Ruta 5 goes right through the heart of the city, many vehicles, especially trucks, don't stop here and go north.
One option is to start hitchhiking right at the street light in the center (crossroads between Ruta 5 and Ruta 41, next to the mall).It's not really optimal because of the amount of cars not going further north but you have other options:Alternatively, - there's a Copec service station about 7 km North of the center.- the "real" entrance to ruta 5, this is where you will get all (and only) the traffic going north (-29.88651, -71.25446). In July 2023 a lot of this path was in construction (and it seems that it will stay that way for a while). The cars and trucks go slow and have a lot of space to stop.
== Accommodation and Sleep ==
There are gas stations next to the bus terminal which tolerate camping hitchhikers. Alternatively, hitchwiki user Eristoff had some success sleeping on the dry river bed of Rio Elqui (from "Plaza de Armas", face the church and go left, you will find it in about 700m).
West of the main mall you also have lots of fields (a lot of them are fenced but there are a few openings).
