Gent is a city in Belgium. It's one of the biggest cities in Belgium, however it's fairly small compared to metropolitans like London and Paris. Ghent has a very big university, so you can expect to see very much students. The student area is mainly focused around the Sint Pietersplein, however university buildings and student dorms are scattered all over the city. Ghent (like the rest of Belgium), is relatively cheap. Expect to see a lot of cafe's, restaurants and snack bars where you can get a drink or food at reasonable prices. Intresting places to visit are the students quarter, the Veldstraat (shopping street), 't Gravensteen (a big castle), numerous squares (Vrijdagsmarkt, Kouter, ...), etc. It's located not far off from Bruges and Brussels, which are excellent towns to visit aswell. <map lat='51.0232305112709' lng='3.7099027633667' zoom='14' view='0' float='right' />

Hitching Out

Southwest towards Lille

  • Option 1: Getting out of Gent isn't too difficult. Try getting a ride at the light here, all traffic has to stop so you have plenty of time to talk to people or show your sign off. But make sure you don't make the mistake of trying to get there by getting on the ramp here. It's a lot longer than it looks and cars are going dangerously fast. You'll end up having to jump from the bridge to the ground below like Zac did.
  • Option 2: Go to the big round about "de sterre" near the Sint Pieter station. There you can hitch the N60 towards "Oudenaarde" until you reach the highway E17 at Eke.

Useful Resources

You can get free internet acces at the university library "de boekentoren" or in english the book tower. It's a big tower located at Blandijnberg, Near Sint Pieters plein (is NOT same as sint pieters station) Just log in as an anonymous.
