B54 (Germany)

The B54 is a German Bundesstrasse (one step smaller than the Autobahn, but still forbidden to hitch on) between Gronau and Wiesbaden.

It is the main connection coming from Enschede or in general from the Netherlands going to Münster and/or if the traveler wants to continue onto the A1 towards Dortmund or Hamburg, though in direction Hamburg the A30 could be also considered, but it's still a pain in the ass to hitch northwards from the A30 onto the A1.

• 16px Gronau-West (good) - (bad)
  • Towards Enschede enough traffic to get at least onto the on-ramp Enschede-Zuid of the A35. Into Germany traffic is extremely low on this on-ramp, for obvious reasons, you will see if you get stranded there :) But still there's traffic and it's possible. Traffic islands on both sides are sufficient for stopping cars directly when they turn onto the ramp. No hard-shoulder.

• 16px Gronau-Epe (good) - Template:Very bad
  • In direction Netherlands pretty good, just make sure you walk up about 20 meter. No hard shoulder, but enough green to stand on. Don't stop lorries here, but cars can pick you up easily. In direction West it's the worst construction ever, nearly impossible for cars to stop and traffic lights also don't really help.
• 16px Gronau-Ost (average)
  • Low traffic, mostly lorries, dangerous to stop them. Traffic island in direction west. No hard shoulder.
• A31
  • Do not get out here unless you want to get picked up by border police to pay a huge fine.
• 16px Ochtrup / Heek (average)
  • Average traffic, traffic island to stand on, cars see you ages ago and have place to stop, though no hard shoulder.

  • Low traffic, out of the way-ramp, but you can flag down cars going up, mostly good experiences here.
• 16px Metelen
  • New on-ramp, before it was possible to hitch the Steinfurt traffic here onto the B54.

  • Low traffic, but huge hard shoulder to stop cars.
