Here I like to keep some anonymity towards people I don't know (yet?) – but maybe we'll meet some day somewhere on the street or on a hitchhiker convention or something like that?..
'''Sweden''' is a member state of the [[European Union]] as well as the [[Schengen Agreement]]. Many say that hitching in Sweden sucks. But it can work very well! Moreover almost everyone speaks English which will increase your chances of learning from the meetings along the way. As anywhere in Western [[Europe]], the motorways are the holy temples of car driving religion and someone standing on them is committing blasphemy. But you can hitch on the motorway ramps as well as on local roads. Better bring a good map, though, so that you won't end up in an unexpected place. If you travel along the biggest motorway, E4, you will make faster time, but not see that much of Sweden's beautiful landscapes. If your primary aim is to explore the country, you should stay away from E4.

Especially in northern Sweden there are only a few main roads, which means that you might have a shorter time waiting and longer lifts. Be careful to stand somewhere where there is some sign of civilization. As especially in the north the roads are no real motorways and accessible for pedestrians, you can stop all the traffic, especially if you stand on something like a bus stop. When on large motorways you have to take care a little on which petrol station you end up on, as there are too many of them, with sometimes only little traffic on each of them, and as most of the petrol stations are one or two kilometers away from the motorway.

[[User:Perilisk|Anick-Marie]] had no chance at all hitching rides on Öland in May 2005. [[User:EggDestroyer|Aurélien]] hadn't either from Copehnagen to Stockholm in August 2011. On the other hand, [[User:Somewhatofftheway|Ben]] had good experiences in 2010, going most of the way across the country up to Finland. In the summer of 2011 Harry Tattersall Smith and Viljami Laurmaa had an incredible time hitchhiking through the north of Sweden. Any memories of the delays have all but been eclipsed by the fantastic charcaters and experiences we had along the way. Their adventures have been documented [http://glasgowguardian.co.uk/culture/lifestyle/hitchhiking-through-scandanavia/ here] In October 2013 six students at Uppsala University had a hitch-hiking race to Oslo from Uppsala. Splitting into three teams of two, two of the teams had a really straight forward journey arriving into Oslo after seven hours and three lifts along the E18. The final team took two days, staying overnight half-way thanks to the kindness of a local, but nonetheless they made it!
Stricter control and special attention is usually applied to those who look like "being of another race". If you are unlucky, you might be made to strip during their search. Keep in mind, though, that the personality check is not applied to everyone but only to some at random order so you have more chances to quickly cross the border than get stuck explaining to the officials that you are neither a paperless immigrant nor a smuggler.
There is no special need of practicing your Swedish since almost everyone speaks English there. Although it can still be useful to speak a couple of words of Swedish for the few people who don't speak English – some immigrants for example, who are more likely to pick up hitchhikers even so. Check out the [[Northern Europe phrasebook#Swedish|Swedish phrasebook]]. Hitchhiking means ''liftar''.
In Sweden, the wonderful Allemansrätt has existed for many centuries only as a customary law, but since 1994 it is part of the Swedish constitution. As in other Nordic countries, the Swedish right to roam comes with an equal emphasis being placed upon the responsibility to look after the countryside; the maxim is "'''Do not disturb, do not destroy'''".

The Allemansrätt gives a person the right to access, walk, cycle, ride, ski, and camp on any land - with the exception of private gardens, the immediate vicinity of a dwelling house and land under cultivation, and with restrictions for nature reserves and other protected areas. This means that you could put up a tent for free almost anywhere as long as it doesn't disturb anybody. Make sure to '''not leave any garbage''' in the nature – we should really take the responsibility for those future generations will have the same democratic right to the nature as we have, and of course have any nature at all..
Very welcome to enjoy the Swedish nature!

== Useful things ==

You have good chances of finding quite nice '''food''' in the dumpsters of petrol stations along the smaller roads (the E4 is ''not'' a good bet for this). Supermarkets are hard to dumpsterdive in Sweden.

'''Internet''' you can normally get at the public or university libraries for free. Sometimes you have to ask for a guest account.

There's a quite useful '''[[maps|map]]''' ("vägkarta") which you can get at ''OKQ8'' petrol stations for 15 swedish crowns. It's for whole Sweden and has all ''OKQ8'' petrol stations on it, which can be quite handy when hitchhiking and looking for a good place to be dropped off. [http://publikationswebbutik.vv.se/shopping/ShowItem____4483.aspx Here's another map] that you can apparently order for free. {Link is dead - can someone who knows what this was renew/correct it?}

It is quite usual to send a '''thanksaying-message''' the day after a party or after a meeting − saying something like "Thanks for yesterday". When one '''enters a flat''' or an apartment (or go further into a truck cab than the passenger seat), it is a must to take off ones shoes!

It is recommended to bring insect repellent if you hitch during the summer.

For the best chance of getting "lift", go to the petrol stations or were people stop for food along the road. Some Swedes can be quite reserved and for this reason it helps to introduce yourself (with a smile), instead of just being a stranger on the side of the road. Just a thumbs up will work, but might take longer. After 18.00 in the afternoon hitching is difficult here.
[[File:2003 Hitch-hiking in Germany.jpg|thumb|left|250px|[[User:Sigurdas|Sigurdas]] thumbing towards Nürnberg, 2003.]]
'''Germany''' is a member state of the [[European Union]] as well as the [[Schengen Agreement]]. It is a great country for [[hitchhiking]], both on motorways (via [[on-ramp]]s, [[rest area|service stations]], more seldom - parking lots) and local roads. Germans are a little bit suspicious, but nice if you get to know them. Thumbing makes it easier for them to say "no", because they do not even have to look at you. Those who will stop are often people who hitchhiked themselves when they were younger. Many of them have families, jobs and fast cars now.
Because of the absence of speed limits on many motorways it's a good country to hitchhike long distances in short time.

== Road types ==
To hitchhike efficiently in Germany it is good to know the three different kinds of roads between cities and towns. By descending speed these are:
* motorways or expressways called ''Autobahn'' with no speed limit
* federal roads called ''Bundesstraße''
* country roads called ''Landstraße''
Their use in hitchhiking is different and explained below.

=== Autobahn ===
For more information, see the article [[Autobahn]].

[[File:Bundesautobahn_7_number.svg|thumb|left|150px|A traffic sign indicating Autobahn A7]] The autobahns in Germany are the fastest links between cities. Their numbers consist of an '''A''' and the number of the highway. On traffic signs the ''A'' is not mentioned but they can be distinguished by the blue colour of the sign.

The lack of a general speed limit is something most Germans are proud of demonstrating to you and what makes them the best choice for longer distances. Subsequently walking and hitchhiking is illegal on the autobahn and the emergency lane.

As a general rule, you should always stick to the Autobahn as long as possible and try to change between major autobahns as little as possible, even if this means some detours. As soon as you are on the Autobahn and travel between service stations, you are hitching fast and reliable. For more information about this kind of hitchhiking, see the article on [[petrol station hitchhiking]].

As trucks do not travel faster than 90 km/h you might want first try to get a ride hitching a personal car before asking truck drivers. Trucks are great for a night-ride; however, there are restrictions, like in France, of when trucks are allowed on an autobahn. In Germany most trucks aren't allowed on motorways on Sundays or public holidays before 22:00. As most truck drivers stop earlier truck traffic already gets less on Saturday afternoons.

If you travel a specific autobahn, have a look at the [[autobahn]] page where you can find very specific information and hints about hitchhiking on German motorway ramps, etc. - for example, the route [[Amsterdam]]–[[Berlin]] along the [[A2 (Germany)|A2]] and [[A30 (Germany)|A30]].

==== Getting onto the autobahn ====

[[File:Zeichen 330.svg|thumb|right|100px|The on-ramp sign of an autobahn]]

To get onto the autobahn either hitch a ride from a city, thumb at the on-ramp '''before''' the sign or go to a service station by public transportation and walk there. A good possibility is to look for a street with traffic lights that leads to an autobahn. Wait for the red light, then knock at the windows (do not forget to smile!) and ask for a ride. If you look neither like a homeless nor like a drug dealer, they will be happy to help you.

==== Service stations and rest areas ====

You have various possibilities for being dropped off along the autobahn to look for your next ride. As petrol station hitchhiking is faster, try to avoid being dropped at on-ramps where you have to thumb. On the autobahn, it is preferable to be dropped off at a service station instead of a rest area as rest areas have much less cars stopping.

[[File:Zeichen 448.1.svg|thumb|right|150px|Autobahn traffic sign of an Autohof]] The ''Raststätte'' is the usual choice for hitchhiking because most cars tend to refuel there. Make sure your ''Raststätte'' has not just a restaurant but also a petrol stations because more people stop there and they leave quicker. Most ''Raststätten'' are on both sides of the autobahn and there is often a bridge or tunnel nearby to cross. Therefore you might consider hitchhiking to a ''Raststätte'' in the opposite direction first to get onto the highway quicker. At the entrance of the petrol station shop there are usually map stands that show the surrounding area and other service stations in Germany.
With a few exceptions all service stations can be entered by foot from the side and feature an unlocked door in the fence or wall.

The off-autobahn ''Autohof'' is a local fuel station that is marked on traffic signs on the autobahn. Food and fuel is cheaper there but most car drivers don't bother and thus mostly trucks stop there. This means that they are okay on weekdays but have to be avoided on Saturday evenings and Sundays at all cost. Another disadvantage for continuing on the autobahn is that local traffic also stops at the ''Autohof''.

=== Federal ''Bundesstraße'' roads ===

[[File:Bundesstraße 42 number.svg|thumb|right|150px|A traffic sign indicating Bundesstraße B42]] The federal ''Bundesstraße'' roads are indicated by yellow signs and carry numbers like ''B6'' or ''B49''. Like in the case of the autobahn the ''B'' is not written on traffic signs, but federal roads can be distinguished by the yellow colour of the sign. As they are smaller and carry more local traffic they should only be used to get from and to the autobahn, though there are a few exceptions to the rule.

Their general speed limit is 100 km/h and they usually have no emergency lane so they are difficult to thumb. To get a ride either try petrol stations or choose a place where have a lot of space to see you and stop or where they are going slower, e.g. town exits. Police might consider it illegal to thumb in sites where cars cannot stop without putting the traffic in danger.

=== Smaller federal ''Landstraße'' roads ===

These roads are not numbered on traffic signs and usually connect minor towns. As most of them have lower speed limits thumbing is likely to work. As they might not have a lot of traffic coming through they should only be used for getting from and to you final destination.

Hitchhiking in general is legal in Germany. It is only forbidden to hitchhike on the Autobahn itself, meaning you standing on the autobahn or its emergency lane. You are perfectly fine stopping at service stations and asking the people but keep in mind that service stations are private property / leases. It occasionally happened that owners try to get rid of hichthikers at "their" service station. If that happens, just move to the parking space and hitchhike there.
If you want to start hitching at the on-ramps, make sure you stand before the rectangular blue sign indicating the start of the autobahn.

Just like other people, police may or may not be friendly towards hitchhikers. It is said that police controls are more frequent in the southern states of [[Bavaria]] and [[Baden-Württemberg]]. As a foreigner you have to carry your passport at all times; a national ID card is sufficient if you are from another EU country. If you are being checked, be friendly, show it to them and they will leave you alone.

=== Crossing the border ===
Germany has signed the [[Schengen Agreement]] which means that borders with other Schengen countries are open. Since 2009, all neighbouring countries are Schengen members as well, so there are no fixed border controls anymore. At times, there are mobile checks by the police or customs, especially in border regions or on the autobahn.

At the Swiss border, there are still custom controls, but that will probably only affect you if you are on a truck.

== License plates ==
There are between one and three letters on a license plate which show the city or region where the car is registered. For example, look for license plates starting with '''B''' if you're hitching to [[Berlin]]. Have a look at the articles on Wikipedia for more information: [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_car_number_plates German car number plates] (in English) and [http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liste_der_Kfz-Kennzeichen_in_Deutschland Liste der Kfz-Kennzeichen in Deutschland] (in German).
Recommended maps for Germany are listed in [[Maps#Germany|this article]]. You can easily hitch through Germany with just a map that has all service stations along the Autobahn on it. There are maps at many service stations in a little free booklet which are quite misleading, they do '''not''' contain all service stations, just the ones belonging to one of the big companies running them.
For more information look here: [http://www.tank.rast.de/standorte/servicenetz/index.php tank.rast.de]. This is the same one you will find at the service stations as big overview maps, more often than not those can be nicked very easily as well.

== Food and drink ==
Drinking tap water is safe all over the country. You can usually get inexpensive but good food at Italian and Turkish takeaways, the latter ones have ''Döner'' or ''Kebap'' written on them. Typical German fast food shops are marked with ''Imbiss'' signs and sell cheap sausages and French fries. Keep in mind that most shops including some supermarkets close at 20:00 and on Sundays, although many supermarkets might be open until 22:00 during weekdays. Petrol stations, 24-h shops and kiosks have a very limited food choice and are more expensive. As a free alternative you can try dumpster diving. More information on this can be found in the [http://trashwiki.org/en/Germany trashwiki article on Germany].

In nearly every town there are alternative centres where people cook for everybody. The price for a warm dish is between zero and 2 Euro. Have a look at the [http://deu.anarchopedia.org/VoK%C3%BC list here]. (German)

=== Eating on the Autobahn ===
Try to avoid eating on autobahn [[rest area|service stations]] if you want to save money and if have a good taste of food. These restaurants are notoriously expensive and the food quality is quite low. If you're lucky you can find thrown away [http://hitchwiki.org/en/Image:Sanifair_voucher.jpg Sanifair vouchers] of the toilet system. You get a cumulative 0.50 euro rebate for them in the shop.

== Getting Clothes ==
In Germany there are shops where you can bring unused clothes in a good state and/or take new clothes home. It does not cost anything. A list of these shops is available [http://www.umsonstladen.de/ here]. (German)

== Hygiene ==
Most toilets on the service stations are maintained by [[Sanifair]] and are clean. You get a 0.50 euro coupon as part of the 0.70 euro service fee, which you can redeem when buying things at the petrol station shop or in the restaurant. [[User:Pathofdhamma|Pathofdhamma]] suggest to seize the moment and jump the barrier if there are no people or cameras around. The turnstyle is only blocked for the inwards direction. Phone booths that accept coins are still available all over Germany. The older ones are yellow, the newer ones are mostly glass and display a pink T. They are more expensive than using a prepaid card for your cell phone. A nice feature is that you can send SMS, faxes and e-mails even with the oldest types. However, input is a bit cumbersome and in one test it took at half a week to deliver a text message. In some cities there is cheaper ones from other operators than those from "pink T" (i.e. T-Com aka Deutsche Telekom).

A cheaper option is to buy a German prepaid SIM card. They are readily available from mobile shops like ''e-plus'', ''Vodafone'' and ''T-mobile''. A lot of supermarket chains like ''Aldi'', ''Netto'' and ''Lidl'' also have their own brands that use the network of the bigger providers. Check beforehand how to register the SIM card. Sometimes the seller wants to see an ID. If you prefer not to give out your real data you might for example buy a SIM card at ''Aldi'', which you can register via Internet with fake data.

If you want to make calls abroad there are some stores offering international phone booths in bigger cities. They are usually located in migration areas and often include an internet café.

=== Internet ===

==== Without laptop or smartphone ====

There are still some Internet cafés in the bigger cities. Rates are around 2 euro per hour.

In most cities you will find pay per use surf terminals like in the image to the right. They offer internet and telephone services.

==== By laptop or smartphone ====

There are almost no unsecured Wifi access points in Germany because people might be made responsible for illegal actions done through their internet access.

Most German prepaid cards also have a data option if you own a smartphone or a surfstick for your laptop, which also can be bought for about 30 euro. It's often better to buy a single day flatrate for two to five euros instead of using the data tariff. Details depend on your provider.

Some ''Burger King'' restaurants offer free Wifi without any registration. At ''McDonalds'' you get free Wifi for one hour per day without consuming anything. Sometimes the restaurants are located on service stations, you can look them up [http://www.mcdonalds.de/metanavigation/mcfinder/mcfinder.cfm here]. Enter a location in the search mask and make sure to check the option ''WLAN'', the German abbreviation for Wifi. Once there, connect, type in any address and you will be asked for a valid German mobile number, through which you will receive your access code. Take care: in both cases the connection is not encrypted so anything you send in clear text, e.g. when using a browser or e-mail tool without SSL, can be easily recorded by others nearby.

== Language ==
Despite German being the major language, (with over 95% of the population speaking it as a first language [http://www.bbc.co.uk/languages/european_languages/countries/germany.shtml]) you will find that many Germans speak English or French as a second language. Other common languages in the country are Turkish, Russian and Arabic.

=== Learning to speak German ===
The basic hitchhiker needs can be satisfied by a look at the phrasebook [[western Europe phrasebook|here]].

When asking your drivers for help it pays off to know that the German word ''Straße'' for street contains the weird letter ''ß'' which looks a bit like a B. If in doubt try to pronounce the word as if the diacritics didn't exist. For instance, if you pronounce the city ''Würzburg'' as ''Wurzburg'' you will probably be understood.

== Road types ==
To hitchhike efficiently in Germany it is good to know the three different kinds of roads between cities and towns. By descending speed these are:
* motorways or expressways called ''Autobahn'' with no speed limit
* federal roads called ''Bundesstraße''
* country roads called ''Landstraße''
Their use in hitchhiking is different and explained below.

=== Autobahn ===

=== Federal ''Bundesstraße'' roads ===

'''Norway''' is a country in [[Europe]]. It is a member state of the [[Schengen Agreement]], but is not part of the [[European Union]]. Its capital is [[Oslo]]. Its neighbouring countries are [[Sweden]], [[Finland]] and [[Russia]].

The main challenge while traveling in Norway is the rapidly shifting weather, so be prepared for anything, as they say here: ''There is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing''.

Most people speak [[England|English]] well enough for reasonable communication. People have been told to be wary of foreigners. Recently, it's been all over the news that some gypsies wait on the road with a broken car and steal cars from people stopping to help them, and it doesn't help much, especially if you're not quite white. If you look like a hobo your chance decreases further. Look presentable to increase your chances of getting picked up and be friendly. Ask questions.

== Hitchhiking culture ==
'''Norway''' is not an easy country to hitch in, but it can be rewarding! Even though ''haike'' is not too common in Norway, people are very likely to pick you up and can be very friendly and helpful. Like in Sweden, foreign tourists and immigrants are more likely to [[picking up hitchhikers|pick up hitchhikers]].

''(see also: [[Talk:Norway|No, it is not easy to hitchhike in Norway]])''

Norwegians have a tendency to always be on the rush on weekdays. Waiting times can be a bit longer around [[Oslo]] and in remote areas where traffic is very light. People expect some chatting since distances are long, and seem to have little tolerance for drug or alcohol use while on the road.

A large part of the population lives near the road, which extends from the [[Sweden|Swedish]] border in the South to almost all the way North, so when going North it's pretty hard to get lost, as long as you are headed the right way.

Hitchhikers had varying experiences in the beautiful North. Some locals hitch regularly to commute. You can hitch a ride from mostly anywhere as there is not much traffic. Another challenge are the long winter nights, which make the hitchhiking day very short unless you are well equipped for [[Hitchhiking at night|night hitchhiking]]. In the North, total darkness sets in from around mid-November. Don't forget the specifics of [[Winter|winter hitchhiking]].

It's common knowledge that truck drivers are very friendly and that the hitching is great if you go out to the shipping areas around Dyre Halses Gate in [[Trondheim]] and North of StrandveienWhich one? Does this question refer to the previous misspelling of Strandveien?, but some hitchhikers have said otherwise. It's also much faster traveling alone considering that trucks and some commercial vehicle can only take 1 passenger. Around four in the afternoon, drivers have loaded incoming goods from that day and are leaving for a late/overnight haul to the next major city.

=== Hitching rides on ferries ===

If possible, try to find out the ferry schedule. Hitch on the side where the cars drive into the ferry because in many places it's hard to hitch on the other side. Yuu can maybe knock on people's windows when they wait for the ferry, especially if they come early and have to wait long, it's easy to talk to them. You can maybe try to hitch into cars that have already paid for the ferry but on almost all car ferries, and definitely all the short distance ones, you pay extra for each passenger so that would be sneaking. In a few ferries the driver might have paid for the car not dependent on passengers, but that is a rare case.
Blackriding the ferries is also very easy most of times. Just don't show up too much, there is always a queue (long or not) of cars waiting for it, ticket sellers are on board or at the harbour and they go directly, one by one to each car to make the ticket. When the ferry arrives and the ticket sellers (can recognize them easily) are busy making tickets to cars just enter the ferry and nobody will tell you anything, the guys at the entrance of the boat are not supposed to check tickets just to tell cars where to go so they won't stop you nor anything, just think that you have already paid before. Of course if there are other "backpackers" stay away from them cause they are the first to be approached for tickets when the boat arrives. Fede, his brother and a polish hitchhiker (that makes 3 people together) easily entered in that way every time, from [[Lofoten]] Islands to [[Bodo]] as around Sognesfjord and [[Bergen]]

Popular Ferry routes to Denmark and Germany are Kristiansand-Hirtshals, Larvik-Hirtshals (ColorLine), Oslo-Frederikshavn and Oslo-Göteborg-Kiel (StenaLine). With ColorLine, cars carrying up to 5 people don't pay extra, so it's possible to hitch a ride on the ferry for free (not correct anymore as of November 2012: extra passenger is 5€. It would be an acceptable price, but since ALL of the drivers buy tickets on-line with 50% discount, it's almost impossible to catch a ride at the ticket office. We had to give up and hitchhike all the way to Oslo, Sweden and then Denmark. So you better don't rely on this possibility) StenaLine operates overnight only, so even if you manage to find a car, they'll still force you to pay for a very expensive berth (500+ kr). If you're heading to Denmark (the ports of Hirtshals and Frederikshavn are quite close to each other) it makes no sense to take the StenaLine from Oslo, because it takes a really long time (12h!!! that's the way to make you spend as much as possible on board) and you can sail from [[Larvik]] in about 4h, which is reasonably close to Oslo to reach in about 2 hours.

A note about hitching trucks! Alert, it is no longer possible to hitch trucks on Stena lines and probably Colorline as well. Only drivers allowed. when i asked several trucks in Frederikshaven they all said not possible.
=== License plates ===
There is a coding for areas: the two first letters identify the region in which the vehicle is first registered, but as the plates migrate with the vehicle and Norwegians travel pretty much all around the country, it's not something hitchhikers rely on.
== Borders ==
Norway is part of Schengen and doesn't have border check for people coming from Sweden or Finland. It does have a border with Russia though, and there are still checks for goods. Norwegian border checks can be picky, especially if you're crossing it with a truck and even more if it's an empty one.

== Eating & Drinking ==
Food is expensive! Fresh fruits and veggies are even more expensive, especially in the North; but the dumpsters are full! especially of fresh fruits and veggies (mostly exotic like mangos avocados and bananas, tonnes of them but also of any other, from tomatoes to strawberries, blueberries, anything your appetite and taste may want) . Take as much food across the border as you can possibly carry, but no worries, when you will have finished it the dumpsters will surely fill your stomach, prefer small villages and towns than big cities since there is more food and dumpsters are (almost) always unlocked; plus food like oat, flat "fullkorn" bread, cooked legumes in metal or tetrapak boxes like beans, chickpeas, lentils, etc are defniitely cheap or at least affordable (around 1E per piece but often even less) and constitute a good way to buy something in order to "borrow" from supermarkets (since the security is not really active) the expensive food you need and can't pay.
[[User:Guaka|guaka]] and Erga had a ride from Sweden all the way to [[Alta]] in the North and were smart enough to buy a box of food in a Swedish supermarket.
[[User:Fedecicco|Fede]] and his brother hitchhiked and dumpsterdived all across the country for 3 weeks, and paid very few money for food .

== Accommodation & Sleeping ==
It's a common misconception that you can put your tent anywhere for as long as you like in Norway. Norway has very liberal laws on tenting that gives the campers a lot of rights, but it's important to know the limitations.

You are allowed (and even have the right by law) to put your tent anywhere that is defined as "outland", as contrary to "inland". That means, anywhere the land is not cultivated. For instance, it is not allowed in farmland, in a park, in a roundabout, or in a backyard. If it is, however, a untended forest or a wild-growing field, you can by right pitch your tent and stay there for 3 days. After 3 days you are required to move your tent.

Though you cannot by right put your tent in a place like a park, it is generally tolerated for a night, but don't leave your tent standing while you explore the city during the day. You can also ask at a place like a petrol station if you may put it up out back.

Few train stations are open 24h, it can be handy for a warmer night in winter time (Oppdall, Mosjoen ...)
Other way to not freeze during winter, you can sleep in elevators on the train station like Paradis station in Stavanger. Nobody disturbed till 5:00 in the morning.

In Oslo, you can pitch your tent around the train station of Skullerud, or in Bygdoy (where you find most of the museums) walk West before the King's property. There take any trails into the forest.

The Torp Airport is closed overnight, but there is a nice forest just before the car park. There is as well a nice park on the hill in Sandfjord. Do not hitch on the motorway but take the secondary road between the airport and the town (Sandford train station is closed overnight). Oslo Gardemoen also has a nice pitch of forest somewhere inside that giant parking lot, you can even take the free parking shuttle bus back to the bus stop in the morning ;)
'''Croatia''' is a country in [[Southern Europe]]. It is a member state of the [[European Union]] and is preparing to join the [[Schengen Agreement]] by 2015.
Croatia can be great for hitchhiking. It is quite easy to hitch along the coast, and waiting time rarely exceeds 20 minutes.
[[File:Croatia_minefields.png|thumb|left|Minefields in Croatia]]
Some routes, however, might appear to be more difficult to hitch but with some portion of patience one can get a ride almost anywhere in this Balkan country.

When hitchhiking during the summer season be aware of the fact that most of the people going to Croatia for holidays are not very rich so they have their cars full. Sometimes it's hard to get a lift, because most of the people on the road are these travelers. When going out of the country you can choose either to go out at the weekend or not. When choosing the weekend, on one hand it is absolutely one of the best ways to hitchhike. The columns sometimes are more than 10 km long and the cars barely go, the most of the time they stand. So it is easy when you have a ride to get out of the car and walk between the cars in the lines and ask maybe directly for your destination. There are at least columns before every toll and before some tunnels that go only one way and before the border. ''[[User:Amines | Amines]] was hitchhiking at Saturday towards the coast at the A1 highway on a gas station after [[Zagreb]] but gave up after 4 hours, walked across the road where there was a column and got a ride directly to [[Bratislava]] within 5 minutes.'' On the other hand it takes time to get out of the country because you will wait in this columns for hours and hours.

Aside from Croatian, Italian is widely known in some areas. Croatians are also extremely open, friendly, and hospitable, although there are known accidents of nationalistic hatred being directed onto foreign travelers. It is nonetheless definitely a must-see country with beautiful landscape, islands, and warm sea.

The coastal road is beautiful, however be careful of where you are dropped off. You may find yourself with a mountain on one side and sudden drop on the other.

'''WARNING'''
There are some landmines left in Croatia. [[User:Whisperingofthestars|Jason]] and Kelsey stumbled across signs in the middle of the night in central Croatia. Ask locals about this if you're sleeping out. It is advised to ask to stay in people's gardens or in the truck. However with the exception of some areas outside of- specifically just south of- [[Zadar]], the coastline is completely clear. Please be aware of this and be careful!
=== To [[Slovenia]] ===
Now that Slovenia had joined the [[Schengen]] agreement, and thereby becoming the external border of the E.U, less drivers are willing to drive strangers into Slovenia. It can be difficult to get a ride from Zagreb to Slovenia. To avoid troubles and good chances of getting stuck while hitchhiking in this direction, some hitchhikers chose to go to Zagreb train station, buy a ticket till Sutla (1.5 Euro), and stay on-board after the train passes Sutla up until the Slovene village of Dobova (these are 5 minutes of a voyage with no ticket check) - from there it's easy to hitch further towards [[Maribor]] or [[Ljubljana]].

'''Portugal''' is a country located in south-western [[Europe]] on the Iberian Peninsula. Portugal is the westernmost country of mainland Europe and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and south and by [[Spain]] to the north and east. The Atlantic archipelagos of the [[Azores]] and [[Madeira Islands|Madeira]] are also part of Portugal.

People are very friendly in general. During the summer, especially the coastline is overrun with tourists. In Portugal people are easy going and sometimes slow. Everything needs its time, so you will probably have to wait for a little while. Long distance buses are usually a bit late.

=== Hitchhiking ===
Hitching in Portugal is quite easy. (This is absolutely not my experience, at least when I compare to Germany...) However, it is important that you are protected from the sun. The [[weather]] is, especially in summer, extremely hot. As an alternative to hitchhiking you can use the buses from ''Rede Expresso'' for overland travels. The railway network is not in a good state, it is slow and there are only two lines.

==== Truck Routes ====
A common way in Portugal for long distance lorries is to take the Autopista Castilla ([[:Category:E80|E80]]). There is a huge truck stop at the border where they can get cheap Portuguese food, so many just wait until they get there before going to other areas of Portugal, mostly to [[Porto]] and [[Lisbon|Lisboa]].

=== Eat and Drink ===
You make a good deal if you buy on the local markets where you can expect good quality for low prices. Fruits, vegetables, fish and meat have mostly good prices. Expensive is cheese, fruit juice, haribo and chocolate.

In restaurants you will always get bread, cheese, butter and olives without being asked. This will cost extra. As starter there is a soup usual and as main course grilled fish or grilled meat with rice or chips. Portuguese people often eat grilled stuff or stew. The meals are mostly simple.

=== Sleep ===

if you don't find anything through the typical hospitality exchange networks, you can try to stay with the firemen. Each Bombeiros station in Portugal has a room where they can host passing travellers, and it is free. These (mostly volunteer) fire-fighters are friendly and chatty, when they speak English. Make sure you go ask early enough, however, as the station commander has to verify that you can stay... ([[User:janpa|janpa]] tried it in several stations in March 2013 and had no luck. Might work in remote areas though, or if you are a fireman yourself.)

Throughout the three warmer seasons, and in winter too if you have a tent or find shelter, you can sleep outside without much hassle.
Hi! Your user page category has been changed to '''Category:Hitchhikers in Germany''' because from now on this (along with the old Category:Hitchhikers) will be a standard categorization for hitchhikers on hitchwiki.org (see [[Category talk:Hitchhikers|this discussion here]] for the reasons of doing so). If for some reason you don't want to be categorized by country, feel free to delete country category on your page leaving only a standard Category:Hitchhikers. We hope you don't mind, though.
: Well - this is kinda embarrassing. Anyways, here's for some explanation:
: I was just inserting links with the right spelling into an article on the german hitchwiki. Since they didn't work and the german thing links to the english articles for german motorways, I thought I'd just fix the whole issue. It is not only the official spelling for the german "Autobahn"s, it's also really logical to have the space at least after our spelling rules. I didn't and still don't see the harm of the moves because we still have redirects to cover those who type it without the space...--[[User:Speckmade|Speckmade]] 13:31, 3 February 2012 (CET)
::Let me understand this, to correct something on the German wiki you start moving all the pages on the English one? Sheesh, that's really good for consistency on the English one where George has been setting up these pages for weeks. [[User:Prino|Prino]] 15:59, 3 February 2012 (CET)
::: I guess the cleanest way to do this is having redirects for any motorway. I think it's always a good idea to have many redirects to cover anything a visitor could type into the searchbox, or an editor could type into a link. Let me know if you want to move/create/edit/delete a lot of articles after a certain pattern at once. There are ways to automate this.
::: Anyway, it's nice ask on talk pages before doing mass edits. There are always some very active people around here who read the RecentChanges, so there will usually be some opinions or at least responses very quick. --[[User:MrTweek|MrTweek]] 18:09, 3 February 2012 (CET)

::: I just thought I'd make everything the way it should be while I'm already at it. Sure I will take care of consistency, if you let me. The whole thing was about consistency, kind of. I can also take care of other occurances. (I got computers and full-text search to my help - it's no big deal, really.) I didn't destroy those pages, I just moved them. I don't see the harm. : "A 1" is short for "(Bundes-)Autobahn 1" and such numbering is separated by a space. See [http://bmvbs.de/DE/VerkehrUndMobilitaet/Verkehrstraeger/Strasse/strasse_node here], for example; the documentation for OpenStreetMap contributors is [http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_Germany/Kreisstra%C3%9Fen#Hinweise_zum_Taggen_und_zur_Benennung explicit] on that. - Well, this isn't much more than explanations and some more or less official sources for the moment... : Official rules are [http://www.ids-mannheim.de/service/reform/ here], I guess.--[[User:Speckmade|Speckmade]] 20:44, 9 February 2012 (CET)
:: If you need the space, then you can write <nowiki>[[A1 (Germany)|A 1]]</nowiki>, with the space behind the second A. While I began creating the motorway articles, I looked for examples and the former articles all hadn't a space in the article's name. --[[User:GeorgDerReisende|GeorgDerReisende]] 22:55, 9 February 2012 (CET)
::: Not having a space is the most logical thing. I think that 99% (if not 99.99%) of all people will type "A1" into the search box, rather than "A 1". [[User:Prino|Prino]] 23:18, 9 February 2012 (CET)
:::: ...and they get to the right page anyway due to the redirect pages I left in place for them.
:::: Do you acknowledge that it is indeed the right spelling ''with'' the space? Can you follow the logic of my reasoning? The "A" is an abbreviation of the word "Autobahn", not a number like "alpha" or something. It is quite logical to separate that from the number. It is only coincidence that the next smaller category of roads in Germany is called "B" - "B" for "Bundesstraße" (the next category is "K" for "Kreisstraße").--[[User:Speckmade|Speckmade]] 04:12, 10 February 2012 (CET)
Speckmadehttps://hitchwiki.org/en/index.php?title=User_talk:Speckmade&diff=59618User talk:Speckmade2012-02-09T19:44:16Z
Speckmade:

It is not only the official spelling for the german "Autobahn"s, it's also really logical to have the space at least after our spelling rules. I didn't and still don't see the harm of the moves because we still have redirects to cover those who type it without the space...--[[User:Speckmade|Speckmade]] 13:31, 3 February 2012 (CET)
Speckmadehttps://hitchwiki.org/en/index.php?title=User_talk:Speckmade&diff=59361User talk:Speckmade2012-02-03T12:31:09Z
Speckmade:

Maybe you can write a bit about yourself on [[User:Speckmade|your userpage]] (or at least link to your user page on the German wiki). ===Categories===

Happy hitching,

[[File:Autobahnen in Deutschland.svg|thumb|right|400px|Germany's Autobahn-Network]]
'''Autobahn''' is the German word for motorway. When hitching long distances in or though [[Germany]], always stick to the Autobahn. There is no general speed limit which can make hitchhiking very fast. Driving 150–200 km/h is pretty usual, but with a little luck, you can get lifts going far more than 200 km/h. Look out for business men with fast cars.

== Numbering Scheme ==
* The Autobahns A 1–A 9 are crossing the whole country.
* A 10–A 99 are regional motorways, the lower numbers in the north, higher numbers in the south.
* Higher than A100 are short motorways, usually connecting motorways to cities or to other motorways.
* Motorways with even numbers go in East-West-Direction, odd numbers go from North to South.
