Our experience was hitchhiking into Hopkins after catching the bus to the intersection with the Southern Highway. The distance into the sleepy little town is too far to walk and the local bus into the town is quite infrequent. It is likely that you will come across locals at the shack on the corner who are waiting for the bus. They noted that it was commonplace to try to hitch a ride while waiting for the bus, whichever comes first.
There is very little traffic out of the town, catch the bus south to Placentia. From Placentia there is a ferry to Mango Creek. (note: Placentia at the end of a long, thin peninsula.)
From Mango Creek walk from the ferry to the main road and stick out you thumb. We managed to get a ride with a school bus to the intersection with the Southern Highway to Punta Gorda.
