In Peru hitchhiking is quite doable although you are usually expected to contribute to fuel cost a little bit. It is nonetheless cheaper to travel by hitchhiking than taking a bus which, in fact, is a pretty cheap way of travelling, too.
Stuttgart is a city in the German state Baden-Württemberg.

Hitching out
Direction East 8
Loffelstrasse is probably the best spot in Stuttgart to hitch east to the A8 towards Ulm and Munich. You can probably head west from here as well.

Direction North 81
Possibility 1
Esso petrol station Heilbronnerstr:
From Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) take Metro U5, U6 or U7 just one stop to "Türlenstraße/Bürgerhospital". Leave the station in driving direction and walk about 100 metres up the hill. On the right side there is the petrol station where many people fill there tanks before they're entering the motorway.

You can also stay some meters before the petrol station. There is a little green area and after that a departure for a car park or something like this. With a good sign you get lots of the traffic out of Stuttgart heading towards the highway and they can stop quite easy. Took me one hour at a Friday to get a straight ride till Würzburg.

Possibility 2
From Hauptbahnhof (Central Station) take Metro 15/U5 to "Borsigstraße". When you leave the train, there is one petrol station in front of you (direction of the train) and one petrol station behind you. The petrol station behind you is a better spot to hitchhike because the cars have a better opportunity to stop and the petrol station is a little bit bigger than the other one. Most of the cars that stop there go on the motorway ("Autobahn") A81. In average I needed about 15 minutes to get a ride (on weekends).

When you are on motorway (Autobahn) A 81 you can jump off on the resting place called "Wunnenstein" that has also a petrol station and is between Stuttgart and Heilbronn or rather the departure to motorway (Autobahn) A 6. From there you can get rides to the north or west. But there I sometimes had to wait longer (about 45 minutes in average) to get a ride to the north because a lot of cars are going to the west. Be careful at "Wunnenstein" – there are constant police raids because of drugs – hitching is no problem.

The United States of America as a country is divided up into 50 states; for the convenience of the common hitchhiker these states are discussed in detail along with their capitals at the following pages (see below). The US are bordered by Canada to the North and Mexico to the South.

Hitching, like everything else in America, varies greatly depending on what type of area and what part of the country you are passing through. In general you can get rides fairly easily if you hitchhike the right way; in fact oftentimes you can find more than just rides, such as offers for free meals, invitations to homes and parties, etc.

In most states you can´t hitch from the interstates (motorways) themselves, but you can always stand on the on-ramp (entry ramp) like in Europe. In a select few areas (such as certain towns or municipal areas) hitching is illegal everywhere, however de facto it is still allowed. The police in a region may interpret laws related to hitchhiking differently, at times forcing a hitchhiker to choose an alternate route by walking or using other means of transportation. In most cases, though, hitchhiking is legal or tolerated as long as you are not on the interstate itself, where it is rightly considered a safety issue and behaving correctly. There are also many limited-access highways (i.e. with on ramps and off ramps) that are not part of the interstate system; these typically prohibit hitchhiking as well (other than at the on ramp).

In the West Coast it's generally easier to hitchhike. In Oregon it's even legal to hitchhike right on the interstates.

A lot of people in the United States are profoundly religious. If you're not, try to deal with it in a positive way and accept the difference. More often you will be picked up by really cool people! Most of the time Guaka was dropped off exactly at his point of destination.

Car License Plate
Every States are issuing their own specific car plates. For example, a car from Alabama will have a specific Car license tagged as such.

Long vs. short distance
If you're going for speed over a long distance (3+ hours), then the best bet is to stay on the interstates (designated by "I-##) instead of local highways. Try to stick to on-ramps that have truck stops, rest stops, or any other reason for drivers to stop there (restaurants, gas stations, etc.) You can also look for rides at the truck stops themselves, but be discreet about it as some staffs or customers are rather unfriendly to hitchers and will rudely ask you to leave their property if not call the police on you.

If you are only going a few hundred kilometers, you can often make better time on state or local roads. There are many more places to wait at, and there is much more potential traffic. Most of the traffic on the Interstate system won't be able to notice you while on the on-ramp. Even if you are going long distances, if you aren't concerned about making good time then getting off the interstates can be a very rewarding experience. Local highways and smaller roads will grant you a better picture of what local life is like in that area, and typically offer a greater variety of drivers.

Police
Often, particularly close to major cities, the police will ask you for photo ID, but as long as you have one with you (such as a passport) there shouldn't be a problem. Most of the time they will be friendly when you come up clean, sometimes even driving you to a better spot.

In some states, like New Jersey and New York State, on the East Coast and Nevada and Arizona in the West, hitchhiking is illegal - though in most it's not. Even if it's not actually illegal, the police can ticket you for loitering or vagrancy.

Eat
On the back of receipts at all Burger King restaurants in the U.S., there is a toll-free phone number and a blank coupon. Call the number and you will be connected to an automated customer satisfaction poll. At the end of the poll, you will be given a code to enter into the blank spot on the coupon on the back of your receipt. The coupon is good for a free chicken sandwich or small whopper with purchase of a drink or fries. Pick up a large cup outside in the rubbish and refill it inside free of charge. At some Burger Kings, your meal is free if they don't give you a receipt (there's no way you can lose!).

Dumpster Diving
The United States among the top of wasteful societies (if not the top). The advent of urban sprawl has the side-effect of creating many opportunities for Dumpster Diving in urban areas. Grocery stores are prime targets for food (Trader Joe's is really wasteful and has lots of organics). Grocery stores cannot sell packaged foods past their expiration date, and so throw them away in dumpsters behind the store.
Hitching Out
South or North, towards Valencia, Girona, Perpignan, France
Option 1: Take train S2 from Barcelona Plaça Catalunya to Sabadell-Rambla, and get off at station St. Joan (2 zones). It is another 10–15 minute walk to a good restarea at the AP7, the main highway to the North (Girona and France in direction of Perpignan) or South.

Get out of the station on the left side, and take the road that follows the railtrack. After a leftturn, take the third street to the right and follow this until you get on C/ de Bellaterra. You should be able to spot the restarea after less then a 5 minute walk from here. To hitch South, stay on that side, to hitch North, take the footbridge.
* Location

Option 2: Take the Renfe train to Castellbisbal station from Barcelona Sants (Line C4 to St. Vicente de Calders, platform 1, buy a 2 zone ticket), Plaça Catalunya or Arc de Triomf. Walk back up the railtracks in the direction that you came from, for about ten minutes until you see a service station on your left. To hitch North, cross the road via the footbridge. To hitch South, stay on that side of the road.

Alternatively, you can walk out of the main exit of the train station, and take the first turn right. Walk straight on from there, keeping the highway on your right hand-side.
* Location

Option 3: Take the metro and get off at Monumental. From there pass by the Plaça de Toros (Bullfight Arena) and stand in the last traffic light of the Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes corner Carrer Padilla before the ramp entrance to the highway C-31. When the light turns red ask people if they're heading towards the highway. If so, ask them if they can take you to the first gas station (gasolinera)... Off you go to France!

Anecdotes
Copied from the talk page:
: "I hitched from Castellbisbal in August 2006. Instead of walking back along the tracks, I crossed the road and walked down the hill, by some allotments. The guy who worked at the station pointed to the two mountains and told me to go between them. I did, and it worked. I passed under a bridge via a dirt track (the road was being built as I passed) and just past that, on my right, was the service station. I hoped the fence, crossed the footbridge, and hitched south in the shadow of a big 'X' monument. After about an hour and a half, I got picked up by an off-duty police who'd been in Barcelona for a health check up. He gave me a ride all the way to Amposta, and sang Kylie Minogue songs. Good times."

Getting in
From France
On the main highway from France to Barcelona, some cars are being stopped at the border for checks. While riding into Spain (Catalunya), there are several big rest areas along that road. You can either ask your driver to stop you somewhere along that road at towns that have train stations, such as Girona, or better Rubí or San Cugat, or get out off the car at a restarea for a ride into Barcelona. A ticket generally cost you between €1,20 (San Cugat/ Rubí) and €10 (Girona).

You can also try to get a ride to the Costa Brava, where there are many train stations with trains to Barcelona. There is a cheap train service (in 2004 the ticket for the longest distance was 4 euro) along the coast all the way into Barcelona.

Sleep
When staying on the beach in Barcelona, you may notice the thieves. They walk around, and watch people who are staying on the beach for hours before taking anything. Though they aren't hostile or confrontational, they can steal the clothes off your back if you let them. The only way to keep your pack for sure, is to bury it in the sand, and sleep on top of it. Sleeping with your head on your bag is just not enough.

Another option is sleeping in the roundabout of the Colom monument near the port at the end of Las Ramblas, if you dont worry about all the traffic nearby. You can sleep near the lion statues and as long as you are low-key about it the police and anyone else should leave you alone. Zac did this is October of 2006 and had no problems with thieves, but discretion is still wise.

Another great option is to take a late train to the natural park in the nortwest of barcelona. For example, you can take the S2 to Sabadell (til 11.30, ticket zone 1), leaving from Placa de Catalunya, and go to Beixador de Vallvidrera : Here is a big park which is nearly like a forest, you will find a very good, lonesome place to stay within 500 metres.

stub
If you've never hitchhiked before, you have to get over your first time hitchhiking fear. Every hitchhiker went through this. The first time, standing on the side of the road, heart pounding.

To get over this, just do it!

Prepare yourself: buy a map, check out the Top Tips, other pages on this wiki, other hitchhiking websites. Make sure you know what a good spot means, and that you know some good spots on the trip you're making.

First time hitchhiking doesn't necessarily mean a short trip -- but starting with a short trip might help you get used to the motions and what to expect. Take a day trip to the next town! This said, don't prepare too much. Decide where you're going, the best road to get there, walk a distance, and at a good spot face the traffic and stick up your thumb. You'll feel like the center of attention at first, but after a while you'll get used to it, and will become more concerned with trying to "win a ride" than your worries about what you're doing.

:I tried to hitchhike before, but those were complete failures, without a map, with no clue about hitchhiking. Then one moment, living in Paris, I found myself with 200 euros and the wish to go to Barcelona. So I tried again! It was great! I waited more than 2 hours in Paris and it took me a day and a half.

Germany is a great country for hitchhiking. Just make sure you get on the Autobahn (motorway)! There it is best to get to a Raststätte (service area) where drivers can legally stop and get from one to another. You will often find maps with the motorways and the service areas along them. On most on ramps you will get also reasonably fast a ride. Just make sure not to end up on a "Schnellstrasse" (leading to the on ramp), where cars go fast and cannot stop.

In Germany there are no speed limits on many highways. So you might first want to try to get a ride with fast cars before asking truck drivers! Trucks are great during nighttime, but like in France, there are restrictions to when they might drive. In Germany, most trucks aren't allowed to drive on Sundays or public holidays until 22:00.
License plates
In Germany license plates start with an abbreviation of the region where the car is registered. So look out for number plates starting with B if you're hitching to Berlin!

:See German car number plates and List of abbreviations used (in German) on Wikipedia for more information.

Border crossings
Germany implemented the Schengen Agreement. This means, that the border to other Schengen countries are open. At the borders to non-Schengen countries (Poland, Czech Republic and Switzerland) there are still checkpoints and German custom officers or sometimes police might control your luggage. These border crossings are usually among the best places in Europe to find a long distance ride. If you hitchhike on the border stand well behind the border pass on or close to the edge of the border control area and additional services (shops and parkings) and the beginning of the motorway or national road. It is best to leave the car 100-200 meter (in stead of 10 meter) after the border; in that case border guardians rarely bother about hitchhikers.

Maps
If you're not staying very long in Germany you can make it with any map of Germany showing you the gas stations on the highway. Go to any gas station along the highways and ask for a "Autobahn-Guide". This "Autobahn-Guide" is for free! You'll get a map with an overview of all gas stations along the highways. More Information you can find here: tank.rast.de. You can also find more detailed maps there for ~5 Euro.

Very good maps for hitchhiking are Michelin Regional, the orange ones with the numbers 541-546. There are six of them, each covering a different part of Germany.

They are very detailed, on the motorway they show every single gas station, hotel, restaurant, or parking place and they also have town maps for any bigger town within the covered area.

Ratio is 1:350000. You can usually get them in local bookstores for about EUR 8.

Eat
Try to avoid eating on service stations on the motorways. They are very expensive (you even have to pay for the toilets) and the food is usually very bad.
At some service stations with a Sanifair system you get a EUR 0,50 bill for the toilet. You can buy things for EUR 0,50 with it at the petrol station shop and at the restaurant.
You can drink water from the tap nearly everywhere in Germany.

Keep in mind that most shops (including supermarkets) are not allowed to open on Sundays. There are no 24h-shops, but gas stations often offer a limited food section.
In bigger cities you can usually get the cheapest food at the various Turkish and Italian Restaurants.

Mitfahrgelegenheit
Mitfahrgelegenheit is a website that people use to find rides or passengers. Often passengers are supposed to pay. And often you will find yourself being asked to pay for a ride. Refuse to pay if it's asked when you're getting out, and consider it when it's asked before you get in the car ("blah blah, because it would not be fair to the passengers who pay"). Guaka is not sure how to deal with it, and accepted to pay only once, for a 250 km ride when it was already 18:00 or so. It might be possible to explain the bunch of people that people hitchhike to not pay, and that it can be considered a choice to use the website, and that picking up hitchhikers can be done irregardless of whether other people pay for rides or not.

Dol de Bretagne is a tiny city in Britanny (western part of France) between Dinan and Rennes on the road of Caen. If you get there, you will have not a lot of chance to be taken. Between one hours or one days of waiting maybe. The best place to be taken are the road the highway.
Hey,
When you were hitchhiking in Serbia did you do a lot of camping? I'm a bit concerned about camping in places like Serbia and Croatia, where they apparently have unexploded mines still lying around in various places. Do you know if these are quite common and/or if the areas are closed off or what?
Thanks! :)
It'd be nice to camp out in the wild there but I don't fancy having an 'explosive' time!
We don't really have a policy about this, but MrTweek and I decided to "promote" some more people to sysops on the wiki. Of course we noticed your great contributions and decided to make you into a sysop :) Check project:administrators to read (a little bit) more about this. Thanks! :) (Not sure if I'm posting my reply in the correct place here.) How was hitchhiking in the Balkans? Do you recommend solo hitchhiking at all? I'm starting to wonder if hitchhiking by myself for my first time could be a bad idea and become lonely, but I'm sure it would give me more opportunities for meeting people along the way!

Saint-Brieuc is one the most important town in Britanny with Brest, Rennes, Lorient.
In the entrance of the hight way, the times of waiting moves between 30 minutes and 1h30...if it's raining. It's up to you to show or not in a placard where you go, people will stop if your face is good. If you have courage, do not hesitate to go to a car in a fire stop and ask..freely and simply.
The best place remain the gas station before and after the citie if you come from outside the place.
