Hitchhiking Zine is an idea by Zac Stewart

Goal

  • Create a DIY travel 'zine guide, Compact

Format

In order to give the zine a personal feel, I think that all articles and "descriptive" parts should be written individually. Of course hitching information, places to sleep and eat, etc should come straight from the Wiki, but if someone has something cool to say about a particular city or whatever, they should be allowed to say it without having it "wikified" and edited to uniformity. That would also give us a good opportunity to give individual writers some credit so that it adds more personality to the zine. Zactalk 21:48, 29 November 2006 (CET)

What gets included?

We need to decide the scope of the zine first. Global, continental, or just a select few countries? After we have that decided we can decide what gets included within that scope. Should we follow the norm and inlcude major cities, or should we do something completely odd and exclude every capital? If we have our scope decided we can work out a system of nominations and then vote to slim it down to 3-5 cities per country or something.

Who wants to help

Publishing

Zac is thinking 50 sheets, center folded. Standard photocopy zine format. "I would want to do it for non-profit of course. Hitchhikers don't have money for guides! If you're interested, I have a little experience with zine pressing and we could mail them out for like $2 a peice or something to help fund this site further and the pressing of the zines. Just let me know." Another option is Lulu.

Salman recommends offering up a free PDF format online with the possibility to donate (using PayPal, for example). A mail version could be sent for $2, but in the spirit of hitchhiking it's nice to have the free option.
