Hitching out
Hitchhiking either East or West from Calgary is fairly straightforward -- take a bus as far as you can, walk until you're in a sparsely populated area, and begin hitchhiking. The city has an urban sprawl problem and grows physically larger every year, so you may have to walk quite a ways.
