Hitching Out

South towards Assen

There is a liftershalte, a spot for hitchhiking, at the Emmaviaduct, the road to the A28, 200 meter westwards of Central Station, in the direction of Assen.

East towards Germany

Hitching east towards Germany is harder since there's no obvious place to start hitching. Probably the best is the from traffic light at the crossing of the Europaweg and the Sontweg (close to Ikea). There's a bus stop right after the traffic lights, so people can stop for you. Cars can, however, still go to the South/West, so it might take some time to get away. People heading east usually don't go very long distance, so you are likely to end up at the border crossing after a few rides. It's possible to get here directly by train, as is described below.

In weekends you could consider to hitch to Winschoten instead and try to get a hitch there, since a lot of Germans go shopping in Winschoten.

Alternatively you can take the train to Nieuweschans and start hitchhiking on the border service station. This is a place where you are likely to end up anyway. Just after the border the roads splits, and there aren't any service stations for a long time, so this is the last chance to get a good ride. Look on google maps how to reach the service station. There is a bridge going to the other side of the road.

Other information

  • Two free internet terminals can be found at the main station.
  • The local banks do free coffee and sometimes cookies.
  • The local 'Lefier' (jobcentre) does free and has jars of chocolates and mints.
  • The local art school has access to a microwave (and internet if you borrow someone's log-in!)
