Near the metro station "Ciudad de los Ángeles" is a petrol station that is a fairly good spot to start from. This same road (Av. de Andalucia) leads South, toward the entrance to the Autovía del Sur, which goes to Córdoba and Algeciras. Unfortunately, along Av. de Andalucia, there is no emergency stopping lane, and thus, cars have no space to stop and pull over for hitchhikers (even at the bus stops!). However, there are many traffic lights that allow vehicles the opportunity to slow down and stop. Not far from the entrance to the autovía (maybe only about 5 or 10 km down) is another petrol station. So, you don´t even hypothetically need to find a ride that is going ver far from this point because you can simlpy ask to be dropped at the next petrol station on the Autovía del Sur.

Madrid [1] is the capital of Spain. Madrid has a very extensive and inexpensive well-connected metro system that can help you get in and out of the city.

Hitching out

South toward Córdoba, Algeciras

East toward Valencia

Take the metro 9 direction Arganda del Rey (it costs 1 euro for regular zone ticket + 1 euro for extra zone, you have to buy 2 different tickets), and stop at Rivas Vaciamadrid.

Go out of the station, on the right pass under the bridge to the roundabout. You'll see some steps that lead to a bridge over the motorway, on the left there is a petrol station + an motorway entry. Combine sign + asking people. And be patient, it's Spain you know ;-)

Northeast towards Zaragoza, Barcelona

Hitchhiking between Madrid and Barcelona is fairly easy. Go to Guadalajara, you can go by train (cercanias) or by bus, it is 50 km away and costs 4 euros. Then take a bus to Taracena, it is a small village a few km from Guadalajara, from there you can get to a petrol station next to a bar restaurant, already on the motorway towards Zaragoza and Barcelona. If people are not going too far, try to get a lift to the next gas station, 15 km away, much bigger and with many trucks.

Caro Hitchhiking out of Madrid

San Fernando hitch point. It's cheaper to just get the train from Atocha to station San Fernando which is nearby Madrid. Behind the San Fernando train station there is an entrance on the motorway where you can easily hitchhike from. I really liked the spot because it's a few kilometers away from the landing track of the Barajas airport and you can see/take pictures of airplanes while they are headed for landing ( 50-100 meters from ground ). The train ticket to San Fernando costs 1.45 euro.

Attention: The San Fernando station is on the line towards Alcala de Henares or Guadalajara. Currently its served by local trains in the Atocha Renfe train station on platform 3.

North towards Burgos, Basque Country, Bordeaux

Take a metro to the station Pinar de Chamartín (1 euro). Walk on the calle Arturo Soria, cross the M-11, follow the Camino de la Fuente de la Mora, then turn left in the avenudo de la Manotera. It's an upper-class office area full of good-looking young people driving Mini and BMW 120d. There is a Cepsa petrol station on the left 300 meters further, but Grégoire didn't find it very welcoming and preferred to stick his thumb out at the end of the street, where he got a ride to another petrol station further on the A1 30 minutes later. The spot is directly in the sun, so it's also a perfect place to get suntanned in the middle of the Winter if you hitchhike between 10am and 4pm.

West towards Portugal

Take metro line 6 to the station Alto de Extremadura and then go to the petrol station on the street Avenida de Portugal, which is the A5 highway. From there search for a lift at least to another petrol station at 48 km down the A5.
