Destination Proposals

Please add your comments/ideas to this list of cities. When adding proposals or suggestions, please keep in mind that the prevailing opinion at 789 was to have a sort of club/local community/people at or nearby the spot to help organizing the whole event. The visa-issues thing with Eastern European hitchhikers also can not be solved easily, the only solution at the moment would be to have the event in Moldova/Ukraine every year. So the general idea is to switch between Western and Eastern Europe yearly. If you do not agree with this point of view, please feel free to state your arguments!

At the nomadbase conference, there was a consensus that we should let a driver pick it random. And Munster was picked. Is that void? --Sitarane 02:35, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

  • + Balaton-Zanka, Lake Balaton Hungary

=== Balaton-Zanka: Glorious location, on the Lakeside; Camping plots are fabulous - can Camp/wake up metres from the shimmering See & is Central-but-Eastern Europe all in one go. What could be better for a solution & location?

Monte Carlo, Monaco

  • + hopefully make an impact on the upper class/rich people, invading the city with hitchhikers, put their world off balance for a little while
  • - pretty place but expensive I guess

Vama Veche, Romania

  • + consists of 500 inhabitants, beautifull village on the seaside just by Bulgarian border
  • + it's easy to hitch in from any directions (Constanta, the big city is close) where from lots of cars go towards Bulgaria
  • + reasonable prices (comparable to polish ones)
  • + drinking in public is not heavily prohibited
  • + there are lots of people camping every year with their tents, during summer there are hundreds of tents put up in a huge line long the coast
  • + beach would be refreshing to have around during the summer heat
  • + good music played in local bars and clubs around
  • + groceries are close at hand
  • + Romania is a famous country for its hitchhiking culture((not really famous from a Romanian point of view, but it`s certainly easily hitchable and would help a lot opening people's minds if more of us did it there))
  • + this is a chill out and party place for young Romanian students/etc in the summer (really anti-touristy)
  • - Not within Schengen Area (until 2011)
  • + Not within Schengen Area - guaka thinks this is probably a good thing for people from many countries.

Münster, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

  • + beautiful city, huge countryside around
  • + proposed by German hitchhiking club Abgefahren e.V. who is willing to help organizing the event
  • + possible cooperation with GLEN (www.glen-europe.org) and ASA (www.asa-programm.de) that organized Eurizons http://www.eurizons.net/)
  • + good highway connections, easy to reach
  • + bicycle capital of Germany: ideal for trying to hitch with a bike
    • (I don't understand this one: That there are a lot of bikes in the city doesn't help you to get a lift with your bike (to the city), does it? Or do you want to try getting a lift on somebody else's bike? --Scandinaïve 19:37, 10 January 2010 (UTC))

Kaunas, Lithuania

  • + Keliaivis hitchiking club is operating there
  • + Tuchkus, will bring some hammos !
  • + Vilnius hitchhiking club in the country (very experienced with events and very active)
  • + Cheap country
  • + Easy to reach from east and west
  • + The third Riga Good Times couchsurfing meeting is held nearby in end of July/beginning of August
  • + One of the most hitchhiking friendly countries in the continentx

Chişinău, Moldova

  • + Cheap country
  • - No HH club
  • - the same corner as 789 was
  • - Some people are banned from country (Transnistria -border-crossing problems). /+ Is that an issue? It is possible to travel around Transnitria. For people actually living in Transnistria I don't know though.

Gent, Belgium

  • + There is a (small) Belgian hitchhiking community
  • + It is very central so more people will come
  • + great bike paths: ideal for trying to hitch with a bike
    • (I don't understand this one: That there are a good bike paths in the city doesn't help you to get a lift with your bike (to the city), does it? Or do you want to try getting a lift on somebody else's bike? --Scandinaïve 19:37, 10 January 2010 (UTC))

somewhere in the lakes of Finland

  • + There is a finnish hitchhiking community
  • + free camping - all we need is a nice corner next to some lake, no permissions needed
  • + very nice countryside / nature
  • + The European Rainbow gathering will be held here in the summer 11. july - 10. august (maybe in Lapland)
  • + Easy to reach from east (rather easy to get visa for Russians)
  • + Easy and safe to hitchhike (to/in)
  • + Rectum of the world (a bit far away)= more challenging/fun to reach
  • + The third Riga Good Times couchsurfing meeting is held nearby in end of July/beginning of August
  • + The European Juggling Convention 2010 will be held nearby, in Joensuu.
  • - Expensive (level of Norway, Denmark and Ireland)
  • - Rectum of the world (a bit far away)
  • - All Finland, ESPECIALLY THE LAKES is a mosquito nest in summer. Like you cannot even imagine unless you've seen it.
  • - Are we not doing it for the sake of visibility? Well, the idea can evolve of course...

Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina

  • + cheap country
  • + less tourism
  • - no hitchhiking club

Lisboa, Porto, Somewhere in Portugal

  • + cheap
  • + far west and thus a nice challenge
  • + touch the atlantic
  • + invade the iberian peninsula
  • + stop the myth, that hithchhiking in spain is impossible! Good competition!
  • + Porto is one of the most beautiful cities in europe
  • + Possible to make a stop in south france!
  • + beaches, sun, good weather nearly guaranteed
  • - The temperatures at this time of year will be incredibly high.
  • - do you think that hh is part of beach holydays ?

OZORA festival, Hungary

  • + Please change the date, because its during a very good festival
  • + Around Balaton lace is nice place for gathering and not far from the festival
  • + Balaton-Zanka: Glorious location, on the Lakeside; Camping plots are fabulous - can Camp/wake up metres from the shimmering See & is Central-but-Eastern Europe all in one go. What could be better for a solution & location?

Iceland

  • It is certainly possible to hitchhike the ferries from northern scotland and sweden in summer to iceland as it is pay per car, not passenger.
  • A great, interesting challenge.
  • Incredible wildlife
  • At the moment, everything should be quite cheap due to the downfall of the economy and, too, dumpster diving is reportedly incredible here.
  • Hitchhiking in the summer around the (singular) motorway is known to be really very easy..if you see a car..
