== About ==
22 years old hitchhiker from more places in [[Czech Republic]]. Hitchhiked in around 37 mostly European countries.

I prefer hitchhiking solo - it's much simpler, people are friendlier and more hospitable and I can have closer contact with drivers, sometimes I feel like psychologist - and with thumb rather than asking people - I like to wait for somebody who take me because he wants, it's worth it

There is no season for hitchhiking, every day is good enough. I've experienced temperatures from -25 to +44 °C but comfort more depends on humidity and wind so the worst was -8 in February 2012 near Genéve and maybe +30 in July 2012 at the coast around Turkey/Georgia border.

I don't use CS/BW for surfing, mostly sleep outdoor and sometimes drivers invite me home (yes it's nice to have a shower). I usually carry heavy backpack with some mountaineering equipment.
'''bold''' - first hitchhiking there; ''italics'' - only get in or through by hitching, didn't hitch in the country

I was at European hitchgatherings in [[Portugal]], 2010 and in [[Slovakia]], 2013; participated in 11-11-11 Hitchhiking contest [[Paris]]-[[Dakar]] and in Czech Hitchhiking Championship 2014 [[Prague]]-[[Gibraltar]]-[[Prague]] -> lost completely :D well perhaps racing and hitchhiking don't go along for me.

'''The international E-road network''' is a numbering system for roads in Europe developed by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). The network is numbered from E 1 up and its roads cross national borders. It also reaches Central Asian countries like Kyrgyzstan, since they are members of the UNECE.

West-East roads have even numbers and North-South roads have odd numbers.
Hodně štěstí během současné cesty i těch budoucích ;-) --[[User:Xkomczax|Xkomczax]] ([[User talk:Xkomczax|talk]]) 22:08, 16 January 2013 (CET)
== Ukraine ==

I hitchhike long distances in Ukraine at least three times a year, and I agree with the previous wording on the [[Ukraine]] article that it is rare for drivers to expect money. Sure, it happens, but the vast majority of drivers know what ''avtostop'' is: a way for backpackers to move long distances with no money. I've had less than 10 rides in UA, and they were short, but I was not asked for money. Ukrainian Wikipedia article on hitchhiking does not mention that paying for a ride is common in UA. --[[User:Fverhart|Fverhart]] ([[User talk:Fverhart|talk]]) 20:02, 20 September 2014 (UTC)

:Thanks for taking care, I asked my friend who hitched with me there and not so many drivers wanted money actually. Just my memory made it worse. We hitched around 740 km in the south (that was my worst hitching experience, reading hitchwiki page later was like wtf?) and 360 km in the west (that was much better). But still at least 3 drivers (out of 15 maybe) wanted money, one agreed to take us for free and then was really rude at the end. So I disagree with previous version: ''do not be surprised if you are occasionally asked for money from drivers. It is rare, but it does happen.'' Would you guys agree with: ''do not be surprised if you are sometimes asked for money from drivers.'' ? It's definitely not often nor rare. Hi Kundrt,

You should be able to use the .svg flags, they are automagically pulled in from Wikemedia commons. See for example the [http://hitchwiki.org/en/User:Prino/log/summary#Country_Summary Country Summary] on one of my log pages.
== Your map - highliting your map with red drawing ==

Hi Kundrt. Thanks for a very useful pages. Happy for your courage to travel by hitch - hiking. We love this kind of travel but would love to have some kind of a map tracking our yourneys and we just love your one. How can we proceed, please? --[[User:Mik013|Mik013]] 17:30, 16 August 2016 (CET)

:Hi. I think that Kundrt isn't very active anymore here, let's see! Your question inspired me to figure out how he made this map. One way to log your trips is on www.hitchlog.com. It's a kind of hh diary which is quite nice. Check that site. And now for the map Kundrt made. It's made in Google Fusion Styles and the input is a KML file. This means you need to create a KML file with your trips (lines) in it. There are different ways to do it, this is how I did it. You need: Google Earth, Google My Maps, Google Drive and Google Fusion Maps. All of these are for free, the first is an installable program, the other are webbased services (or websites). In Google My Maps you can draw lines. In the past the number of lines was limited to about 18 or so (if you drew more, My Maps would not always display them all). You can save your map in Google Drive. Since you need to draw more lines than fit in one Google My Maps map, you need to make more, so name them wisely. E.g. I draw 15 lines in each map, and save them as "hitchhike trips 001-015", "hitchhike trips 016-30" etc. If you have drawn all lines and saved everything, you can export each individual map "as KML" from Google My Maps. You can load these KML files in Google Earth, which allows you to save all of them (merged) as one (big) KML file. You need then in Google Drive to add Google Fusion Tables app. The way to do this is explained here https://support.google.com/fusiontables/answer/2527132?hl=en&topic=2573107&ctx=topic Once you have installed the app to Google Drive, you can start Google Fusion Tables app. When you do this, you will be prompted to "Import new table", this is where you choose the merged big KML file. Pfew!!!! It's not so easy and a lot of work.. obviously but the result looks slick. Thanks to your question, I found this all out, and I just created my own cool map: https://fusiontables.googleusercontent.com/embedviz?q=select+col2+from+1kkhyp-UjobDola_820_lqlhlRrNJ164qbpfSrucX&viz=MAP&h=false&lat=51.28058058188785&lng=14.601520124999979&t=1&z=5&l=col2&y=2&tmplt=2&hml=KML How much work was this? Well, it took many hours / days to draw the 369 lines in my map. It took an hour to save, copy, merge, save and import everything... Note, my map contains my trip until 09.2006, or about 35% of my total mileage --[[User:Fverhart|Fverhart]] ([[User talk:Fverhart|talk]]) 01:57, 17 August 2016 (CEST)
::Hey Mik and Frank,
::I don't use internet that much nowadays (and don't hitch that much either) but I plan to update map and some HW pages during winter.
::That map at my profile I made almost exactly how Frank described. But it used to be much easier before Google screwed maps. Now it's really limited. I also added one or more columns to Fusion table and deleted some useless columns. And it added extra work to it, now I'd have to convert all kml files from Google Maps or Google Earth to my kml file with colums exatly like in my Fusion table before uploading it there.
::Then I touched Fusion table's limitation, you can see it when you zoom out my map (I think it can show max. 100000 points or something.). So I've found CartoDB. It works better and seems easier to understand styling the lines, add a legend etc. See my map there: https://kundrt.carto.com/viz/34469d1c-688b-11e5-88b5-0ea31932ec1d/embed_map But it also has some limitations. And it probably changed name and pricing (no free account anymore?).
::I want to add my bike + train trips to the map, so I will search for simple and not limited solution. I guess I'll have to use free javascript library (leaflet or something else) and create simple website for it. And I plan to buy gps tracker, I guess converting gpx from it will be much easier than drawing lines by hand. --[[User:Kundrt|Kundrt]] ([[User talk:Kundrt|talk]]) 14:58, 25 August 2016 (CEST)
Kundrthttps://hitchwiki.org/en/index.php?title=Karlovy_Vary&diff=82656Karlovy Vary2016-04-10T16:57:16Z
Kundrt:

'''Brno''' is the second largest city in the [[Czech Republic]].

== Hitching in ==

=== From [[Prague]] {{Dcz|1}}{{E|50}}{{E|65}} ===
If your driver is not going to the city but continue on this motorway, you can ask him to leave the motorway at the Vienna exit, and turn right onto a smaller road after 150 m. This road then leads under the large street ''Vídeňská'', where there is a tram stop. The driver can drive on to a roundabout and easily get back onto the D1.

At the Bratislava exit there is a shopping centre Avion with a free bus to the city centre. The driver can easily get back onto the D1 too by driving about 2 km.

If driver is going toward Vienna or Bratislava it's quite clear where to get off.

=== From [[Vienna]] {{Dcz|52}}{{E|461}} ===
If your driver is not going into Brno, ask him/her to drop you off at the "Futurum" shopping centre on the motorway. There you will find a free bus to central Brno.

=== From [[Bratislava]] {{Dcz|2}}{{E|65}} ===
If your driver is not going into Brno, you can jump off either at the "Olympia" or "Avion" shopping centre on the motorway. From both you will find a free bus to central Brno.

=== From [[Olomouc]], [[Kromeriz]] {{Dcz|1}} ===
'''If the driver continues to Prague''' jump off at OMV petrol station at the end of Brno (Starý Lískovec). There '''don't''' go though the appletree plantation - it is too complicated. Easier way is more hidden - go back next to the highway for about 300 m and then there is a path going under the motorway. Go left and you'll get to the town (and public transport) in 5 minutes.

'''If the driver continues to Bratislava''' jump off at IKEA.

'''If the driver continues to Vienna''' jump of at Futurum Shopping centre or at a petrol station in Modřice. At both places there is a tram route.

== Hitching out ==

=== Northwest towards [[Jihlava]], [[Praha]] {{Dcz|1}}{{E|50}}{{E|65}} ===

==== First option ====
This spot is quickly and easily accessible from various parts of Brno with hitchability from average to good. Find trolley-bus 25, 26 or 29 and get off at stop "Čtvrtě". From the bridge you can see big road to Prague. Go down and after 200 m there is smaller petrol station. Next to it is great place to hitchhike just a few metres from pump machines where you can ask people. Unfortunately on this lane often parks some truck or two so you can only hitchhike cars leaving station or ask.

If you get stuck here, you can try your luck in another spot which is quite close to this one. Walk towards the highway and the bridge over your road, climb up the bridge and follow the road NW until you see traffic lights and you can stand right after the lights where you get people from both directions. However, it's really difficult for drivers to stop here for you to get in. It's much, much better to just go to second option, it's not that far away.

==== Second option ====
15 minutes walk from stop "Osová" - trams 6, 8 or trolley-buses 25, 29 (terminus). From tram stop go up to the bridge. From trolley-buses loop go over the bridge. There is bus stop, you can take bus 69 to stop "Čermákova" or continue this wide road 400 m to the end - crossroad with new houses behind. You can already see the motorway and petrol station. But turn right. After 350 m you are at the bus stop "Čermákova". Turn left (street Čermákova) and at the end you can see small tunnel under motorway. Just before tunnel on the left you can go up and after 300 m you are at OMV petrol station. In winter could be hard to get there.

This station is bigger than the one at first option, little bit harder to access, good hitchability.

==== Third option ====
Small petrol station OMV on the motorway near Bosonohy - almost without cars. To Bosonohy, bus stop "Hoštická" you can get by bus 69 (from Masaryk's University campus, or trams 6, 8 stop "Dunajská"). Then go little bit back to the main road and right. After 1,5 km you will see that station. Or from "Dunajská" you can go by bus 401 or 402 (you have to pay the driver; once an hour) to request stop "Tranzitní plynovod". Just few metres back and right is that petrol station.

Nonsense to go here from Brno city. It was pure luck to get lift in 5 minutes. Getting there takes more time than average waiting time in 1st or 2nd spot.

==== Fourth option ====
'''*Temporarily closed due construction works on highway (checked: 11 May, 2015)'''
Bigger petrol station Shell on the motorway near Popůvky. A bit further from Brno (3 km after the Third option) but almost all cars go to Prague or even further. Take bus 401 or 402 (↑↑) to the "Popůvky - Vintrovna" stop. Continue on the main road 850 m and there is the spot. You can also walk & hitchhike to this place from Bosnohy.

=== South towards [[Bratislava]], [[Budapest]] {{Dcz|2}}{{E|65}} ===

==== First option ====
Take bus number 67, or the free "Avion bus" (it goes from 9am till 10pm every 20/30 minute) that starts on the bus stop "Úzká", and get off at the commercial zone “Avion”. There is a petrol station (where you can shower and even sleep) along the motorway which is going to [[Slovakia]]. It's a big commercial zone with big shops. One of them has free internet access, it's the electrical shop before Ikea.
This isn't the great spot, but there just isn't any better, so don't expect any miracles. [[User:Ondercan|Ondercan]] would say that the average waiting time is close to 2h and there's always a lot of local traffic near this mall. The petrol station is on the parallel road to the highway that goes directly to Bratislava so there aren't actually many cars going to Bratislava but mostly local people stopping by after shopping. Also it's almost impossible to hitchhike from the exit of Avion too, Ondercan stood there more than 2h with a sign with no success. In total Ondercan waited there more than 5h, when deciding to go back and take the train. While hopping the train it's important to remember that tickets are controlled twice, both after getting in the train and after entering Slovakia.

==== Second Option ====
This is probably a much better one than the first option. Take bus 40, 48, 59, 67 or the free "Avion bus" and get off at Hněvkovského. Walk 450m in the direction the bus was going (if you took the bus from the city center). After passing a crossroads with traffic lights, you will see a gas station. Now you can choose whether you approach people that stop at the gas station or stand at the beginning of the fairly long driveway to it.

=== South towards [[Vienna]] {{Dcz|52}}{{E|461}} ===

==== First option ====
Take the free bus from behind Tesco, at the tram 2 stop ''Ořechovská'', to the shopping center (''obchodni centrum'') Futurum. Once you are at at the shopping center Futurum, you will find a Tesco gas station, but most of the people there are just staying in town. From here you can walk couple of kilometres or use tram 2 to second spot.

==== Second option ====
Take a tram 2 to the stop "Modřice, Tyršova". And walk little bit back near the Unicorn petrol station. Cars are going very fast here, however, and don't have much room to stop, so you might try alternating between thumbing on the road and asking drivers who stop at the station.

==== Third option ====
There is a nice spot for hitchhiking just next to the tram 2 stop "Ústřední hřbitov" where you can hitch south to Vienna or just to the next petrol station. When you get off the tram just go on the main street and then turn right 100m and you will find a nice place to stop cars. Keep in mind that this spot is not on the main road so there's a litle smaller trafic.

=== Northeast towards [[Prostějov]], [[Olomouc]], [[Ostrava]] {{Dcz|1}}{{E|462}}
+ east towards [[Kroměříž]], [[Zlín]] {{Motorway Number Czech Republic|1}}
+ east towards [[Uherské Hradiště]], [[Trenčín]] {{Ncz|50}}{{E|50}} ===

==== First option ====
Take tram number 8 to station "Krásného", from the station go to the overbridge. To Olomouc you will stay over head 30 minutes.

==== Second option ====
Take the trolleybus number 33 from the railway station (Hlavní nádraží) to the station "Langrova" (it takes 13 minutes). Cross the street and go up the street Slavkovská, after two minutes you come to a main road which you also cross and continue on a footpath straight for another 50 meters to a petrol station which already lies on a highway.

==== Third option ====

Best spot (for D1 only): From the stop Úzká (next to the big Tesco close to train station) or bus station "Zvonařka" take bus 602 or 702 to "Jiříkovice, motorest Rohlenka" (about 20min). Cross the street and you are at a huge petrol station (with KFC, McD, etc.) which is outside of Brno right at D1. Lot of drivers to Olomouc and Ostrava.

Alternatively if you don't want to take a bus to Rohlenka, you can get there by one more car hichthiking as well. Take a bus 33 from Hlavní nádraží (train station) and go to stop "Slatina sídliště" (terminal). Go right and you will see a roundabout 50 m ahead. If you cross it straight and hitchhike there, you'll get to Rohlenka in 15 minutes without paying the bus. (good choice if you have already ticket for Brno public transport)

==== Fourth option ====
'''Good for Uherské Hradiště.''' Take a bus 33 from Hlavní nádraží (train station) and go to stop "Slatina sídliště" (terminal). Go right and you will see a roundabout 50 m ahead. Cross it straight and hitchhike there. Usually you get first car to Slavkov u Brna and then second car to Uherské Hradiště or further.

=== North towards [[Pardubice]], [[Hradec Králové]] {{Dcz|43}}{{E|461}} ===
There are several good spots and hitchhiking is easy in every village/town on the way.

==== First option ====
Take tram 12 to the stop "Červinkova" and go 200 m to the left. Just before the bridge get down to the highway. Almost everywhere there is good shoulder for cars to stop or another 200 m behind is Shell petrol station.

==== Second option ====
By buses 41 and 42 get to the shopping centre Globus (bus stop "Ivanovice, Globus"). There you can hitchhike just after roundabout or up at the main road.

==== Other options ====
At the highway near tram 6 terminal station "Kr. Pole, nádraží".

At the highway connection near tram 1 stop "Tylova".

Both spots are probably better than Second option spot. [http://hitchwiki.org/en/index.php?title=Brno&action=edit&section=11 Add more specific info please]
'''Prague''' (''Praha'') is the capital of the [[Czech Republic]].

Writing a sign "PHA" clearly informs a driver that you are going to Prague, but a sign '''PRAHA''' works better.

== Hitching out ==

=== East towards [[Hradec Králové]], [[Pardubice]], [[Wrocław]] {{Dcz|11}}{{E|67}} ===

From "Černý most", the last station of the B (yello) line of the metro, take a bus to the stop "Na Kovárně" (221, 303, 304, 344, 353, 398), it is about a 10-minute ride and probably you are going to a few euro, but not much. A hundred metres after the stop turn right and go along Tlustého street, after last house keep the right (bigger) road, then left before the cemetery. Go across the bridge to the petrol station. The walk is about 1.5 km total. There usually isn't very much traffic, but waiting times are likely to be short. If you get lost ask anyone about "Hummer Garden" (the place only for Hummers) which is just behind the station.

==== Second option ====

A possibly better choice is the K+R place near "Černý Most" metro station, which is popular with hitchhikers. Use a sign "HK" (Hradec Králové) or "PL" (if going to Náchod and Poland). It's necessary to use a sign, because the road splits in many directions.

Disadvantage is that there are only cars traveling out of Prague - not those going from Prague ring road. But there is no non-freeway solution to get a lift on those cars.

=== Northeast towards [[Mladá Boleslav]], [[Liberec]], [[Görlitz]] {{Dcz|10}}{{E|65}} ===
[[File:Stop_hk.jpg|thumb|right|350px|Dj-bobr at the beginning of D11 Highway.]]

You can hitch from a petrol station on the E65. Take the metro line B (yellow) to the last station, ''Černý Most''. From there catch bus number 220 to the stop ''Do Čertous''. When you get off the bus, the petrol station is behind the big orange building with "H1" on it.

==== Second option ====

Another option is to use the K+R place near "Černý Most" metro station (the same for going to Hradec Králové); lots of hitchhikers use this place. Use a sign "MB" (Mladá Boleslav), "LB" (Liberec). It's necessary to use a sign, because the road splits in many directions. Because of building of Prague Ring (R1) sub-parts, long-distance traffic is lower each day, but this spot is still usable.

=== North, Northwest towards [[Ústí nad Labem]], [[Teplice]], [[Dresden]], [[Berlin]] {{Dcz|8}}{{E|55}}===
'''Warning''': If you are passing through Dresden, take a look at the [[Dresden]] hitchwiki page. From either of the spots you can take rides to OMV petrol station before Lovosice or to the Agip petrol station after Ústí nad Labem. The hitchhiking positions there are also good.

==== First option ====
Get to the metro station "Holešovice" (red line C) and take bus 201 to station "Vychovatelna" (3 stations). You will find a great spot with lots of traffic going still slow right at the bus station. Another option is to get to metro terminal station "Letňany" (red line C) take any bus or walk 500 m to the bus stop "Výstaviště Letňany". Behind bus stop at the crossroad turn left to the footway and after 300 m turn right to the small footpath going straight to the petrol station. The turn is just before the bridge over the highway.

==== Second option ====
First bigger petrol station (OMV) at D8. From metro terminal station ”Letňany” (red line C) take bus (195, 140, 158, 110, 269) to the stop “Obchodní centrum Čakovice”. Turn back (from bus direction), cross the roundabout and walk still straight another 800 m until you'll see the highway and petrol station will be on your left.

=== West towards [[Plzeň]], [[Klatovy]], [[Nürnberg]], [[München]] {{Dcz|5}}{{E|50}}===
Most of drivers goes directly to Pilsen. But getting a lift to Germany or even further is not unusual. All petrol stations at {{Dcz|5}} are fine for hitchhiking although often with little traffic.

==== First option ====
Take metro B (yellow line) to "Hůrka", walk around Albert shop, upstairs and over small bridge. Walk around the school maintaining the same direction. You will see a wall that hides the road we need to take, so go behind it. There is a bus stop and a big road. Cross it and continue right to the crossroads, there go left. You will see signs "Plzeň". Go over the bridge and down to the left. After the turn there is great place for hitchhiking. Alight, long and lot of space to stop. Although it's not allowed to stay there, police don't make troubles there.

==== Second option ====
First petrol station behind Prague on {{Dcz|5}} Fairly big one with McD's and enough cars. From metro "Zličín" (line B, yellow), take a bus 307, 308, 311, 380 or 602 to "Rudná, škola" stop. The ticket costs 18 Kč (~eur 0.66; 1 zone out of Prague). Once you get off, walk couple of meters in the direction the bus came from and turn left onto a street called "Na Přídělu". You should see the petrol station in the distance. Walk to the end of the street, there will be a footpath towards the petrol station. You need the opposite direction so get to the other side of motorway by the tunnel at the end of closer petrol station. It's a 5-10 minutes walk in total.

==== Third option ====
From metro terminal station "Zličín" (yellow line B) go under the road and immediately left. Continue along the road for 150 m to crossroad with traffic lights. You can stand right on the triangle, down at the highway (police can kick you out) or ask people at the nearby petrol station, KFC or parking lots. None of the places is good (1st and 2nd option are recommended).

=== Southeast towards [[Brno]], [[Ostrava]], [[Bratislava]], [[Vienna]], [[Kraków]] {{Dcz|1}}{{E|50}}{{E|59}}{{E|65}}
+ south towards [[České Budějovice]], [[Linz]] {{Dcz|3}}{{E|55}} ===
It's good to have a sign at this road and definitely for south direction. Every bigger petrol station at [[D1 (CZ)|D1]] is good for hitchhiking.
==== First option ====
Easily reachable petrol station, not a lot of traffic though. Good in bad-weather or snow conditions. Go to the metro station "Chodov" (red line C), there is big shopping centre, try to not get lost there and find the road "Roztylská" going through it. Go to the traffic lights at the end of this tunnel and continue by following cyclopath - yellow signs with "Záběhlice" and/or "Chodovec" written. After 700 m you will get to the bridge over the motorway. Use the staircase at the beggining of the bridge to get down to the petrol station.

Alternatively you can stay behind the station exit at the end of left lane, at the left side of the road.

==== Second option ====
From metro station "Opatov" (red line C) follow the main road up. Walk along the road about 5 minutes, keep going over the crossroad and the bridge over the motorway. Now you might see other hitchhikers on the slip-road. Alternatively, you can take bus number 177 from metro "Opatov" to next (request) stop "U Dálnice". Be careful and stay on the slip road, not on the motorway (sometimes police passes by).

Very common spot, not so good in fact. Average waiting time is less than one hour. If you stuck there, you can walk 2 km to the spot 4 (again, if police goes around, they'll tell you to walk on the field beside motorway).

==== Third option ====
Especially good option at night when there is little traffic at spots 1 and 2. At the end of bus stop opposite to metro station "Kačerov" (red line C), find stairs going down. You will go over train tracks, stairs down again, then around metro tracks and turn right before the motorway. You will see OMV petrol station but just cross the grass strip and 2 lanes leading to the station and stay at the shoulder at the beggining of motorway (there is sign). Police doesn't make troubles there and for cars it means end of 50 kmph limit, so they're still quite slow. The shoulder is wide, safe and alight.

There are not many cars at that petrol station behind or they have different directions (often [[Pilsen]]).

==== Fourth option ====
[[File:ujezdupruhonicprague.jpg|thumb|right|250px|Hitchhikers at Újezd u Průhonic petrol station. Regular local hitchhikers were around, as well as hitchhikers doing the race.]]

First motorway petrol station behind Prague, really good hitchhiking but takes extra time to get there.
From metro "Opatov" (red line C) exit straight out of the station and take a left following the winding red ramp up to street level/the road above. Look on the bus stop timetables (bus stop next to the Replay shop) for the stop "K Sukovu" on route 363, the buses leave every 15-30 minutes. You have to show valid ticket or buy one from driver!

Get to "K Sukovu" (takes roughly 10 minutes) – you'll know you're there when you see the petrol station in the distance to your right after getting off the bus. Follow the main road in bus direction and after 400 m go over motorway bridge and down to the petrol station on your right.

==== Fifth option ====
Quite near city centre, cars are slow, high traffic density and nobody expect hitchhikers there but you can be lucky. At metro station "Vyšehrad" (red line C) get to the right side of the main road - one is leading to the huge bridge and city centre, opposite is yours - and use the sidewalk for about 300 m. After the small bridge, continue left to the main road and hitchhike. There are 3 lanes and one parking lane and ussualy some place to stop.

==== Sixth option ====
Go up from metro station "Roztyly" (red line C) and cross all the parking places to the motorway. Hard shoulder there is good and alight at night but it's not allowed to stay there. And cars are already a bit fast.

=== South towards [[Příbram]], [[Písek]], [[České Budějovice]] {{Dcz|4}} ===

From Smíchovské nádraží (subway line B) take bus 129, 241, 243, 244, 314 or 318 to the stop Malá Chuchle. It's a request stop so press the button. There you can easily hitchhike. Usually very short waiting on Friday afternoons when many people go out from Prague.

=== West towards [[Karlovy Vary]], [[Cheb]] {{Dcz|6}}{{E|48}} ===
This is good option for Karlovy Vary direction. Take tram 22 to Bílá Hora. Go straight in the street Karlovarská and there is quite good place to hitch-hike behind the red-white banister.

==== Second option ====
If you want to start a bit further outside, take a train (www.idos.cz) from ''Prague Masarykovo Station'', to ''Jeneč'', which 15 km outside and very close to Prague Airport. Just 200 m from ''Jeneč'' train station - on the other side of the train tracks - is a motorway junction from which it is pretty easy to get to [[Karlovy Vary]].

==== Third option ====
If you prefer petrol stations, try this option. The first one is quite far though (30 km from Prague center) - take a bus from Praha-Hradčanská (Metro ''Dejvická'') to ''Velká Dobrá, u skoly''. Once there follow the direction of the bus and turn first left (Unhošťská street), than second right (Lesní street) and after 200 m you should see the highway and the petrol station on your right.

=== Northwest towards [[Kladno]], [[Chomutov]], [[Chemnitz]] {{Dcz|7}} ===
From Dejvická (subway line A) take bus 119 to Dědina. There you can hitchhike. You can also try another bus stop on Evropská road e.g. Divoká Šárka but probably further is better.

== Public transport ==
Public transport network in Prague is really good, you can get in reasonable time almost anywhere at any time. Ticket costs: 30 minutes - 24 Kč (eur 1), 90 minutes - 32 Kč (~eur 1.30). If you plan to stay longer, you can buy a ticket for one day - 110 Kč (~eur 4.50) or three days - 310 Kč (~eur 12.60). You have to validate ticket when entering metro station, tram or bus. The fine for fare dodging is 800 Kč (~eur 32) if you pay it at that place or till15 days.

Blackriding in the subway is not advised, as ticket inspectors are more common than in years past. They will ask you to show a passport, and if you refuse, they are very likely to take you to the police, who can demand immediate payment before they will let you go.

At metro stations you can find maps of Prague with public transport, this can be useful, because the lines are changing (especially bus lines). You can easily find a connection online at [http://jizdnirady.idnes.cz/pid/spojeni/?lng=E IDOS] - works for the entire CR or alternatively for Prague only: [http://spojeni.dpp.cz/ConnForm.aspx?cl=E5 DPP].

Until the end of 2015, there is starting coupon for Uber smartphone app (similar to taxi) in Prague valued 300 CZK for the first ride. Ride costs 20 CZK entering fee, 4 CZK/min and 10CZK/min for Uber Pop (cheaper option). 300 CZK is enough for short or middle distance rides. You have to enter coupon code '''CESTUJLEVNE''' before taking ride. Only downside is that you have to have internet connection and enter your credit/debit card details. You can then cancel your Uber account sending email to their tech support. (Tested in June 2015, after finishing ride across entire city smartphone showed 0 CZK price.)
'''Plzeň''' (Pilsen) with around 170.000 inhabitants is 4th biggest city in [[Czech Republic]]. It is located about 90 km west of [[Prague]] on the way to [[Germany]]. There are good spots for hitchhiking in every direction.

== Hitchhiking out ==
=== Northeast towards [[Praha]] {{Dcz|5}}{{E|50}} ===
There are lot of possible spots for Prague (use sign "Praha" or "PHA"). Starting from Option 1 you can use any bus stop on the street till Option 2. There are enough cars to Prague all day and night long. Alternatively you can also use other highway-links; roads in direction of [[Klatovy]] or [[České Budějovice]].
{{Spot
|title = Option 1: Breweries
|mapID = 7688
|description = Find main breweries (Gambrinus and Pilsner Urquell), they are at the main road to the highway to Prague. Walk until you see big crossroads and just behind it is great spot. You can also use trolley-buses 11, 15, 16, 17 and get of at station "Šumavská" or trolley-bus 13/bus 28 to station "U prazdroje" and continue to that crossroads by following the trolleys. }}
{{Spot
|title = Option 2.1: Tesco trolleybus-stop
|mapID = 16934
|description = Terminus station of trolley-bus 11 - "Ústřední hřbitov". From the city you can also use free Tesco buses T1 and T2 which are going above Tesco. You have to walk down to the main road and little bit left to the bus-stop. This is good place with slow traffic and enough room to stop. }}
{{Spot
|title = Option 2.2: Behind Tesco
|mapID = 5639
|description = Walk behind Tesco, stay at the beginning of the petrol station turn-out lane or ask at the station. }}

==== Going through/around [[Prague]] ====
It's definitely possible to hitchhike through Prague in major directions. It can take 1-2 hours but searching way with public transport can be as slow and complicated if you don't know Prague. Try to stick to petrol stations at "Jižní spojka" (southern connection) and hop from one to the other.

From [[D5_(CZ)|D5]] to [[D1_(CZ)|D1]] (direction [[Brno]]) you can use Prague ring road, get off at last petrol station at D5 called Rudná and hitchhike there with D1 or Brno sign.

=== West towards [[Cheb]], [[Nürnberg]], [[Regensburg]] {{Dcz|5}}{{E|50}} or [[Domažlice]], [[Cham]] {{Ncz|26}} ===
{{Spot
|title = Option 1: Škoda VII. brána
|mapID =
|description = In the city centre there are pretty good maps showing the way out, but for example from náměstí Republiky keep walking Solní (Palackého náměstí – Přemyslova – Skvrňanská – and finally Domažlická) about 1,5 km until you see a bus stop (Škoda VII. brána - trolley-bus 12) that is just before a railroad crossing. You can hitchhike either from the bus stop or the empty area between the stop and the raidroad. This spot is ok, but you'll probably find better ones by taking a bus a bit forward down the road 26. }}
{{Spot
|title = Option 2: Nová Hospoda
|mapID = 10022
|description = It's quite long walk from city. But from terminus of trolley-buses 12, 15, 17 "Nová Hospoda" (be careful not every of them ends there) go little bit back to the main road, continue right (there is bus stop) several hundred meters to the new big road. You will see small green bridge for cyclists over it and behind is the ramp. You'll find your place there. Even though cars go faster in 2 lanes and little bit in turn it's good spot. There are lot of prostitutes around, show your backpack!

Less than 1 km behind this spot is petrol station. There are more prostitutes and their customers than cars going for petrol. But you can find truck for long distance. Another 1 km behind is highway D5. Hitchhiking there is possible also. }}
{{Spot
|title = Option 3: Zátiší
|mapID = 23307
|description = Take trolley-bus 12 to the stop "Zátiší". Half of them end there, half continue to "Nová hospoda". You can hitch at the bus stop or ask people at ONO petrol station where lot of people go for cheap petrol.}}

=== Southeast towards [[České Budějovice]], [[Linz]] {{Ncz|20}}{{E|49}} ===
{{Spot
|title = Option 1: K Dráze
|mapID = 18650
|description = From tram 2 terminus "Světovar" walk 1.5 km to the bus-stop "K Dráze". That's the best spot, don't walk further. Road to České Budějovice is full of villages with many good spots for hitchhiking. }}

=== Northwest towards [[Karlovy Vary]], [[Sokolov]] {{Ncz|20}}{{E|49}} ===
{{Spot
|title = Option 1: Severka
|mapID = 10588
|description = Take tram 4 in direction "Košutka", get out at "Severka". At the crossroads turn up, you can try luck there at the bus stop or continue by bus 30 to the Option 2. }}
{{Spot
|title = Option 2: Globus/Fire department
|mapID = 17590
|description = Take bus 30 to the terminus "Úněšovská, Globus". There find main road (roundabout is there), you can go little bit back to the city. There is fire department and nice place to hitchhike. Or you can hitch after the roundabout and get the people leaving the Globus mall, too. }}

=== South towards [[Klatovy]], [[Deggendorf]] {{Ncz|27}}{{E|53}} ===
{{Spot
|title = Option 1:
|mapID = 14852
|description = From "Bory" (terminus of tram 4; buses 21, 23, 24, 26, 30, 32, 36) look in direction of tram tracks and walk left (street Kaplířova, there should be signs Prague and Klatovy). After 900 m before the small petrol station turn right under the bridge. There is good ramp for hitchhiking. }}
{{Spot
|title = Option 2: Bory (old spot)
|mapID = 5638
|description = From tram no. 4 terminus "Bory" cross the road and there is long bus stop. This spot is still usable but waiting times are longer and longer. Most of people go to the nearby dam or to Plzeň-Litice. }}

=== North towards [[Most]], [[Chomutov]] {{Ncz|27}} ===
{{Spot
|title = Option 1: Bolevec
|mapID = 20387
|description = Take tram 1, go to the terminus "Bolevec", go little bit back to main road and hitchhike at bus stop behind traffic lights. }}

== Hitchhiking in ==
=== By highway from any direction {{Dcz|5}}{{E|50}} ===
Get off at the exit "Plzeň - Černice", Olympia shopping centre is there. Be careful and go from the highway near the shopping centre, you will see bus stop. Trolley-buses no. 13 not really often go to the city centre. Walking is also possible but city is not near, watch signs "Slovany".

If your driver is willing to take you more into the city s/he can use exit 89 and 2 km from the highway is big roundabout and lot of buses to various parts of Pilsen. Another option is exit 80 where it's 2 km to tram 4 terminus "Bory" and exit 73 where it's about 2 km to tram 2 terminus "Světovar".

Many drivers will offer you to go trough Pilsen, it's not that much longer for them and it can save you lot of time

== Public transport ==
City transport is very good in the whole city, even at night. You can get a free map in the city information centre at Náměstí Republiky (main square). For timetables, maps, prices and more information see [http://www.pmdp.eu/ www.pmdp.eu]. Basic tariff prices are in the table bellow.
'''Brussels''' ([[France|French]]: ''Bruxelles'', [[Netherlands|Dutch]]: ''Brussel'', [[Germany|German]] ''Brüssel'', [[Poland|Polish]]: ''Bruksela'', [[Latvia]]n: ''Brisele'') is the capital of [[Belgium]] and the [[Europe]]an capital. Brussels is a very international city. While still walking around in the center you might be able to spot some cars from other countries. For instance, when heading to [[Paris]], check the French numberplates with 75 or 90-something (Paris and its suburbs).

== Hitchhiking out ==

=== North-West towards [[Gent]], also to [[Lille]]===
Let people take you to the Basiliek of Koekelberg. Then ask them the direction for the motorway. They'll indicate you to the back of the Basiliek of Koekelberg = Keizer Karel laan. Hike for 1,4 km till on your right the Baselix Shopping Center, where you'll find 2 petrol stations. Stay there as people fill up with petrol for going to e.g. [[Gent]] or [[Bruges|Brugge]].
Just ask people.. won't take you more than 10 minutes to get a hike.

Take tram 82 from the South Station in direction of 'Berchem' until the stop 'Berchem Shopping'. From there turn left and walk up the Av. Charles Quint for about 200 meters and you are at the beginning of the E40 in direction of Gent. Just hitch after the traffic lights, where there is an area for a car to pull aside behind you. The circulation is dense but cars can easily pull aside and get back on the road quite safely. This spot was last successfully used on August 22nd, 2010.

There are two services along the E40 between Brussels and Gent that you can always manage to reach:
# 'Groot Bijgaarden' is about 2.5km from the spot you are standing
# 'Wetteren' is some 34km from Brussels and about 15km from the center of Gent

Many people also take this route to go to [[Lille]] and [[Paris]], and there's probably more traffic on this road than on the option going towards Charleroi and Mons.

=== South-West towards [[Charleroi]], [[Mons (Bergen)|Mons]], [[Lille]], [[Paris]] (E19) ===

As cars need to wait to turn left, its possible to ask drivers to take you south, or to the [http://goo.gl/maps/fBvgQ=next petrol station on the motorway], which is 1.5 km further.

To get to this spot, take tram 4 ([http://m.stib.be/line.php?lang=fr&line=4&iti=1 STIB]) till the terminus ([http://maps.google.be/maps?q=stalle+prolongee&hl=nl&ll=50.795375,4.318566&spn=0.000895,0.001725&sll=50.792373,4.316597&sspn=0.045358,0.110378&t=h&hnear=Verlengde+Stallestraat,+Vlaams-Brabant&z=19 Stalle]), then walk further towards the motorway along the big road (with some massive shops) till you'll reach the Motorway bridge.

[[Dante]] tried this spot a number of times, and often, within less then half an hour, gets to talk directly to drivers with French number plates going towards Paris.

[[abyssin]] prefers to leave tram 4 at stop Egide van Ophem. Then you just need to cross the street and you’ll find yourself on a DATS 24 petrol station. Depending on the time of the day (best is around evening rush hour, as people are leaving Brussels), it can be easy or very easy to get a ride to the rest area of Ruisbroek (Total petrol station). Make sure to state very clearly where you want to go (Ruisbroek petrol station on the “ring”) as many people go through it without knowing, for example if their destination is Waterloo.

==== CERIA/COOVI ====

Another option to take metro yellow line '''5''' (direction '''Érasme/Erasmus''') and get off at '''CERIA/COOVI'''. Walk Chaussée de Mons/Bergensesteenweg down south (you can ask people the direction of Ikea). Some 150 meters from the metro station you will see a bridge. Go down across the bridge, there you will see entrance (consisting of 3 lanes from 3 different directions) to the motorway in direction of Mons/Paris. 5 km further there will be a big '''Total''' gas station called '''Ruisbroek''', there you will easily find a ride further to the south.

==== Gilson ====

Another option to take bus '''50''' (direction '''Lot''' station) to '''Gilson''' from Brussels '''gare du Midi/Zuidstation'''. This takes about 20 minutes. From here you can easily follow the road, alongside the massive shopping area, to the highway. You will find yourself at the motorway exits with traffic lights in five minutes.

==== Internationalelaan/Boulevard International ====

Another option to go to the Internationalelaan/Boulevard International close to the motorway entrance. There is a lot of traffic and much space for cars to stop, even a [[petrol station hitchhiking|petrol station]] where you could ask people directly. To get there, take bus '''78''' from the '''South Train Station/gare du Midi''' in direction of '''Humanité''' and get out at the stop '''Bollinckx'''. Attention! The bus only runs every hour. [http://www.stib.be/horaires-dienstregeling.html?l=fr Schedule]
Keep in mind that you are now in the middle of an industrial zone!

==== Delta (South-East) ====

Although '''Delta''' is mostly known as the best spot to get to Louvain-la-Neuve then Namur and Luxembourg along the E411, it can very well be suited to get on the E19 (Nivelles, Charleroi or Mons, then Paris, or even Lille). [[abyssin]] successfully hitchhiked from there 10+ times. If used properly, this option beats Drogenbos in many cases. Using a sign on this spot is mandatory as drivers are used to see hitchhikers going to Louvain-la-Neuve (E411 rather than E19). After several trials, “'''Nivelles'''” proves to be the best thing to write on your sign (this is important). Unless your driver goes further, which is often the case, ask to be dropped at rest area of Nivelles 30 minutes from Brussels (the one with the Total petrol station and a restaurant that is built across the highway).

The spot has direct access from the '''exit no. 4 of metro station Delta on line 5''' (15 minutes ride from the city center).

VUB and ULB students or hitchhikers leaving from Ixelles have a reason to prefer this option as it will save them time compared to reaching Stalle stop (Drogenbos) by tram 4.

Alternatively, you can ask drivers directly at the petrol station Lukoil (30 minutes on average). On the contrary, Texaco petrol station’s staff, on boulevard du Triomphe, has proven to be very unfriendly to hitchhikers once, threatening to call the cops.

===== Cardboard around Delta hitchhiking spot =====

There’s a Delhaize shop inside the metro station, easily accessible from exit 4 of metro station right from the hitchhiking spot (a stair going down to picnic tables). Also the staff of Lukoil petrol station across the intersection is nice and helpful.

==== Alternative destinations along the E19 ====
* [[Halle (Belgium)|Halle]], to eventually join the E429 to [[Tournai]] or [[Lille]].
* [[Nivelles]], at the junction with the E420 to [[Charleroi]] and the N25 to [[Louvain-la-Neuve]].
* [[La Louvière]], junction with the E42 eastward.
* [[Valenciennes]] at junction with the A23 to [[Lille]].

=== South towards [[Louvain-la-Neuve]], [[Namur]], [[Luxembourg]], [[Lyon]], [[Strasbourg|Strasbourg]], [[Geneve]] (E411) ===

The E411 to Luxembourg is a recommended direction to head further South. This option should probably also be considered to go the South if you want to avoid [[Paris]]. Because petrol is a lot cheaper in Luxembourg you can easily find long rides at the gas station in Luxembourg before the border.

The E411 heads direction South to [[Namur]], [[Luxembourg]], [[Lorraine]] in [[France]] and in [[Germany]]. Many junctions, such as the southern ring near Jezus-Eik, connect to the E19 (towards [[Charleroi]], [[Mons (Bergen)|Mons]] and [[Paris]]) or the E42 just north of [[Namur]]. Using a sign would ease the journey but remember that these junctions are on the motorway and are not safe to hitchhike from.

==== Delta ====

One of the historically well-known places by local hitchhikers, '''Delta''' is on the way towards [[Louvain-La-Neuve]] (student town) and is situated right '''at the exit no. 4 of metro station Delta''' (15 minutes from the center), next to the Delta bus depot. To get there, take '''metro line 5''' direction '''Herrmann-Debroux''', or '''bus 71 to Delta'''. It takes a minute or two before a car stops, and it is common to bump into one or two other (student) hitchhikers there. There's a petrol station (Lukoil) next to the metro station where you won't wait more than five minutes on a Sunday morning if you say you're a student.

Historical note: as [[Louvain-la-Neuve]] is a student town, and Delta is at the entrance of the motorway and next to the VUB/ULB (Brussels university), many students used to hitchhike that route.

====Station Beaulieu in Ixelles====

To get to metro station '''Beaulieu''' in Ixelles, take '''line 5 direction Herrmann-Debroux'''. You will notice many cars stopping at traffic lights just before the station. This road connects with the motorway towards the South. Some hitchhiker got a lift in less than 2 minutes. There is a big service station 10 minutes down the road if needed for further lifts.

=== South towards [[Waterloo]] (local hitching) ===
Public transport to the site of [[Waterloo]] battlefield are deficient, so hitchhiking could be a solution for those who wish to do a day excursion to that historic site. The best is to reach 'Ter Cameren Bos' (Bois de la Cambre) at the border between Ixelles and Ukkel [http://maps.google.be/?ie=UTF8&ll=50.811928,4.368154&spn=0.000717,0.001725&t=h&z=19 (Tram 94 - 23 - 24) and find a spot along the Chaussee de Waterloo] or by taking [http://maps.google.be/?ie=UTF8&ll=50.789497,4.374205&spn=0.000717,0.001725&t=h&z=19 Tram 92 till "Fort Jaco" terminus], and then walk to adjacent Chaussee de Waterloo to hh further south.

=== North or East, towards [[Leuven]], [[Antwerpen|Antwerp]], [[Liège|Liege]], [[Germany]], [[Netherlands]] (E40 - E314) ===
You can easily hitch out of Brussels in direction East from the European / Business Quarter.

* The first option is to hitch at the entrance of the Tunnel located at the gate of the Jubelpark (Parc du Cinquentenaire) on the Blijde-Inkomst laan (Avenue de la Joyeuse-Entree) on the side of the 'Rond-Point Schuman' (metro access 1A/1B direction Herrmann-Debroux/Stokkel). There is a street light and a side parking just at the entrance of the tunnel, you may simply stand by the light with a sign and the cars can immediately pull over to pick you. This hitching point is an easy start to go to [[Leuven]] or [[Liège|Liege]] or possibly reach the services in Leuven on the E40 or on the E314.

''(Note: this spot works perfectly during business hours, but the traffic is low on Sundays or during holidays; note that it is also possible to catch a ride in direction North [[Antwerpen|Antwerp]] from there too but a sign is required)''

* Another, second, good option is to hitch at the red lights on the [http://maps.google.be/maps?f=q&hl=nl&geocode=&q=rue+du+belliard+10+,+bruxelles&sll=50.84508,4.369297&sspn=0.010351,0.026608&ie=UTF8&ll=50.844945,4.368825&spn=0.010704,0.026608&z=15&iwloc=addr Rue du Belliard]. It's a one way street with 4 lanes and most cars enter the Tunnel at the end of the street that goes onto the motorway towards [[Leuven]], [[Liège|Liege]] and [[Aachen]]. Make sure to ask your driver they go onto the motorway and go towards [[Leuven]]. The first petrol station on the motorway is right after the exit to [[Leuven]]. If your driver goes to [[Leuven]] he can miss hes turn and still go to the town through the petrol station. Nearby public transportation to this second hitch spot are Metro station "Trone/Troon" and also several bus lines.

* A third option is to go to Metro Station "Diamant". You can get there by getting the metro to Schuman (Direction 1/5 Stockel/Hermann-Debroux), then bus 79 (direction Kraainem). Cross "Bld. Auguste Reyers" in east direction. Then walk to the spot on the small street, just after the traffic lights, that leads to the A3-motorway. There is plenty of space for cars to pull over.

=== North towards [[Antwerpen|Antwerp]], [[Breda]], [[Rotterdam]], [[Utrecht]], [[Amsterdam]] ===
There is no direct easy way to hitch from Brussels to [[Antwerpen|Antwerp]], although there is some alternative means to reach the ring in the hope to catch a ride along the E19 or the A12. Sadly those are always in periphery of the city. You can take the main motorway E19 or the A12 that may be less good if you also want to hitch further North.

If you don't have any luck with finding a spot to stand you can try your chances at Brussels Airport. You can take bus 21 to the airport and then go to the "Départ" area. Go outside and you will see a lot of cars drive by and drop off people who are catching a plane. When you walk a bit into the direction where the cars are going to (it's one-way traffic) you will find a good spot where you can stand and where cars can stop for you. Use a sign, because probably most cars will move into Brussels and only a few will go to Antwerpen. This road will lead to the highway and also to the petrol station that is described at the section on Brussels Airport.

==== NATO ====
The [http://maps.google.com/?q=nato,+brussels&ie=UTF8&hq=nato,&hnear=Brussels,+Belgium&ll=50.877674,4.42263&spn=0.004008,0.009645&z=17&iwloc=lyrftr:m,0x47c3dcd1ea2536c7:0xe8a6c0992aa12ff7,50.877511,4.421042 bus stop in front of the NATO] is pretty good for hitchhiking further than Antwerp, although there is more traffic at the parallel traffic lights. For hitchhiking to Holland, make a sign for the Antwerp/E19 and get off at the petrol station just before Antwerp: lots of Dutch cars / people here to ask for a ride. If someone takes you to Mechelen though, make sure they drop you of at Mechelen Noord motorway exit. Buses 12, 21 and 65 go to the Nato stop. You can get the number 65 from the Madou metro stop.

==== Airport ====
Take an overpriced train or for a more normal price bus 12 or 21 to Brussels International Airport. There are many exits at the airport. You can find one and start hitching from where cars pay their parking-ticket. A bit further down the road towards the motorway you'll find a Shell service station. Most cars here stay around the airport, but you may have luck. A final suggestion is to keep on walking along the side-road until it joins with the motorway. Cars go relatively slow here and there is plenty of room for a vehicle to pull over.

==== Antwerpsebaan ====
Take tram #3, #19 or #23 and get off at ''De Wand'' or ''Esplanade'' (#4). Walk along the Avenue de Meysse up to the Antwerpselaan, crossing the Romeinsesteenweg. You can hitch along the Antwerpselaan and catch a car that would get onto the motorway at exit #2 of the A12.

You can also take the tram till Terminus "Esplanade". Go to your right and take the "Avenue de Meysse" up to the "Antwerpselaan". You should be going slightly downhill. Indeed, cross the Romeinsesteenweg. By now you should see the signs for Antwerp. Keep following the sings since a couple roads join further on. This will increase your chances.

==== Notre Dame Cathedral / Laeken ====
A relatively good spot in the North-West of Brussels can be found around the corner of Parvis Notre Dame, the Cathedral of Laeken. You can reach this by metro L6 towards Koning Boudewijn and get off at Bockstael Metro station. Turn left when you exit and go through Rue Leopold I, or just follow the pedestrian street-signs for the Cathedral. Tram 94 also apparantly stops close to the cathedral (not confirmed). [http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=bockstael&sll=50.879901,4.358912&sspn=0.006025,0.013797&ie=UTF8&ll=50.878632,4.356237&spn=0.000753,0.001725&t=h&z=19 map].

If your driver is not heading to your destination but goes to the ring, you can get out where the A12 starts. You will find some small spots around the roundabout that should work. [http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=bockstael&sll=50.879901,4.358912&sspn=0.006025,0.013797&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Bockstael,+Fransmanstraat,+Laken+1020+Brussel,+Brussel+Hoofdstedelijk+Gewest,+Belgium&ll=50.894358,4.357474&spn=0.006118,0.011952&z=16 map]

== Hitching in ==
If you do not encounter a driver that goes inside the city, but takes the Northern Ring around the city, you can ask them to pull off the motorway (E40) at '''Exit #7a/7b''' ''(Chaussee Romaine/Parc des Expositions/Tentoonstellingspark)'' (basically, the Atomium and Heysel Stadium area) or at '''Exit #8''' ''(Wemmel)''. At both exits drivers can immediately rejoin the motorway at the sliproad opposite the exit.

From there, you simply have to walk towards the Expo park to join the Tram (23 - 81 - 94) or Metro (1A) stations at 'Koning Boudewijn' or 'Heysel'.

=== East ===
If you arrive from the East, you might also ask to be left at the Services along the E40 in [[Leuven]], before arriving in Brussels, with the mean of catching a local ride that would get into town. This might be necessary if your driver goes up along the E19 to [[Antwerpen|Antwerp]], as there won't be any places for him to drop you off.

=== West - South ===
If you arrive from the North-West ([[Gent]]), you can ask to be dropped at the Services in Groot-Bijgaarden which is 2.5km before the ring of Brussels along the E40.

If your ride only takes the Western Ring anyhow (from Gent or the south), you can ask to be left at the Exit 16 and gain the Metro 1b, stations 'Eddy Merckx' or 'Ceria' which are at footsteps.

=== South ===

If the driver goes to the East of Brussels, ask to be dropped at Delta.

If the driver goes the West of Brussels, ask to be dropped at Drogenbos exit. It comes right after the rest area (Total petrol station) of Ruisbroek. Walk five minutes and you’ll be at the beginning of tram line 4, which goes to the center.

== Public transport ==
Checks on the metro system are not common, but it can happen. Fines are over 100 euro for not carrying a ticket. You also need tickets to enter and exit at some metro stations. If you have a phone connected to the internet you can check for controls on the website [http://www.controlestib.be controlestib.be].

<noinclude>
This template can be used to produce an Infobox for human settlements (cities, towns, villages, communities) as well as other administrative districts, counties, provinces, etc.

== How to use this Template? ==
For using this template, copy&paste the following code to the '''top''' of the city article you want to edit. You can delete unused parameters. To better understand how to use it see description below or [[#Examples|examples]].

{{Infobox Location
|name =
|name_native =
|symbol =
|country =
|state =
|state_symbol =
|subdivision_type =
|subdivision_name =
|subdivision_symbol =
|region =
|region_symbol =
|subdivision2_type =
|subdivision2_name =
|subdivision2_symbol =
|map =
|pop =
|plate =
|roads =
|hitchbase =
|links =
}}

You have to specify in which ''country'' the location is. Other parameters are optional. You can use ''state'' and ''region''. For specifying different administrative divisions such a province, county etc. use parameters ''subdivision_type'' with ''subdivision name'' (considered smaller than ''state'' and bigger than ''region'') and ''subdivision2_type'' with ''subdivision2_name'' (considered smaller than region). All of the above parameters are used for page categorization and breadcrumb navigation so write them correctly and as a plain text. You don't have to use
<nowiki>[[Category:somearea]]</nowiki>
nor
<nowiki>{{IsIn|somearea}}</nowiki>
in a page itself. In fact it's better to delete them from a page if template works as intended.

Normally the heading of infobox is the same as pagename (which should be in English if possible). If for some reason you need to have different heading use ''name'' parameter. For location name in native language use parameter ''name_native'' - that will be showed somewhat smaller under main heading.

You can as well specify various symbols (flags, coat of arms) by parameters ''symbol'', ''state_symbol'', ''subdivision_symbol'', ''region_symbol'' and ''subdivision2_symbol''. Just find appropriate picture at wikimedia or upload it to hitchwiki and write its name e.g.
<nowiki>|state_symbol = Flag of Texas.svg</nowiki>

''map'' is in format like this:
<nowiki></nowiki>
;
''pop'' = population; ''plate'' = licence plate of the city/region; ''roads'' = major roads going around or through the city, you can write it as a plain text, links or use templates e.g. [[Template:E]];

''hitchbase'' = ID of the city at [http://hitchbase.com Hitchbase]; ''links'' = other links. Use last 2 parameters only if there is '''useful''' and '''english written''' information which is not already at hitchwiki.

== Troubleshooting ==
You can experiment with template functions at [[:Template:Infobox Location/sandbox]] and try to use it in [[Special:Mypage/sandbox|your sandbox]] or as a preview at any page. If you see somewhere somehow broken infobox, you can edit that page data (!) not this template. You can also write any ideas how to make it better to the [[{{TALKPAGENAME}}|talk page]].
== Hitching out ==
=== North to [[Halkida]], [[Lamia]], [[Thessaloniki]] {{E|75}} ===
Take the metro line 1, till the last station "Kifissia". From there, [https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=38.073600,23.808195&daddr=38.072389,23.811949&t=h&dirflg=w cross the park]. You'll find a busy bus stop, direction north, take the bus [http://www.oasa.gr/xpmap.php?id=p509&lang=en 509]

Get off the bus when it makes a U-turn, at "NEO TERMA", and [https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=38.1549,23.857&daddr=38.155,23.8559&t=h&dirflg=w walk 300m] to the parallel of the high-way. It's quite busy with drivers avoiding the toll station 3km away. You can either walk to that toll station, or wait for a short ride, who's gonna drop you 18km away at "Sirios" complex. To help you make your decision, drivers are in better mood after eating than after paying tolls.

Sirios includes a restaurant, a gas station and Jumbo store. If Sirios restaurant is empty at that time of the day, you can also catch a ride at the point where drivers who avoided the tolls are getting back into the high way. Half of the rides go to Halkida, and the other half go further North. Decline rides that don't go in your direction, they will only put you in a worse spot.

For a place to sleep before [[Thessaloniki]], there is a [http://hitchwiki.org/maps/?zoom=15&lat=40.33&lon=22.58 24 hour rest area/gas station] in Korinos and it's called [https://olympusplaza.gr Olympus plaza]. It includes a restaurant with free wifi and showers. 2 editors of the hitch-wiki can confirm that nobody will disturb you if you to sleep on the couches and workers of the restaurant might give food away.

=== West to the [[Peloponnesos]], [[Patra]] or [[Tripoli]] {{E|94}} ===
==== Option 1: Megara SEA ====
From metro Neratziotissa, take the suburban train to Kiato, and get down in Megara. The ticket costs EUR 3.
The controller always gets on the train in Nea Peramos, in the 1st or 5th (last) wagon. You can either

- go down in Nea Peramos and try to find a [https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=38.013363,23.414524&daddr=37.9964,23.364 short ride to Megara].

- stay in the 3rd wagon, and when you see the control approaching, go the opposite direction. If the train is full, the control might be slow and you might arrive in Megara before he reaches you. If he catches you without a ticket, you wont pay any fine, but just the EUR 3 ticket.

From the train platform of Megara, you can see the restaurant / petrol station. Cross the field, and find this [https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=37.992,23.362&daddr=37.995,23.364&t=k underground pass] There are not many cars stopping there, but you can get a long ride. The intersection to Patra or Tripoli is just 40km away, be sure to ask for the correct direction before accepting the ride.

==== Option 2: National Road 8 ====
* from Ag.Marina Metro Station (end of blue line) buses [http://www.oasa.gr/xpmap.php?id=pa16&lang=en A16] and [http://www.oasa.gr/xpmap.php?id=p876&lang=en 876].
* from Pireas Metro Station (end of green line), buses [http://www.oasa.gr/xpmap.php?id=p845&lang=en 845] and [http://www.oasa.gr/xpmap.php?id=p871&lang=en 871].

Get off at 1st Aerodromiou Stop or Levkes Stop. There you will see the connection with National Road 8 (N8).

==== Option 3: Harrys Truck-Stop ====
In the suburb of Aspropyrgos, in west Athens, there is a truck-stop well known and used by truck-drivers. There are many trucks from western and northern Europe which means that hitchers will have very good chances of getting a lift to the port-city of Patras and possibly even beyond into Europe.

The truck stop is at the 17th km of National Road Athens-Korinthos (Athinon-Korinthou). Ιt seems this is where Halivas Cement Company is.
It's a huge area and bus drivers and people know it. ''Not sure if you can say they know it. ** ''[[User:nerd-has-a-shirt|Val]] I asked around the area and nobodoy could help me out. I ended up hitching from an on ramp to the highway which worked just fine as well''
http://www.eurotruckstops.com/city/harrys-truckstop-athens/

==== Option 4 : Eleusina Toll Station ====
With the same buses of option 2, you get off at Platia Elefsinas and [https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=ΠΛ.ΕΛΕΥΣΙΝΑΣ+@38.043151,23.542327&daddr=38.042,23.495 walk 5.5km] to Eleusina Toll Station.

=== South to [[Sounio]] ===
Take the bus [http://www.oasa.gr/xpmap.php?id=pe22&lang=en E22] from Elliniko to Saronida, go down at the last stop, walk along the coast to get out of Saronida, and from there you can hitch-hike to Sounio.

== Public Transport ==
Tickets cost EUR 1.20 (full price) or EUR 0.60 (students) and are valid for 70min after first validation. As an act of solidarity, partially used tickets are left on the validating machines, escalators, etc. If you find one, take it. The time of first validation are the last 4 digits printed.

The public transport is almost not controlled, except the metro intersections (Syntagma, Omonia, Attiki, Monastiraki), where they hide behind the turns of the connecting corridors.

If they catch you without a ticket, give them your passport, but don't pay the fine. Till now, nobody saw their fines redirected to their countries.
'''Western Sahara''' is a mostly Moroccan-controlled territory in [[Northern Africa]]. Western Sahara has been on the United Nations list of non-self-governing territories since the 1960s when it was a Spanish colony.

When traveling here, you are de-facto traveling on the territory of the kingdom of [[Morocco]], so all visa-issues, police control checkpoints etc. are mostly applying to [[Morocco]]. Speaking a little bit of French, Spanish or Arabic will bring you through without problems, though more and more people speak good English due to the presence of the UN. Parts of the east (behind the berm) are controlled by the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polisario_Front Polisario Front].

=== Hitchhiking ===
Hitchhiking in Western Sahara is very easy along the coastal road N1, where traffic is plentiful as far down south as Dakhla but sometimes sparely as well. All over the territory, from big cities to the most sparsely location, people pop up to hitchhike as well, so the concept is well known and understood. It will be easy for you to catch rides all the way to [[Mauritania]]. Locals hitch rides with pointing the forefinger into the driving direction instead of using the thumb.

Hitchhiking the N14 to [[Smara]] shouldn't be a problem as well, but the other two main roads N3 and N5 can bring problems with them, due to the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Border_Wall_(Western_Sahara) berm] and partly Polisario-controlled areas. Traveling these roads should be taken with a lot of care and it's always best to collect information about the current situation. It can happen that Moroccan police will send you back and not let you through.

Also the whole territory is still covered partly with undiscovered landmines, so be extremely careful when leaving the main roads and walking into the desert.

Finding long rides can be especially easy with Westerners heading southwards towards [[Nouakchott]] and [[Senegal]] or [[Mali]] and can be done at Camping Moussafir in Dakhla and also Hotel Barbosa about 60 km from the border, where a lot of Moroccans and Westerners stop so that they can reach the border nice and early the next day. If you have made it to that spot chances are good that you have already come there with a Westerner; from [[Tiznit]] on resp. Nouakchott in the South, chances are really good to get a lift from an European.

Western Saharan border with [[Mauritania]] closes at 6 in the evening and is a good time for finding northbound rides. In the mornings, especially the cars lined up before 9, when the border opens, will have drivers out of the cars walking about, a good chance to ask for rides. Look for Senegalese people (Senegalese cars have blue license plates with two letters and some numbers and more letters) as they are usually familiar with Mauritania and know the fun places to visit, while at the same time you'll have a ride all the way to Senegal. (Nanga def? How are you? In [[Africa phrasebook#Wolof|Wolof]], great way to start off your request.)

=== Border Crossing ===
* [[Morocco]]: There actually is no border, just a handful of police checkpoints along the road.
* [[Mauritania]]: Many land mines around the border area, take care! Visa are not issued anymore at the border, you have to get them beforehand at the Mauritanian [[embassy]] in [[Rabat]] (Morocco) or elsewhere they have one ([[Banjul]], [[Dakar]]...).
* [[Algeria]]: The border to Algeria is closed, though it could be possible to get into via Polisario-controlled areas, though this is absolutely not advised if you want to travel safely.
=== North towards [[Trinidad (Bolivia)|Trinidad]] / East towards [[Brazil]] ===
Collectivos 131 and 61 will take you along Avenida Cotoka, which is full of trucks and petrol stations. Ask to confirm, but I believe that the #104 goes all the way to Peaje Guapilo, which is right on the road out of town, and an excellent spot. The road seperates about 10km beyond Pailon.

Otherwise, since it is fairly cheap, a truffi from the Ex-Terminal in the centre will cost 10B, and go direct to Pailon. Get out as it enters the town, 1 hour, and a good idea.

== Places to avoid ==
Violence is contained in specific barrios, but we aware at night. Central areas are super safe and well policed.

== Accommodation and Sleep ==
Couchsurfing proved a little difficult here, and you can not sleep in the central squares, for that matter, even put your feet up on the benches. The Terminal is safe enough, but closed up at night. Lots of people sleep around there, and there are guards.
'''Meppel''' is a city in the [[Netherlands]]. The city is located near ''knooppunt Lankhorst'', the junction where the [[A32 (Netherlands)|A32]] merges into the [[A28 (Netherlands)|A28]].

== Hitching out ==
From the train station it's a brisk 800m walk to the motorway '''A32'''. The two on-ramps are in very different locations, so pay attention which one you want to take depending on the direction you want to travel.

To get from the station to the highway, exit the station at the backside (east side) and walk down the ''Leliestraat'', turn left at the end on the ''Ambachtsweg''. You will end up at a big crossing and see the motorway to your right.

=== South towards [[Zwolle]], [[Amsterdam]] or [[Hoogeveen]], [[Germany]] ===
Cross the ''Hoogeveenseweg'' and walk along ''Blankenstein'' towards the roundabout. The road has two lanes here, with the right one going onto the highway. Just after the first bend there's a good place to stand, right at the sign indicating you're leaving the city.
Most cars will continue south towards Zwolle from here, because the highway junction Lankhorst is located in such a way that coming from Meppel it's faster and shorter to continue along the '''N851''' and go onto the motorway at exit 24 if they want to travel to Hoogeveen or Germany.

=== North towards [[Steenwijk]], [[Leeuwarden]] ===
From the crossing, walk along the ''Hoogeveenseweg'', going under the highway. After around 150m the on-ramp starts at your right side. Because of the nearby traffic lights cars will be able to spot you already quite early.
Kundrthttps://hitchwiki.org/en/index.php?title=Hoogeveen&diff=78382Hoogeveen2015-01-05T12:12:52Z
Kundrt:

Right next to the city centre you'll find the ''Emmerdennen'', a small forest crammed in between some of the cities districts. It might be good for wild camping, although I have no experience with it myself there. To reach it just walk from the train station in eastern direction on the ''Boslaan'', the forest basically starts after 100m.
Kundrt
