* Failed country: Tried to hitchhike in Bolivia in July 2014, giving up after realizing that traffic that day did not exist (and it was freaking cold)
* Coldest position: On December 16, 2009 waited about 8 hours on the Latvian - Russian border at night at temperatures of about -30 °C. Pure fun! Realized only in the morning hours that traffic would only move after sunrise.
*The longest ride ever: 1443 km, пыша to новосибирск, Russia, 50 hours, one truck.
*The fastest ride ever was together with MrTweek hitchhiking from Freiburg towards Hannover, got a driver inbetween who was riding 260 km/h on the German A7 highway.
*The milestone of 25,000 km hitchhiking was reached on May 10, 2008 hitchhiking from Riesenbeck-Birgte towards Münster in a Smart Cabriolet. Amazing!
*The milestone of 50,000 km hitchhiking was reached on April 29, 2009 hitchhiking from Hannover towards Bad Oeynhausen.
*The milestone of 100,000 km hitchhiking was reached somewhere in August 2010 on the road between Faro (Portugal) and Sevilla (Spain) hitchhiking with a Portuguese-Angolan lady.
*The milestone of 150,000 km hitchhiking was reached somewhere between La Pedrera and Rocha on 25 January 2015 in Uruguay, together on the road with Korn after an absence of way too long on the road.

Since May 2006 he hitchhiked in total around 154,996 km through Europe, Asia, Africa and South America (9/2015). A more or less complete record of his trips can be found on hitchlog.

The Covid 2019 pandemic and the public reaction to it that as of April 2021 are ongoing and don't show any concrete signs of ever ending have affected many parts of public and private life. It could be expected that they would also render hitchhiking a much more difficult and precarious way of travelling, however this is not necessarily the case. In this article we gather some information about hitchhiking in the times of Corona.

Apart from the fact that there are currently numerous rules in place to keep people from travelling, it is fairly difficult to get any reliable information about how the pandemic has affected hitchhiking itself. Only anecdotal evidence is available, and that can be quite contradictory.

Legal Problems
Do you have any information about any laws that have been passed that specifically impact hitchhiking? Post them here.

Possible issues are the obligation to wear masks in public space which exists in multiple areas, and conditions that are imposed on crossing borders. However the extent to which these regulations are enforced vary, eg. in Spain and France there is little control and negotiation is often possible. When crossing borders, hitchhiking can work to your advantage if you catch a ride in a car that has the right license plates.

It's safe to say that rules are changing constantly and every country has their own rules. You may have to show a negative corona test and/or vaccination status at borders. You may be forced to quarantine for any number of days. Wearing a face mask may be compulsory inside and even outside. It's probably good to have some idea of the current rules when going from one country to another.

Respect and Safety
Of course it is everybody's own choice if they feel comfortable hitchhiking or travelling at all in the context of a global pandemic, even if the severity of this pandemic is debated by some people. When hitchhiking in this context, in can be respectful to ask the driver who stops for you if they would prefer you wearing a mask, sitting in the back, driving with the windows open -- the great thing about hitchhiking is that it is possible to personally negotiate the level of comfort and safety needed by everybody involved.

Considering the amount of people you come in contact with during a typical hitchhiking trip, hitchhiking can actually be a safer way of travelling than taking a train or especially a bus. It's possible to focus this fact even more by avoiding short rides and aiming for less, but longer rides.

Experiences
Zenit has been hitchhiking on a weekly basis nearly all through 2020 and 2021. To him, it does not seem that hitchhiking has become more difficult at all, in fact he has even been picked up by some people who suffer from social isolation and needed somebody to talk.

Warlo Has hitchiked sparsely thru the pandemic and noticed no significant difference, particularly in Germany where rides are quick and plenty as usual. Also he is very surprised how up until this writing, no driver (and passengers if any) were interested in his offers to wear a mask, sit in the back, etc.

Platschi hitchhiked in Uruguay during the peak of the pandemic and found it very easy. Short waiting times, 1 out of 3 drivers were wearing masks, nobody asked but out of politeness he wore masks inside the vehicles. Hitchhiked without mask outside but put it on as soon as a vehicle stopped. Absolutely no problem.
free testing:

Citizens are able to get one free test per week (result should be available in 15-30min). You get a certificate via email that you can use for border crossing, flying, and so on. You have to register (online) with a German address so better bring an id that doesn't have you address on it if it's not a German one (like a passport should work). It is available at many places (mostly pharmacies) so if one place refuses there are plenty of others to go to. Just ask for "kostenloser Corona-Test" or "free citizen test". Even the limit on one test per week won't be checked. Better make sure it is in English as well if you want to use it for entering another country.
Entry to the country is only permitted for Uruguayan citizens, residents or for travellers with special permits which must be applied for beforehand (family reunion, business).
Platschihttps://hitchwiki.org/en/index.php?title=Hitchhiking_and_Pandemia&diff=102284Hitchhiking and Pandemia2021-08-06T14:13:44Z
Platschi: /* Experiences */ add experience

EU Agreed on a common certificate that should allow free movement within EU-States starting 1st of June. Everyone that has been vaccinated, recovered or has a negative test should be able to move freely within most of Europe(link).

free testing:

Citizens are able to get one free test per week (result should be available in 15-30min). You get a certificate via email that you can use for border crossing, flying, and so on. You have to register (online) with a German address so better bring an id that doesn't have you address on it if it's not a German one (like a passport should work). It is available at many places (mostly pharmacies) so if one place refuses there are plenty of others to go to. Just ask for "kostenloser Corona-Test" or "free citizen test". Even the limit on one test per week won't be checked. Better make sure it is in English as well if you want to use it for entering another country.

Armenia is a city in Colombia.

There is a beautiful botancial garden somewhat hidden in Calarcá some 5-6km east of the city which is worth a small detour if you're on the way to Ibagué or Bogotá.

Hitching out
If you are stuck for a place to sleep for the night, the bus station has great security and is fairly quiet. Guards will wake you at 9am

North towards Medellín
Take bus number 1 (to Oro Negro) from the bus stop on the main street across the gas station, close to the bus terminal (2300 COP) and leave on the roundabout close to Museo del Oro. It's a good spot to catch a ride towards Salento, Pereira, Manizales and further to Medellin.

South towards Cali
Take bus Ruta 9 towards the airport and ask the driver to leave you at Glorieta, just before the bus turns from the main road to the airport. A ticket costs 1500 pesos.

East towards Ibagué, Bogotá
Take the bus going to the nearby town of Calarcá (05/2019: COP 2,300). It leaves quite regularly from a bus stop right behind the cathedral (04°31′55.66″N 75°40′18.21″W). In Calarcá, ask the driver to be let off at the market ("Plaza de Mercado") and cross the town walking East on the same street. At the end of Calle 39 you will meet the highway junction towards Bogotá. To your left you will spot a Mobil gas station (04°31′45.34″N 75°38′02.13″W) on the other side of the road. This is where you can start hitchhiking and asking people for a ride.

Note, traffic from Cali to Bogotá passes here, so it's likely you'll snag a direct lift to the capital. If headed South, ride until a junction just after the Peaje right before Espinal town.

Experiences
jamesvagabond has tried hitching from Calarcá to Bogotá twice, a year apart, and never any luck. The first time there was rioting and trucker strikes, so it wasn't such a surprise. The second time should have been a breeze. Looks like it should be an amazing spot, but YMMV.
Hi Dxc!
Cool that you are cleaning up a lot of wiki pages. On some pages I think you could leave the quotes though, at least when they are written in third person. e.g. "User:XYZ believes that this spot is bad for hitchhiking." In my opinion that adds a personal touch to the wiki. In many cases people do use the first person and then I would agree to delete it. What do you think?
