Avignon is a city in the South of France.
Two highways pass by Avignon or close to it. The first one ist the A7 that links Marseille to Lyon and the second one the 9 that links Perpignan to Orange, from where the two highways become just one the A7
South, towards Aix-en-Provence, Marseille A7
If you are travelling on the A7 (either North or South) The best option to hitchhike is to take the public transport to get to the péage at Le Pontet From the city center take bus number two direction IKEA and get out at the last stop IKEA, from there follow the signs to the péage and you´ll be there in less than 5 minutes. This is the closest péage in Avignon and there is therefore lots of traffic. [] Tried this lots of time and got always a ride in less than 5 minutes.
Jason has hitched out of Avignon twice and did it without problem. Perhaps it may be best to fly a sign for the motorway to Paris and Lyon (A7?) and get to the peage. From there, you'll find many people going every direction. To begin hitching, head out out the city walls and follow the signs.
Hitchhiking direction A9
North, towards Orange
South, towards Nîmes, Montpellier
The best option to reach the highways it´s by public transport. Take bus number 40 from Porte de l'Oulle (€1.40 in 2017) direction Grand Angles and get out at the last stop (situated at the Centre Commercial Leclerc) From there walk to the big round-about in front of McDonald's and stay there with your sign. All the cars going to the péage (Remoulins) pass by there. And there is a stop sign with gravel they can pull up on so they have to slow down and have the time to pick up hitchhikers. [] I´ve done this million of time and usually work very well.
It does help if you hold a sign that says Peage because there is also lots of people just going around and the peage it's just 9 km away, after the peage it's easy as usual
Beyond the city walls and by the river, there are many fields in abundance and possible sheds to fend off the rain.
Search around and you can find fantastic skips full of bread and vegetables/fruit. Get away from the tourist area a little if you can to find more success.
