New Athos

New Athos (Abkhaz: Афон Ҿыц, Afon Ch'yts; Georgian: ახალი ათონი, Akhali Atoni; Russian: Новый Афон, Novy Afon) is a town in Abkhazia, situated some 22 km from Aqwa by the shores of the Black Sea. New Athos Cave is one of the tourist attractions of Abkhazia.

Be sure to ask about Tri Kotla, around 3-4km away from the centre - a beautiful nature spot!

Hitching Out

All directions

Along the main road, you can literally hitchhike everywhere where space to stop is available. Traffic goes mainly south towards Aqwa or north towards Gudauta. Usual waiting time is less than a minute.

Sleeping

Some 500m south of the main central square along the road, just behind the somewhat broken Militia building , young travelers can be found camping directly at the beach. It's also simple to just hang out near the main square and talk to locals, which will most likely result in being invited to camp in people's gardens. Otherwise, just ask locals at some houses near the beach, as they usually rent rooms to travelers and tourists for xxx rouble a night
