Bielefeld is a city in the German federal state North Rhine-Westphalia.

Despite a well-known running gag, Bielefeld obviously exists.

Hitching Out

East, West towards A2 (Dortmund, Hannover)

You have different options to go onto the A2

  • First: Take a tram towards Sieker and get off at the last stop. There is some space to stop cars right behind the traffic lights in direction of A2 (on-ramp BI-Zentrum). You can hitch a ride here all the way along Detmolder Strasse until that point where a road leading to A2 begins. Get out here and walk behind the traffic lights some 50m over the grass until you can stand on the hard shoulder. Wave you thumb and hitch a ride to the motorway. Best spot in Bielefeld, see map for closer information/clarification.
  • Second: Take a train or a bus to Herford from where you can take a bus to Alten Markt (many bus lines); from there you can take the line #S5 to the Zoo. When at the Zoo, keep on walking to the motorway. When you are in front of a bridge walk right for the service station towards Dortmund, and further behind the bridge if heading to Hannover.
  • Third: Try to get to A2's on-ramp Bielefeld-Sennestadt in the south-east of the city. At the on-ramp in direction of Oberhausen / Dortmund you will find a lay-by where cars can easily stop. It's a bit harder if you are heading North - you will find some traffic lights but cars normally drive up to the motorway quite fast and there isn't any vast hard shoulder for cars to stop.

North towards Osnabrück, Halle (Westfalen), A33

If going north, this might be the best option: Take a tram towards Brackwede. Get off at that station and walk down to the tunnel. Go in direction north-west (to your left, roughly saying) where you'll come to a meadow. Cross this field over to a street where you will see a traffic light some 100m further up. You're now in the Bielefeld district of Quelle. Walk straight forward over the crossing, and after appr.50m you'll find enough of space for stopping a car. Traffic mainly comes from the left side, slowly, moving up towards Halle or further. Cars can stop easily along the hard shoulder. Additionally, you could ask drivers at the supermarket just next to you, but traffic might be quite local in there.
