From this gasolinera ask a ride for the toll booth (14km east), "la siguiente caseta" in Spanish. If your ride isn't going further then get down at the toll booth and it's fairly easy to get another ride from there too.

From the central bus station, take the bus to the town of Taretan (30 MXN as of 2022 march). Ask the driver to drop you of at the casseta the cobro of Taretan when the bus turns from the highway. From there you should have no problem hitching a ride south. I've tried this and got a ride all the way to Zihuatanejo in 20 minutes.
