In Germany there are no speed limits on many highways. So try to get a ride with fast cars. Don't waste time asking truck drivers. Choose the Audi, Mercedes and BMW drivers. Business man actually aren't allowed to take hitchhikers, but a lot of them will take you, as they need someone to talk to :-) on their boring trips. They are driving very fast, but save. Enjoy your ride at up to 150mph (sometimes even more) in the last european country without speed limit.

Don't hesitate to ask people directly for a ride, it works much better than just standing there with a sign or a thumb. Most Germans like to talk in foreign languages. Most of them speak english, some speak french or spanish.

Germany is in Schengen treaty. So, in theory the borders are open. But in practice the German custom officers or sometimes police will start demonstrating the sad traditions of their country to you if you are walking or riding a train with a suitcase or backpack somewhere near the border areas. Specially if you are a long haired man or not aryan by race or not mainstream dressed. If you belong to these subhuman people, you can be 100% sure of these searches if crossing the border from Switzerland. If coming in with a commuter train, they easily take you out of your train to search your belongings, while your train continues without you. Forget any compensation for your ticket. This is just to show that your place should be in a freight train. Some of them act very neutrally, some others behave like louts. No use to complain any higher authorities afterwords, you won´t receive any attention, specially if you write in any other language but German. However, despite German customs and some cops, you will find lots of very interesting and hospitable people in this big country.

If you look like a backpacker, you will often be controlled in european countries. It's no special german behavior and has nothing to do with "aryan" or "subhuman" as said before. The german police is also very strict to Germans if they look like they are smoking marijuana or taking other drugs. Espacially when crossing the borders to other european countries by train, there are a lot of controls. The Schengen treaty doesn't say, that there are no controls, just no usual border controls. The custom controls instead are done in an area of about 50km before and after a border. Special borders are german/dutch border and german/swiss border, as switzerland and the netherlands are known for seeling marijuana. So if you look like someone having fun, you are probable controlled. Cops aren't funny :-)

Germany is a great country for hitchhiking. Just make sure you get on the Autobahn!

In Germany there are no speed limits on many highways. So you might first want to try to get a ride with fast cars before asking truck drivers!

License plates

In Germany license plates start with an abbreviation of the region where the car is registered. So look out for number plates starting with B if you're hitching to Berlin!

See German car number plates and List of abbreviations used (in German) on Wikipedia for more information.

Border crossings
