Hitching North towards France: Bordeaux, Toulouse
Try some gas stations on the way to the highway. We tried the one closest to the city centre at Av de Navarra/Calle de Zemoriya and found a French car going all the way over the boarder, dropping us at the first French gas station.
If you have no luck: Take the local train to Irun and walk to the motorway. At the border there is a toll-gate, where you can ask for lifts. It's easy to go to Bordeaux, France and it should also be possible to find a ride heading into Spain or Portugal.
A bit further, there is also a huge truck stop.
