Groningen a province and the biggest city in the north of the Netherlands.

Hitching Out

South towards Assen

There is a liftershalte, a spot for hitchhiking, at the Emmaviaduct, the road to the A28, 200 meter westwards of Central Station, in the direction of Assen.

West towards Joure

The liftershalte is also fine if you are going West.

East towards Germany

Hitching east towards Germany is harder since there's no obvious place to start hitching. Probably the best is the from traffic light at the crossing of the Europaweg and the Sontweg (close to Ikea). There's a bus stop right after the traffic lights, so people can stop for you. Since the city changed the howl motorway south-east it might be better to go walkin a bit. Pass the Ikea and follow the road than you will meet the highway, follow it left and there will be quiet a good spot, however it is industrial zone so not recommmandable in the night or weekend or go right wihich I haven`t tried yet but should be better. People heading east usually don't go very long distance, so you are likely to end up at the border crossing after a few rides. It's possible to get here directly by train, as is described below.

In weekends you could consider to hitch to Winschoten instead and try to get a hitch there, since a lot of Germans go shopping in Winschoten.

Alternatively you can take the train (sometimes without a ticket, as they don't always check) to Nieuweschans and start hitchhiking on the border service station a short walk away. This is a place where you are likely to end up anyway. Just after the border the roads splits, and there aren't any service stations for a long time, so this is the last chance to get a good ride. Look on google maps how to reach the service station. There is a bridge going to the other side of the road.

Stranded?!

Noorderhaven

If you get stuck in Groningen you can stay at the 'Santana' 24-hour bar, but they might get you to buy a drink once in a while. It's right in the centre by the market place.
