wakefield- 241st St. and walking about a mile from there to the [http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=1145104329767828159,40.903428,-73.850375%3B17266531610081419525,40.912360,-73.832180&time=&date=&ttype=&saddr=241st+St+-+Wakefield+Station+%4040.903428,-73.850375&daddr=40.912118,-73.832245&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=1&sz=15&sll=40.909977,-73.837309&sspn=0.014724,0.033431&ie=UTF8&z=15&om=1 Mount Vernon East Metro-North station], where you can take a local train a bit farther afield. To hitchhike to Providence, [[Rhode Island]] on a cold winter's day, she took the $4.75 train to [http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=325+Heights+Rd,+Darien,+CT+06820&sll=41.224118,-72.559204&sspn=1.875734,4.279175&ie=UTF8&ll=41.069322,-73.492999&spn=0.007344,0.016716&z=16&om=1 Noroton Heights] in Darien, CT, usually with changing trains in Stamford, and officially started from there. She recommends this route for hitchhiking North, especially if you don't want to spend a lot of money getting out of the city or time waiting outside. In Noroton Heights [http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&q=325+Heights+Rd,+Darien,+CT+06820&sll=41.224118,-72.559204&sspn=1.875734,4.279175&ie=UTF8&ll=41.069322,-73.492999&spn=0.007344,0.016716&z=16&om=1 there is an on-ramp about 1km from the train station]. There is a steady flow of cars who mostly have to stop before entering the on-ramp, and the area is suitable for low-key camping out. A local police patrol car passed her while she stood with her thumb out but did not harass her. (Whereas, if you take the Metro-North train from Grand Central Station in Midtown Manhattan, you'll pay almost double for the ticket, plus the $2,25 subway fare to get to the station. So, if you're already on the subway, you might as well get the most of your $2,25 and take it as far out as possible.)

=== Heading West ===
If you are trying to get to [[Pennsylvania]] or points West, your best bet is to take NJ Transit to [[Mt. Olive]], [[New Jersey]]. This will get you out of the suburbs, and thus increase the likelihood of getting a long-distance ride. From the Mt. Olive train station, you can walk to the [[on-ramp]] of I-80. Be advised that hitchhiking is illegal just about everywhere in New Jersey, including shoulders and on-ramps, so use caution.

==JFK airport==
You don't ''have'' to take the 5 US$ Airtrain to get there or to get from JFK to the city. Take a [http://www.jfk-airport.net/bus.html local bus] from terminal 4, you can pay 2,25 US$ for the ride or if you get an unlimited card (7 days are worth it if you're staying 4 or more days) you can use that.

Thanks for the Welcome! Its jolly good to be editing on here now that I'm back on my own turf :) after using it a lot. By the way, I guess you're aware that on the hitchwiki maps page, typing in any city to the search bar is always taking me to Paris?! This has happened to me in europe and in Australia, I guess its a common problem? Its a lovely city... to be sure.. but other places are nice too :) I noticed your name on the maps tutorial page, have you any advice on this? :) [[User:Dear sarah|Dear Sarah]] 02:10, 24 September 2010 (CEST)
I noticed you were trying to work out the problem with pages that begin with accented characters. Would you like me to help out? I'm pretty crafty with 'nix, php, etc. and I got my Wiki working perfectly with the "pretty links." Any kind of character works. [[User:Zac Stewart|Zac]][[User talk:Zac Stewart|talk]] 15:33, 19 June 2007 (CEST)
: Yes, maybe I get back to you with that. Foreign characters at the beginning of an article name work for you? My apache's utf8-support seems to be broken since I upgraded from debian sarge to etch. I didn't find time (and motivation) to fix this yet. --[[User:MrTweek|MrTweek]] 15:55, 19 June 2007 (CEST)
: Hey, I just fixed it :) Was not an apache-problem but a broken rewrite rule. Changed it from ^([A-Z]*)$ to ^(.+)$ now it works perfectly for me. Thanks for kicking me to get this running ;) --[[User:MrTweek|MrTweek]] 16:25, 19 June 2007 (CEST)
My mod_rewrite is set up like this:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule ^wiki/(.*) w/index.php?title=$1 [PT,L,QSA]
RewriteRule ^wiki/*$ wiki/ [L,QSA]
RewriteRule ^/*$ wiki/ [L,QSA] #remove this if you want more content than the wiki in the root
It's supposedly better to edit pages from index.php?title=.... instead of just the "pretty links" because you can block index.php from being indexed in search engines with robots.txt and then you have cleaner search results. == Hitching trips on Google Maps ==

Hi Philipp. I'm also trying to get my hitching tracks into Google Maps. However, after having drawn about 50 lines, the site has become really slow and I'm not able to add more lines fluently. Should you have any suggestions for this, then I'd be most interested. Here is one more map of a hitchhiker who put his trips into GM: http://maps.google.nl/maps?f=q&hl=nl&q=http%3A%2F%2Fjochem.lesparre-dewaal.nl%2Fliftroutes.kml&ie=UTF8&t=k&om=0&ll=51.727028,6.240234&spn=12.809217,29.619141&z=5. He did it in another way, supposedly with an external (KML?) editor or a GIS application. [[User:Fverhart|Fverhart]] 2 July 2007
: Yes, I have the same problems. It is ''very'' slow in Opera, but in Firefox it's ok. This depends a lot on your Computer speed. With my Pentium-M 1,6G Hz, it is just usable (in Firefox). In my company office with 2x2,8 GHz P4 it works very great. However, the more lines you draw, the slower it gets. I don't know about any external kml-editor. In google-earth you can at least read the files, but I think there is no possibility to edit them (but I'm not sure about that). Did you ask Jochem how he did this? I was wondering that too, because his maps look a little weird when you zoom very close. --[[User:MrTweek|MrTweek]] 12:22, 2 July 2007 (CEST)
:: Well, in FireFox on my PIII 350 mhz, 256+64 mb RAM it is simply slow :). With a somewhat faster machine @ work it is not workable, with only IE at hand. And I've drawn about 5% of the lines now. I don't know exactly how Jochem did it. It would be much better to find a solution for another problem. I'm keeping track of the petition at maastricht.hitchbase.org. However, the site is being spammed and now I get lots of mails of fake signature entries for the petition. I haven't got time to filter everything out, but the new entrees must be confirmed by clicking a link in the e-mail. This has been set up in PHP by a contact of Markus (mabe in Abgefahren). --[[User:Fverhart|Fverhart]] 12:22, 2 July 2007 (CEST)
::: Ok, in this case, your machine is obviously the reason ;) In general, Firefox seems to be the fastet in interpreting JavaScript.
::: Regarding your other problem: a nice, simple solution to avoid spam in forms is to add a textfield to the form, give it a name which spambots will like (i.e. email, name, url) and make it invisible (preferably with css). The user won't see it and won't fill it. The spambot doesn't know that it's invisible (they are not that good usually) and will probably fill some data into that field. Now you can delete all entries, where this field is filled. This worked really well for me in a few different cases. --[[User:MrTweek|MrTweek]] 20:16, 2 July 2007 (CEST)
hey,
i just added a map of lifterhalte into the hitchwiki information for [[Varna]] in Bulgaria. Unfortunately I wanted to have a map of [[Varna]] showing the hybrid maps view, but it only appears as a normal map. Nevertheless the html code shows "View=2", what obviously stands for hybrid, right? Is there any way to show this kind of map? hi, was denkst du, ist es moeglich blogs wie e.g. http://pipes.yahoo.com/aleeex/deutschetramper (und auch die internationalen) auf der karte von liftershalte als sprechblasen einzubinden? waere cool... dann poppen die auf liftershalte und wiki auf und damit verbreiteten sich relevante infos und geschichten... --[[User:Alex|Alex]] 19:27, 10 March 2008 (CET)
== Category:Germany ==

Moin, why categorizing back all the city articles to Cat:Germany? It was just the idea to sort them all to their states/provinces, like it happens with the German wiki: [[:de:Kategorie:Deutschland]]. There, you go to the different states, and find the cities in there. Ok, it might be confusing for people who don't know in which states cities are located, but for that a) we have the city-template in the [[Germany]] article. Smaller cities/villages (like e.g. Hörstel) should stay in their state category, if you list them also in the germany category, it will be overcrowded once we have all 2000+ German cities in there ;) Hm, just my opinion, but I like the sorting from the german wiki much more, looks more sorted/cleaned up. Maybe I'm wrong, what do you think ;) ? --[[User:Platschi|Platschi]] 20:05, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
: Categorizing back? Sorry, I didn't notice that :/ I just thought, we forgot that category all the time. No that I look at the German version, this looks quite good indeed. --[[User:MrTweek|MrTweek]] 20:59, 6 November 2008 (UTC)
== Over-enthusiastic new user + maps + various ==

Hi,

Can you please, please, please do something about Sigurdas? His changes may be well intentioned, but to me it is vandalism! My user page is '''my''' user page (and from what I've seen, I'm not the only one who thinks about things this way) and he has no right to put his completely undiscussed changes on it! If making me a sysop allows me to protect my page, then please make me a sysop, I'm currently unemployed and have been doing quite a bit of editing already, so you can see what I've done.

: I am sorry about that, Prino. [[Category_talk:Hitchhikers|There was]] a quick discussion about this category ('''Hitchhikers from...''') and back then nobody was against of creating and applying this category so I took it for granted to change users pages accordingly. In future I will try to avoid this kind of actions. Peace, --[[User:Sigurdas|Sigurdas]] 19:29, 9 November 2008 (UTC)

Q2, maps: I painstakingly put a Google map for [[Oostende]] on the page for my current place of residence, it's now a openstreetmap.org map, which is almost without detail...

Q3) Can you add the wikipedia character insertion box, so that it becomes a bit easier to add foreign characters, markup, symbols etc? And the longer edit tools toolbar (sub/super scripts, tables, etc)

Regards,

Robert - robert(a)prino(d)org

: Hmm, I understand that. However, the categories where always the only part of the userpages, that are "allowed" to be edited by others. This is due to the fact, that we want some consistency there. As sigurdas already said, we discussed that before and everyone agreed. Then again, I see that this discussion was probably too short, to let everyone notice it. I'm sorry about that. Oh, and looks like someone made you a sysop, very good :)
: Q2: I changed that now. It's the parameter 'view'. 0=gmaps, 1=sattelite, 2=hybrid, 3=osm.
: Q3: Yes, I'll put that on my to-do-list.
== New article about statistics - limits? ==

As one of the people with plenty of experience with statistics, I'm currently writing an article about the development of my statistics programs, from their very humble 5-tables per trip output to the somewhat over-the-top stuff they spew out now. Can you give me some guidance about article limits (i.e. no of lines) as it's likely to be pretty big, unless I create sub-pages linked to from the main page.

Also, any suggestions as to where to put it? The main [http://hitchwiki.org/en/Statistics statistics] page seems to be just an idea-gathering place... [[User:Prino|Prino]] 10:56, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
: Hey, that sounds really cool :) There are no limits here, in theory you could write a book on one page. Just make sure its well-formatted and use senseful headlines, so it will be easy readable. I wouldn't use subpages, unless you have certain parts, that are useful on their own, without the context. I would suggest making a sub-page of the statistics site, separated by a /, i.e. [[Statistics/Prino Statistics Tool]], but it can also be a completely independent page as well. --[[User:MrTweek|MrTweek]] 12:16, 14 November 2008 (UTC)
== please add my blog ==
Hi!

Check out my Blog at: http://hitchhikers.blog.com . Someone left me a comment saying you could maybe put a link to it on the wiki.

I'm a hitchhiker and spiritual seeker, travelling currently in India, soon to head for Nepal and, if the Lord be willing, Tibet. So far I've hitchhiked on this trip from Finland to Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Czech rep., Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey and Iran. I flew from Teheran to Delhi and went on hitchhiking, the destinations in India you can see from my blog.

This is my third trip hitchhiking in India and the second time I come from Finland (mostly) hitchhiking. The first time I covered all the distance overland, Finland-Sweden-(by boat to)Poland-Czech rep-Slovakia-Hungary-Romania-Bulgaria-Turkey-Iran-Pakistan-India. I 'cheated' on four occasions: boat from Sweden to Poland, bus in Turkey (from Sivas to Erzurum), train in Iran (a driver insisted on buying a train ticket for me from Esfahan to Bander Abbas) and a bus in Pakistan (from border to Quetta).

I did my first trip to India in 2005. The second time was 2007, when I hitchhiked from Finland-Estonia-Latvia-Lithuania-Poland-Slovakia-Hungary-Serbia-Greece-Turkey-Syria-Jordan-Israel-Egypt and then flew from Egypt to India. On that trip I 'cheated' in Greece, taking a train from Thessaloniki to Alexandropolis and between Syria(Damascos) and Jordan(Amman).

If you now got interested in hitching in more exotic places, I truly recommend Turkey and Iran. The hospitality of the people in Islamic culture is amazing - the first time I was in Iran I hitched here and there for 3 weeks and only one night I ended up sleeping in a guest house - otherwise the drivers (or others I met, walking around in smaller villages for example) would always invite me to their homes.
==Paluch's questions about hitchwiki maps==
From [[User talk:Guaka]]:
I have some questions about Hitchwiki maps. I was searching through, but i couldn't find any up date info. First of all is it possible to edit other users spots. There is many roads being built or rebuilt in Poland recently and there are more and more spots that need or will need some updates or even removal. Second is how can I set my home position other than Paris, maybe I'm blind;) but couldn't find it. Third, I see there are changes in the maps in city pages. No more thumb symbols with rating. Any reasons why? Any recent talk page about? Thanx for any help. Greets! [[User:Paluch|Paluch]]

==Paluch again about hitchwiki maps and some other stuff==
Hey thanks for your quick reply and improving the map. So far I've found one point to be removed as two users marked the same spot and write quite opposite description. But there's loads of points that need some updates and edits. I think we should avoid writing very subjective description, especially now after you created rating system. Maybe Hitchwiki Maps Help/FAQ section should be changed. There should be information what to write in the description. Probably most of us are not interested about some complaining of one user. I would like to find short info stating what kind of spot it is, like petrol station, slip road or lay-by and info about how to get there. Personal feelings about the spot should be stated only by rating. If I can edit points I will check all the points in Poland and abroad I know and clean them up a bit.
Another thing is that I don't really know how to change my home position. And when I click My Points nothing happens. Any bug? Why some points are shown e.g. in zoom 3 and others not. How does it work? What is New Collection about? And last thing: sometimes when I have time I look for hitching spots online, mostly on Google Maps and Google search. I think I've found good spots in southern Madrid, which are not written in Madrid page. But I didn't have chance to check them out in real life, so I don't want to add them to city page. Maybe we can make a new section called e.g. Spots To Be? so other users when have possibility can check them out. What do you think about this?
Greets. --[[User:Paluch|Paluch]] 01:47, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
Can you set up a Hitchwiki in the Dutch language? I've come across some more [[Dutch]] sites related to hitchhiking recently, and I finally think it'd be nice to also have a Hitchwiki in Dutch. I noticed you were trying to work out the problem with pages that begin with accented characters. Would you like me to help out? [[User:Zac Stewart|Zac]][[User talk:Zac Stewart|talk]] 15:33, 19 June 2007 (CEST)
: Yes, maybe I get back to you with that. Foreign characters at the beginning of an article name work for you? My apache's utf8-support seems to be broken since I upgraded from debian sarge to etch. I didn't find time (and motivation) to fix this yet. --[[User:MrTweek|MrTweek]] 15:55, 19 June 2007 (CEST)

== Category:Germany ==

== Hitchhikers categories ==
== Over-enthusiastic new user + maps + various ==

==Paluch's questions about hitchwiki maps==

I'd like to add this:
: Hmm, I am not sure if that's possible at all. The documentation is [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Images here], but I don't find exactly what you need. ::: Yes, that's what I suspected. We could probably activate this somewhere in the Mediawiki configuration. However, this would open many new possibilities for spammers, so I guess we should better leave it as it is, as long as we don't have a really good use for it. --[[User:MrTweek|MrTweek]] 21:28, 8 November 2010 (CET)
I've copied this one from Wikipedia, it should allow sorting hh:mm:ss times, but I cannot get it to work correctly, some text is not hidden. Can you have a look? Example is in [[User:Prino/sandbox]]

:Actually, I got it to work by removing the align="right", but that means it won't work in Wiki tables.
Hey MrTweek, this is [[User:Dargeron|Dargeron]], who improved the Baku section the other day. After your reply, I checked your profile and was surprised to read that your dream is to hitchhike from Europe to Australia. Well, but that's exactly what I'm doing right now! I am in China now, and I hope to be in NZ by summer, so if you need any sort of information at all, just contact me by hitchwiki or at my email!
I hope you set up your mind and go, it's a really amazing trip! :D
'''{{Moyale}}''' is a city in [[Ethiopia]], and, on the other side of the river, in [[Kenya]]. Reports from travelers mention that it is not a nice place to stay for longer than necessary for crossing the border. As mentioned, Moyale is divided between [[Kenya]] and [[Ethiopia]], and, on the Ethiopian side even between the Somali region and the Oromia region. Smugglers can often be seen traveling with many donkeys through the back streets.
On the Ethiopian side, there are plenty of "hotels", but if you are recognizable as a foreigner you will be charged much more than the local price. You may ask the people that gave you a ride until here to negotiate a price for you first. Lower end would be around 30 Birr/night.
'''Kenya''' is a country in East [[Africa]]. It has a large variety of tribes living in different areas of the country, with the Kikuyu tribe being the biggest. The famous Maasai tribe lives near the border with [[Tanzania]].

== Trans-African Highway ==
This road, going from [[Cairo]], [[Egypt]], to [[Cape Town]], [[South Africa]], leads through Kenya as well. In the north of the country, it is little more than a dust track through the desert, and this used to be a dangerous part of the road to travel on, with several hold-ups reported. [[User:gerbennap|Gerben]] travelled here in the summer of 2010, and he was told the banditry had drastically decreased after negotiations on illegal weapons possession in the region had been conducted by local authorities.
'''Sudan''' is a country in [[Northern Africa]]. It is the largest country in [[Africa]]. It is bordered by [[Egypt]] to the north, the Red Sea to the northeast, [[Eritrea]] and [[Ethiopia]] to the east, [[Kenya]] and [[Uganda]] to the southeast, the [[Democratic Republic of the Congo]] and the [[Central African Republic]] to the southwest, [[Chad]] to the west and [[Libya]] to the northwest.

== Hitchhiking ==
It seems that in Sudan a symbolic payment is expected, except from the region around [[Khartoum]]. You need permissions for some regions if you want to travel (to) there.

== Border crossing ==
* The border to [[Chad]] is closed (July 13th, 2009).
* The border to [[Eritrea]] is closed (July 13th, 2009).
* The border to [[Libya]] is closed (June 29th, 2010).
* The border to [[Egypt]] is open, but only on one single checkpoint ([[Wadi Halfa border crossing]]) or by boat via the Assuan Lake.
* The border to [[Ethiopia]] is open at the checkpoint [[Al-Qadarif]]

== Danger ==
There are a lot of unsolved conlficts in Sudan, also there are landmines in almost every border region. Due to high crime rates and escalating conflicts hitchhiking in Sudan can be dangerous, especially in the Region of [[Dafur]].
Don't cross borders illegally because of landmines and the risk of being imprisoned for a long time.

Be careful when taking photos of official buildings you may be arrested as a spy.
[[File:Ethopia alex.jpg|thumb|240px|right|Waiting for the right lift, South of [[Addis Ababa]], Ethiopia.]]
'''Ethiopia''' is listed as one of the world poorest countries, and very few people have cars there. Nevertheless, hitchhiking there is possible and completely doable, although it might require some patience of yours. Ethiopians probably see a hitcher as having a robbery or banditry motive since hitchhiking is an unknown concept there, however, white guys might have a bonus. Taxis might stop for you if you use a wrong hitchhiking technique. In rural areas, ''faranji'' might do hitchhiking when public transport is absent although payment can be expected in a matter of contribution to the high cost of fuel'' (according to the Lonely Planet)''. Nevertheless, it is possible to catch some free rides but it may require patience. Just tell the driver clearly you won't pay when boarding a vehicle.

Ethiopia is a fairly safe country, however the ''faranji'' frenzy will definitely quickly become an annoyance as you travel throughout the country. Along some rural main roads, it has been commonly heard that white foreigner (cyclist or 4WD) were thrown rock at them as part of an attention seeking game.

[[File:Ethopia2 alex.jpg|thumb|240px|right|Having a free lift (in this case with people from an NGO).]]

The country's car license plate system is very specific: the colour states the status of the ownership (''Blue'' for Private Ownership/ ''Black'' for Government / ''Orange'' for Businesses or NGOs / ''Red'' for Taxis). The NGOs plate always starts with a number ''(generally 35, other numbers simply specify the origins of the local organisation)'' while ''' ''CD ''' (in White/Yellow/Black)'' represents embassies and diplomatic cars with the first number specifying the country of origin. The 2 letters of the region of registration also appears on the license plate, both in Latin alphabet and local Amharic; As example, ''AA'' stands for Addis Ababa.

== Experiences ==

In the summer of 2010, [[User:gerbennap|Gerben]] hitchhiked through [[Ethiopia]], from the [[Sudan|Sudanese]] border crossing near [[Gonder]] to the [[Kenya|Kenyan]] border at [[Moyale]]. His experience was very positive, and even though little children and also adults were very curious whenever he passed through a village, he experienced none of the rock throwing mentioned in other reports. Waiting time was generally short.

== Borders ==

According to the Lonely Planet, the border with [[Djibouti]] through [[Galafi]] is accessible only by hitching for its last length with the load of truckers doing the road between [[Djibouti City|Djibouti]] Harbour and [[Awash]] where a payment of about 150-200Birr (from [[Logiya]]) can be expected.

Note that hitching along that road could reveal extremely harsh and dangerous due to local banditry and more especially due to the harshness of this desertic environment (along the Awash-Djibouti Road).

There are borders with:
* [[Eritrea]]: Border crossing is currently closed since the 1998 war
* [[Djibouti]]: via [[Logiya]] and [[Galafi]]
'''or''' via [[Dire Dawa]] and [[Gelille]]
* [[Somalia]]/[[Somaliland]]: via [[Jijiga]] ''(to [[Somaliland]])''
* [[Kenya]]: via [[Moyale]]
* [[Sudan]]: via [[Metemat]], note that visa is required in advance which takes up to one month to obtain.

== Cities ==
* [[Addis Ababa]]
* [[Bahir Dar]]
* [[Dire Dawa]]
* [[Awassa]]
* [[Jijiga]]

== Caution ==

* Beware of Landmines at the border regions to Somalia, Sudan, Eritrea and Kenya!
* Some Regions are simply closed for Foreigner, either due to the risk of attack, local tension or banditry. These usually includes the Ethiopian Somali Region ''(Werder)'' and the border with [[Eritrea]]. Other region such as the southwestern border with Sudan and Kenya as well as the Afar region can be volatile, so enquire before you go.
* Refrain from giving to beggars or children, be it small changes, pencils or any goods whatsoever as these raises their dependency and expectation on tourist.

Currently, he is planning his first Atlantic crossing by boat after his graduation in December.

Currently, he is planning his first Atlantic crossing by boat after his graduation in December.
==re:how to ask for precision in an article==
thanks for answering! yep, i know that, but does it mean i have to check all the versions ? (there s no clear indication about this specific change). plus many of them are from visitors (just IP). Or should i ask somewhere/someone else? if so,the "discussion" page for budapest seems most appropriate (more precise than the forum), but doesnt seem very active.
P.S.: same as Rocky : should i talk on your page or mine? are you notified when i answer you on my talk page?
==That apostrophe==
To save making you look twice, here's another thought I've had:

I see some recent moves probably related to standardising your apostrophe placement in "Hitchhikers". I've not looked to see how it all ended up.

But there's still a problem, as of a few minutes ago. Your main article namespace - http://hitchhiking.wikicities.com/index.php?title=Special%3AAllpages&from=&namespace=0 - contains pages that start with "Hitchhikers' Guide to Hitchhiking:". If they were redirects to matching "project" namespace pages - http://hitchhiking.wikicities.com/index.php?title=Special%3AAllpages&from=&namespace=4 - that start with "Hitchhiker's Guide to Hitchhiking:", no problem. But they are not. That namespace is practically unused.

You do know, I suppose, that you can type "project:" and let the software sort out the long prefix?

:No I didn't. :)

So I suggest that you grab those "s-apostrophe" pages and Move them all to the corresponding "project:" page if that's what you meant for them (which you probably did, as they are "About" and "Why this wiki?", etc).
Hoj Guaka. Maybe you want to check what I am doing on this page [http://eng.anarchopedia.org/Anarchopedia:Hitchhiking_Wiki_datadump Anarchopedia:Hitchhiking Wiki datadump], basically the same as what was done with infoAnarchy wiki. I think it is useful to have redundancy, so that the content stays should one website go offline for any reason. I am not sure how many articles to move, I think I will just start with the ones I find most interesting. [[User:Rev 22|Rev 22]] 21:48, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

:Hmm, redundancy can be good, but it can also lead to double work. Can you contact me by mail? kas per DOT sou ren AROBASE gmail PUNTO com. There's always Google cache if one website is offline for a bit. [[User:Guaka|Guaka]] 23:42, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

::My initial idea was not to move all data, just the most interesting and relevant. Relevant data attracts users, and eventually contributors. Every article will link to articles on this project so the score search engine for it will increase. Google cache is not reliable as a backup, except for reasonably popular articles in popular websites, but even then recreating mediawiki code from cached data (html) is a suboptimal solution (except if formatted text is all you care about). ::As for ads, I know they are a bit annoying, but we use 100% of the ad revenue to pay for our servers and bandwith (and still lose money) so I hope you understand that we need to cover our costs. Given our topics are more fun and less "educational" than Wikipedia, Jimmy Wales decided that we would not easily get donations, so he made Wikia a commercial business. We could put the ads on the top of the page instead of the right hand side if you found that easier on your eyes :-). World had an that made us take them off temporarily, I expect they'll be back as soon as the engineers have time to quickly fix the code. Also, I couldn't tell from your comment if you wanted your wiki promoted in the spotlight. Thanks!
Can you please tell (maybe at a prominent place) about what is now what, what is related to what in which way?

This Wiki moved from ''hitchhikingguide.org'' to ''hitchhiking.wikia.com'' - and then? to ''hitchwiki.org''? Is this now the official, persistent version, hte version to edit? What happened to ''hitchhiking.wikia.org''? What is that ''world.wikia.org'' it now redirects to? (Seems like it serves exactly the same purpose like Wikitravel... Where does it come from?)

Why does it show me my old userpage here and complains when I try to log in here, that there is no user of that name? Do I have to recreate an account here?
Questions over questions that I've not been able to answer completely on my own...
: The wiki recently move from hitchhiking.wikia.org to hitchwiki.org. We transfered all the pages (including userpages) to here, but unfortunately, wikia doesn't let one export user-accounts, so you will have to register here again. wikia made the old url redirect to world.wikia.com, and we can do nothing about that. This seems to confuse a lot of people :(. Anyway, now we have our own domain and own databases, so the wiki will stay here forever :) --[[User:MrTweek|MrTweek]] 21:34, 12 December 2006 (CET)
== Mapping locations -- Google Maps? ==

Hi!

I'm sure you know that Google has recently opend up their API in Google Maps just a little, allowing you to create and share locations/KML (shapes, points and lines) created via the Google Maps interface. I realize that another system is being used on various articles in Wikipedia (to tell you the truth, I can't find such an article right now -- if you know what I'm talking about, could you point me in the right direction?). Have you considered this issue on hitchwiki.org? I.e., should we stick to one solution for providing on-line mapping of coordinates for hitching places? Has such a solution already been implemented? Ideally, such a solution should be open, editable and transparent. I've added a link to a Google Maps point I have created for Janki, a popular hitching spot in Warsaw. The problem is that the point is not editable by anyone besides me (of course, anyone may simply change the link.) What are your thoughts on this? Also, what would be a more appropriate place to post such questions, so that all the editors may read and comment on the issue? (Still new here).

Pozdraw,
Arthur
: At the moment, we use to add direct links to www.liftershalte.info to articles, and mark the hitching spots there. [[Liftershalte.info]] is based on google maps, created by me and hosted on the same Server as hitchwiki.
: I'm planning to add the possibility to include liftershalte-maps directly into hitchwiki-articles, but this doesn't seem to be trivial and I don't have much time at the moment, so it could take a while to implement this.

Hi thanks for that, I was just feeling a bit lost with all the structure and on how to get back into the writing. Especially as matter to keep my writings systematic, but also maybe to ensure a certain similarity of the information throughout the various cities and countries? We keep in touch about that!
I definitely can make some entry for Djibouti! [[User:Maplefanta|Maplefanta]] 00:15, 16 March 2009 (UTC)
Pleasure and no worries, for most of them I tried to make some equal adjustment between the various pages. I will still work in it. I seem to mainly have a problem of finding a structure to follow when I start a new page. [[User:Maplefanta|Maplefanta]] 02:55, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
==Hitchwiki Maps Questions==
Hi guaka. Greets! --[[User:Paluch|Paluch]] 17:30, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
Plus plus I didn't notice how to put personal comments so I just added them to he articles because I think there are very useful to the exciting ones as little improvment. For example you have Duisburg where I stucked and if somebody have written that Düsseldorf is just few Euros away I wouldn't sleep on gas station that night etc...
Why doesnt hitchwiki work together with wikitravel? It seems to me senseless that there are two wiki sites with city-like pages. -- 11:03, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

:Practical answer: Wikitravel is owned and controlled by a company, they put ads on the site and you can't download the database dump (I've asked for this, even before Wikitravel was sold out to Internet Brands). This is quite different from [[Hitchwiki:How_we_want_to_keep_Hitchwiki|how we want to keep Hitchwiki]].
:Content related answer: 1. I don't think Wikitravel would want to include extended information about hitchhike spots inside cities. 2. Hitchhikers are often not tourists.
:There are probably some more good reasons I can come up with... Nevertheless, Wikitravel is using the same CC-BY-SA license now, so feel free to copy text back and forth :) [[User:Guaka|guaka]] 11:19, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

:: I understand all that but still it seems to me pointless, to spread out user generated traveling sites. Have a nice day. -- 15:13, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
::: Hitchhiking is not a method of travelling, but a method of transportation. Wikitravel would not want as detailed information as we have, and our information is exclusively about hitchhiking. --[[User:MrTweek|MrTweek]] 15:49, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

:::: Well not exclusively, we do have information about where to sleep, but we would never have information about 5 star hotels in articles here, or about museums and fancy restaurants and information about rock bottom budget food kinda moved to [[:trash:|Trashwiki]] :) [[User:Guaka|guaka]] 16:05, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
:Pay tolls were not as great as e.g. in [[France]]. After 25 minutes or so with many many cars passing, mostly ignoring us, two trucks stopped. The Belgian dudes who were standing 100 meters further, right before the trucks, didn't bother to walk there. So after 1 minute I ran there and arranged a ride for me and Erga to [[Macelj-Kozminci border crossing|the border]]. We had to split up between the trucks but since it was only a short distance, and some German was spoken by the Turkish truckers we were okay with that. :Oh no, we were all right after the toll booths. The 2 trucks stopped. I was signalling the Belgians to go check if they can get a ride with them, but they didn't bother. So I went myself and scored the ride. [[User:Guaka|guaka]] 21:38, 2 September 2010 (UTC)
;Well, how to add my pictures now?
That's easy.
*First you upload the file. Click [[Special:Upload|here]] to do so. After uploading the image you have to remember the filename and return to this template.
*Second, you click on the '''edit''' Button at the top of the article. Then a textbox appears where you can change all the text here.
*Third, you type in the following code under the <nowiki>==Add your image(s) below==</nowiki> text, inside <nowiki><gallery></nowiki>-tags.

Image:Filename.jpg|DESCRIPTION

*Instead of ''Filename.jpg'' you fill in the name of the file, and instead of ''description''...well, you'll get it :)
*At all, '''don't panic''' about style and stuff. If you make a mistake, doesn't matter. The wiki-syntax isn't that easy, but there' enough hitchhikers out there who will fix it fast.
This is a template for the '''Picture of the Moment''' of the main page. '''Everybody''' is free to add his hitchhiking-pictures to the main page and share it together with all the hitchhikers out there. Maximum amount of pictures at one time is '''3'''.
;Well, how to add my pictures now?

*Thanks a lot!

Hi there, my name is Gerben. I'm a Dutch student in civil engineering. I'm on the road quite a lot, and mostly hitchhiking. Apart from the obvious fact that it saves travelcosts, everytime I'm home for a while I get this weird feeling. I just want to hitchhike somewhere. So I usually do:)
I hitchhike for fun, and sometimes really just because it saves money. This only happens on short distances though. I hitchhike through the Netherlands quite often, and make trips from here to all kinds of places. Hope to make it into Asia one day. Got as far as St.Petersburg and Moscow so far in that direction.
I'm not so much into statistics, although I like to keep my notebooks with all my signs as souvenirs:) And ofcourse some extremes are nice to remember, such as my ride at 260km/h around Berlin, and a 2 day ride with a Polish trucker, or hitchhiking in total darkness in the Highlands of Scotland.

I'll add some more info later. My hc and cs username is the same: gerbennap
Gerbennaphttps://hitchwiki.org/en/index.php?title=User:Gerbennap&diff=16813User:Gerbennap2007-12-29T22:07:48Z
Gerbennap:
