'''North and Interior towards (A1) Aveiro, Porto, Braga; (A25) Guarda'''
Go walking (Coimbra is a small town, you don't need to take the bus) in the direction of "Avenida Fernão Magalhães" (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=pt-BR&tab=wl ''from Hotel Astoria to Avenida Fernão Magalhães'' or ''from Santa Cruz Church to Avenida Fernão Magalhães''). All the cars that are travelling direction north must go there. As there is a big amount of traffic there, they drive really slow and you can easily stay on the right side of the road.

'''South towards (A1) Lisboa, Évora, Faro'''
Go to the down town (Portagem) and cross the ''Santa Clara bridge''. You can easily see the signs that say 'Lisboa A1'. Just follow it. You can put yourself on the right side of the road ''Avenida de Conimbriga'' and wait there for a hitch hike.

'''Kiruna''' the most nothern town in [[Sweden]]. It is a famous iron mining town so don't be scared if you hear explosion at night that shake whatever building you might be staying in. It also has the famous ice hotel and, most importantly, one of the best views of Aurora Borealis.

===Heading Southeast to [[Luleå]] or [[Finland]]===

In Kiruna there are only two main roads heading in the direction you want to go. These streets are '''Lombololeden''' or '''Malmvägen''', it is a small town so if you head down either of these roads to the East then you'll eventually find the roundabout where the two of them meet. Only ''Lombololeden'' follows the [[E10]] the entire way.

Ray hitchhiked out of the roundabout at '''Österleden''' and '''Lombololeden''' and had no problem finding a truck going all the way to Finland. Many trucks pass through Kiruna from [[Narvik]] in [[Norway]].

'''Batumi''' is a city in [[Georgia (country)|Georgia]] on the Black Sea, an important port and border crossing to [[Turkey]].

== Hitchhiking out ==

=== Northeast to [[Poti]], [[Samtredia]], [[Zugdidi]], [[Kutaisi]], [[Tbilisi]] ===
==== Option 1 ====
A good strategy for hitchhiking northeast is to take a ''marshrutka'' from the taxi stand at the eastern end of Chavchavadze St., where it joins the main coastal road, to the town of Kobuleti about 20 km north. Get off at the first (southernmost) stop in Kobuleti, follow the northeast road for a couple of hundred metres, and just after the railroad tracks there is an interection with a sign for Samtredia.

==== Option 2 ====
From the city center, you can also walk the main road in direction road. There will be a huge building with a Cola-Cola sign on it. There you can just stand on the road side.

== South towards [[Turkey]] ==
Just walk towards the south of Batumi and get on the big road to Turkey. Hitch a ride with anyone going to the border and cross it on foot. The wait won't be long if you're not from Georgia or Turkey. From there, go right and hitch along the coast. Or take bus 101 from the Central Bus Station, it goes directly to the border, 1 ticket is around 80 Tetri.

The road south enters Turkey at the [[Sarp-Sarpi border crossing]].

== Sleeping ==

The cheapest sleeping is around the bazaar, where there are some cheap hotels and nearly every family rents out rooms. Even in high season a room for two people can be had for 20 lari. There are also some cheap hostels.

'''Newcastle Upon Tyne''' is a city in the [[North East (England)|North East]] of England. The main access roads to the city are the A69 and the A1(M).

== Heading West ([[Carlisle]], M6, A74(M))==
Take the 39 or 40 bus to ''Leamington Road Ends'' (Exit junction from A69 near the start. Walk down to the other side of the junction and onto the A69. The filter lane is very long and is never busy. The traffic on the A69 is usually not going too fast; this is an excellent spot for cars to pull over. Consider waiting for a ride all the way to Carlisle, as it can occasionally be complicated hitching on the A69 Itself.

Bus stop ''Denton Burn, West Road-The Ramparts'' works as well. Take bus 10 or 11 from the Central Station. One of these buses stops right there, the other one turns right two crossings earlier (West Rd/Slatyford Ln, there is a pedestrian brigde over the street). From there, you have to get back on West Road and continue walking west. You'll find the bus stop about 800ft/250m behind the big intersection.

== South toward [[Leeds]], [[Manchester]], [[London]]... A1(M) ==
Catch the bus 21 or 22 (heading Gateshead) until the stop ''Durham road - Harlow Green Infants'' which is just in front of a petrol station.
You can as well catch the 1 or the 2 and get off at Allerdene (ask maybe to be the closer than Durham road) and then get up the bridge which is Durham road, and where you will see the petrol station.
It could seem like there are not a lot of people, but just ask for the next services 5 miles down the road toward the A1, there are a lot of cars who go down to the south, and so it's easy to get a long lift. Good luck guys!

If you are going very far South (London etc.) you should consider going to Carlisle and hitching down the [[M6 (GB)|M6]]. The M6 is usually busier than the A1/A1(M), and you are more likely to be left at Service stations, rather than roundabouts and junctions.
Kbhttps://hitchwiki.org/en/index.php?title=Newcastle&diff=57285Newcastle2011-11-11T16:20:49Z
Kb:

== Pepper Spray, CS Gas ==
I do not agree with ''pepper spray''. If you spray it in the closed car, it will affect you too. I think it just make things worse. [[User:Mirto|Mirto]]

:I was told about pepper foam by a driver once as an counter-argument for my defense for not having pepperspray. The foam would have the advantage not to be so volatile in a closed environment such as a car, but I have no experience in the matter. He recommended using >10,000 BTU foam.
:Good to know: Using pepperspray (or foam) as a defense against humans is illegal in many countries (in the UK even simple posession is not legal, apparently). For this reason, defensive gases used are usually CS Spray, a tear gas that can sadly not be used in a foam form. More on Wikipedia: [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pepper_spray Pepper Spray] and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CS_gas CS Gas] --[[User:Perilisk|Perilisk]] 20:42, 8 January 2010 (UTC)

::CS can also come as a gel or foam, which would be safer to use inside of a car. --[[User:Kb|Kb]] 14:24, 9 January 2010 (UTC)
== Safety in extreme climates ==
This page covers the perceived danger from other humans. How about creating separate pages which deal with extreme climates, such as hitching in the extreme cold in Winter - eg Russia, Northern China, Canada, Scandinavia? There must be people on this site who are well aware of how to protect themselves when stuck outside in this weather. Topics might include sleeping outside, warming up, how to set up camp. What to buy beforehand to prepare for this. Similarly, another page detailing hitching in very hot conditions, like in the desert, would be very helpful.--[[User:haggismn|haggismn]] 18:47, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

:Not trying to discourage you, but have you seen this page: [[Winter]]? I think this article and your new one should be merged since it's nearly the same issue. By the way: Thumbs up for all your contributions in the last days! --[[User:Kb|Kb]] 23:24, 31 October 2011 (CET)
Kbhttps://hitchwiki.org/en/index.php?title=Oskarshamn&diff=56934Oskarshamn2011-10-23T20:53:16Z
Kb:

This is a template for the '''Picture of the Moment''' of the main page. '''Everybody''' is free to add his hitchhiking-pictures to the main page and share it together with all the hitchhikers out there. Maximum amount of pictures at one time is '''3'''.
;Well, how to add my pictures now?
That's easy.
*First you upload the file. Click [[Special:Upload|here]] to do so. After uploading the image you have to remember the filename and return to this template.
*Second, you click on the '''edit''' Button at the top of the article. Then a textbox appears where you can change all the text here.
*Third, you type in the following code under the <nowiki>==Add your image(s) below==</nowiki> text, inside <nowiki><gallery></nowiki>-tags.

Image:Filename.jpg|DESCRIPTION

*Instead of ''Filename.jpg'' you fill in the name of the file, and instead of ''description''...well, you'll get it :)
*At all, '''don't panic''' about style and stuff. If you make a mistake, doesn't matter. The wiki-syntax isn't that easy, but there' enough hitchhikers out there who will fix it fast.
*Thanks a lot!
'''Ecuador''' is great for [[hitchhiking]], just be careful in some places, especially at the coast. Many pick-up trucks are there. Drivers might ask for money, but if you can explain your situation you will get away with it. Many Ecuadorians are happy to pick up a foreigner. It's not the safest country to hitchhike though.

Along the [[Panamericana]] there are several Toll-Stations ("Peaje"). Take an overland bus in direction of your destination and get out at the first toll station (normally 0,25cts - 0,50cts). You have a couple of seconds to ask the other drivers until you get kicked out by the police, but that's normally enough time to find a ride. If you are able to explain your situation in Spanish, you might be able to stay longer. If you want to avoid this kind of "trouble" you can as well try to stop cars along the Panamericana. Along this road normally you won't get asked for money.

Buses in Ecuador are quite cheap (usually 1$/h), and will usually stop anywhere. On some roads, though, there are no buses at all, in which case hitchhiking can be a good alternative, and you will be most likely picked up quickly as well, though it is more difficult to find a free ride on small roads. Very often the very first car that passes will pick you up.

{{IsIn|Finland}}
'''Kuru''' is a former municipality of [[Finland]], now part of the town of [[Ylöjärvi]]. The municipality's population was about 2,000.

== Hitchhiking out ==

=== South to [[Tampere]] or [[Helsinki]] ===

Most southbound traffic from Kuru follows Road 65 to [[Tampere]] or the smaller city Ylöjärvi (about 20km outside Tampere). You should be picked up even if you don't use a sign, as the area is not very populated and most people would assume you are going to Tampere anyway. However, as always, use of a sign increases your chances of getting picked up.

There is a bus stop a bit further South from the crossroad between Virastotie and Poikuleksuntie, which cars can use to pull over (and also provides shelter from rain). If you continue for about 500m on that road, you will find a hardware store and a SEO gas station (almost next to the Myllymäentie/Poikuleksuntie crossroad) which could be worth a try.

There is also a ABC gas station in the city centre, next to a "Sale" supermarket, so it might be worth checking that out as well.

To continue to Helsinki once you're in a car to Tampere, check [[Tampere|this page]].

== Around the city ==

There isn't much to do or see in Kuru, but despite its small size Kuru has two supermarkets, a medical centre, a bank, and three pubs/restaurants. The reason for that is that it used to be the centre of the municipality, so a lot of people from smaller neighbouring towns/villages used to go there for their necessities.

There is also a second-hand shop, a pharmacy, a sports centre and gym, but Kuru is mostly known for the forestry department of Tampere College (Tampereen Ammattiopisto Metsäoppilatos) which teaches courses in Forestry, Nature and Wilderness Guiding, and Forestry Machine Operators, among others.

Kuru is next to lake Yläisjärvi and also the bigger lake Näsijärvi, which goes all the way to Tampere.

Hey, welcome to the hitchwiki. Thanks for the new Magdeburg layout, might be an idea to adopt this one. See you on the road, [[User:platschi|platschi]][http://blogs.hitchwiki.org/platschi site], [[user talk:platschi|wikitalk]] 03:46, 6 March 2008 (CET)
:Yeah, at least in Magdeburg the usual style would be either confusing or imprecise and therefore confusing. I will keep this kind of layout in mind for similar cases. --[[User:Kb|Kb]] 21:42, 6 March 2008 (CET)
==Category==
Hi! Your user page category has been changed to '''Category:Hitchhikers''' because from now on this will be a standard categorization for hitchhikers on hitchwiki.org (see [[Category talk:Hitchhikers|this discussion here]] for the reasons of doing so). If you want to be categorized by country, too, chose your country from the categories on [[:Category:Hitchhikers]] page (or create your own one if the country of your current location is not on the list - in case you need help with that, please write about it [[User_talk:Sigurdas|here]]).

Happy hitching,

p.s. you can delete this msg if you want.
'''Keswick''' (pronounced /ˈkɛzɨk/) is a small town in the [[Lake District]] National Park in [[Cumbria]], England. Due to the beautiful surrounding landscape, which is attracting many hikers, Keswick is strongly influenced by tourism and thus provides a lot of commercial accommodation facilities and (but maybe that's a rumour) cheap outdoor equipment shops.

If you pass by, you can also pay a visit to the ''Castlerigg stone circle'', which is located 2 km east of the town.
From the centre of Rimini you can easily walk to Via Circonvallazione Nuova, which is the road SS16 going around Rimini. When you go on Via Covignano, which is quite long, and meet Via Circonvallazione Nuova (SS16) you'll have to cross SS16 and walk right after crossing it. After a few meters you'll find a drive way to a company where you can stand. Cars are driving pretty slow so it's easy for the drivers to either pull over or just stop to pick you up.
