Catch a bus well out of town (like many Latin American cities, Guayaquil is surrounded by a peripheral ring of slums) and beyond the the urban area to catch a ride. For as cheap as buses are, you may as well get an hour or so out of town to avoid long waits in dangerous suburbs. Also, don't use taxis to get around town unless you personally know the driverMany drivers are accomplices to thugs who will do a kidnapping express and take you on what is locally known as "paseo millonario"-- a trip to every ATM until your account is drained. It's a fun city to party in, but only accompanied by trusted locals.
