There is a translation for ''to hitchhike'', being '''zamyn unaand daygdakh'''. The accuracy of this translation is not proven, though (and especially if it includes the absence of payment, a notion notoriously hard to come by in Mongolia). A ''hitchhiker'' is '''zamyn unaand daygdagtsh'''.

Revision as of 00:25, 8 January 2014

This phrasebook aims to provide basic expressions for hitchhikers in the major Asian languages.

Arabic

Chinese

The main problem with Chinese is the pronunciation; if you want to learn some phrases it would probably be best to listen to them first.

  • ni chu nar le? -- where are you going?
  • wo chu... -- I am going to...
  • meio chian -- no money... (the only way I know to tell them that you are hitchhiking)
  • gong lu -- highway
  • gao se gong lu -- expressway
  • zega/nega -- this/that
  • nar -- where
  • boo yao djege! -- I don't want this!
  • fay chang gan sje! -- Thank you very much!

The best option probably is to have a driver who knows some english translate your most important phrases into chinese characters and write them on a card so you can show them to everybody.--Worldhitch 17:45, 7 October 2007 (CEST)

Since it is pretty hard to learn the right pronunciation outside of China it might be helpful to write down some phrases in chinese characters so you can show to your driver. Here is a short list of phrases written in traditional chinese characters that are used in Taiwan:

  • 你去哪裡? -- where are you going?
  • 我想去。。。 -- I'd like to go to...
  • 我沒有錢。 -- I don't have any money.
  • 您走公路嗎? -- Do you take the highway?
  • 我們在哪裡? -- Where are we?
  • 可以停車嗎? -- Can you stop the car, please?
  • 我要下車. -- I want to leave the car. (does not sound as impolite in chinese as it does in english).
