If you want to go south-east on the E6 take metro line 3 to "Mortensrud" and get off at the last station, then cross the bridge over metro track and walk for about 300 meters. You will enter petrol station on motorway E6. Ask drivers there. Very good spot! Also the trash is worth checking for a pre-hitch dive. Nikkou found tons of bagels there in Jul 2016.

The best place to hitch hike is the bus station down the road described beneath. From the petrol station there is a road to the right that leads to a small path on the right side where the bus station is. It's visible from the petrol station.

Either ask drivers there, hitchhike on the busstop on the motorway just 100 meters next to the gasstation, on the onramp itself, or on the busstop before the onramp. Basically just go there and find your favorite way to find a ride going south.

Peregrine had luck finding a ride going all the way to the Swedish border within 20 minutes from the motorway on-ramp next to the petrol station near Mortensrud.  However, the women driving the vehicle cautioned that they have seen many people standing there  trying to get rides unsuccessfully and that it is quite dangerous with such a short on ramp so close to the 80 km/h interstate -  that Peregrine should notify the source of their information that there is a much safer bus stop to hitch from just down the road.  Looking more carefully you will find that going south on E6 away from this petrol station, maybe 300 meters, there is in fact a bus stop that may be a better idea...however with the speed of the traffic, maybe only during rush hour...

You can also take the regional train going "Ski" and get off at "Nordstrand" station, one stop after Oslo-S. Once at Nordstrand, turn left and go down the little hill. The large road with a lot of traffic is the E18. You can walk about 5-10 minutes in the direction of Oslo (turning right) to the Ulvøya Island crossroad. There is a bus stop right after a traffic light and you can get picked up quite easily. Have a sign to make sure you get on to the right road.

Alternatively you may want to try Esso petrol station (diesel is cheaper there so lots of people fills up there and other advantage is there is a MC D. right next to it). To get there, take subway to Hellerud, turn right into Smalvollveien and walk till you get to Esso. Some might find useful to know that there seem to be fewer ticket controls on that line.

Hitchhiking out

Hitching out of Oslo is difficult from the city center. There are several motorway entrances behind the tunnel. The further outside the city you are, the easier it gets.

North towards Trondheim E 6

The trip to Trondheim takes one day.

Around IKEA (Furuset) is an area where most trucks start. There is a "Statoil" petrol station on the E6 direction North which can be reached walking from metro station "Trosterud", East of the centre (lines 1 or 2, direction Ellingsrudåsen). The metro in Oslo is called the T. From the stop Trosterud you go out, to the left, left again down the hill, over the footbridge and continue down and you are behind the station. You can also get there for free, taking the IKEA bus going once per hour from Dronningsgate near the main station directly to IKEA. From there you can walk back to the street, turn left (south-west) turn left at the second roundabout and then cross the E6. The Statoil station then is to your left and can be reached by the next street on your left.

abstorz was able to hitch a ride onto the motorway behind the tunnel in the area of Etterstad, but it can't be bad to get even further out of the city. Once on the motorway everything went fine.

South towards Göteborg E 6 and east towards Stockholm E 18

Option 1 - Mortensrud

Take metro line 3 to "Mortensrud" and get off at the last station, then cross the bridge over metro track and walk for about 300 meters. You will enter petrol station on motorway E6. Either ask drivers there, hitchhike on the busstop on the motorway just 100 meters next to the gasstation, on the onramp itself, or on the busstop before the onramp. Basically just go there and find your favorite way to find a ride going south.

Option 2 - Hellerud

You may want to try Esso petrol station (diesel is cheaper there so lots of people fills up there and other advantage is there is a MC D. right next to it). To get there, take subway to Hellerud, turn right into Smalvollveien and walk till you get to Esso. Some might find useful to know that there seem to be fewer ticket controls on that line.

Option 3 - From Ulvøybrua (closer to the city than the other ones)

This spot is before the road turns into a motorway, you may benefit from a sign here, To get here take one of the following buses 81A, 83, 85, 500, T9, 81B to the stop Ulvøybrua and hitchhike either where cars pull into the bridge or are coming out from the bridge (the latter may be better but that is up to different hitchhikers to decide for themselves)

West towards Bergen

Option 1 - Where the motorway ended - there is bus 200 that goes from the City, you can catch it to the stop Avtjerna and hitch from the bustop. All motorway has ended and it is just country road all the way to Bergen. The con with this option is that it the bus only goes once an hour (and once every 2 hours on sunday). But if you just miss the bus you can change to option 2 or 3 instead of waiting for the next one.

Option 2 - Closer to the city on a onramp - 10 minutes walking Catch a train to Sandvika, when you get off the train walk in the direction the train was moving for 100 meters, turn right and then left on the bigger road (Elias Smiths Vej), follow the road until a roundabout and turn right, and you will see the entrance to the motorway.

Option 3 - Far out of the city - Take the train to "Honefoss", walk up the hill and out to the road, and there is an information point where it's easy for drivers to pull in- all traffic from Oslo to Bergen goes past this point.

Option 4 - Petrol station near the city.

There is a Petrol Station on the Drammensvein heading west (next to the Mercedes and BMW buildings). Many people leaving Oslo in the morning to go to the surrounding suburbs for work stop there for petrol. You can reach it by walking from the city center (around 4 km on a footpath along the Drammensvein) or by Bus (TE 1,4,8, 10 or 14 till Martim). from here you can easily ask drivers if they are going to one of the spots mentioned above. Remember that most cars will not be going very far.

Hitching In

From Oslo (Rygge) Airport

Oslo (Rygge) is an airport located about 75 km South of Oslo, on the E6 direction Göteborg. To reach Oslo via HH, you simple need a sign for Oslo and you can either hitch from the airport or walk about 1.5 km to (North direction, along the motorway) the Rygge on-ramp where local traffic passes at the roundabout. The first petrol station is a few kilometres North, around Moss. From there it's rather easy to get a direct ride to Oslo.

Yes, the airport is small, so traffic is light. When you come out of the terminal building; the motorway in front of you is the E6, and Oslo (North) is to the right. I walked the one mile along the airport service road (hitching without success)and then hitched from the roundabout.

Or you can just stand at the end of the car park building on the slip road (turn right out of terminal building and walk until you reach the end of the building). I just hitched to Oslo city centre in one lift (by holding up an 'Oslo' sign). The first car stopped. Or you can ask people at the airport if they're going to Oslo. My brother did this and got a lift with the first person he asked.

I was heading East to Töcksfors (just over the Swedish border on the E18) so got dropped at the junction of the 151 near the town of Son and continued East from there. Not the easiest hitch (4 hours) but still much quicker than getting the airport bus into Oslo and then the Stockholm bus back out to Töcksfors. I found drivers friendly, willing to go a little out of their way, and everyone spoke good English.

From Oslo (Torp) Airport

Oslo (Torp) is an airport located about 115 km South of Oslo, on the E18 direction Kristiansand.

From Oslo (Gardermoen) Airport

Oslo (Gardermoen) (OSL) Airport is located around 50 km North of Oslo, near E6 towards Lillehammer.

To reach Oslo, simply go to the multi-storey car park which is adjacent to the terminal and then follow arrows to the exit. Then head to the gates where drivers pay for the parking, it's at the exit from the car park area. Stand right behind these gates. Payment takes a couple of whiles and drivers should have the time to notice you, there's also a plenty of place for them to stop to pick you up.

Public Transportation

It's very easy and relaxed to get into the subway for free. At least one hitchhiker rode for more than a week on bus, tram and subway without ever buying a ticket. If you get busted, just choose to pay later, give a false address and you will never hear from them again.

The ticket is 30 kr. Note that you can buy it on the train (for 50 kr if you buy it from a person instead of the machine) and they might not check, but it's almost impossible to dodge on regional trains.

Other Useful Info

Free luggage storage: There are free lockers in the main Oslo library if you want to store luggage for free (you need a ten kroner coin, which you'll get back after).

Also in USE IT on Møllergata 3, in the very centre, you can find free luggage storage, free wi-fi, free coffea and frew condoms.

CAMPING: To the east of Oslo there is an extremely large and beautiful nature-reserve called Østmarka[1]. The park has extensive hiking trails, numerous lakes with fishing and swimming, and a minimal amount of development. When I was there at the height of summer, it was never crowded if not almost completely deserted. Camping in the park is safe, free and legal and you could spend days exploring it. Best of all it's accessible from the T-bane and, thus, connected to downtown Oslo. Near the Trosterud station there's an entrance to the Lutvann Lake[2] recreation area within the park. When you leave the station, follow the paved pedestrian road to the left just a few meters. There will be another paved road/bike path going up the hill to your right. Follow this all the way up. You will reach a cluster of apartment buildings. Keep following the asphalt path. It will end in a small parking lot and a raised basketball court I think. At this point turn right and follow the car-road. Turn left just past the basketball court and follow this road as it veers up and to the right, I think it's called Lutvannsveien. You will pass a military base and the entrance to the park is another 50 meters or so past that. The lake itself is another 5-10 minute walk inside the park, just follow the big gravel path. All told it's about a 20-30 minute hike from the station. For hitching this spot is ideal because it's also very close to the E6 going north. There's directions to hitching spots from Trosterud at the top of this page. If you are hungry the T-bane stop before Trosterud which is Haugerud has a remi supermarket opposite it which is nice for dumpster diving.

Another good spot for wild camping is Ekeberg park, very close to the centre (20 min walking otherwise tramway 18 and 19 very easily blackridable) with an amazing view over the town and safe, deserted, free and legal as well (just some runners and humans with their canine owners in the morning). There is also a paying camping inside it where you can sneak inside to have a free shower. E6 and E18 are at a walking distance. The squat called "Blå" next to the culture house "housemania" in the city centre has a guest room with 6 places. It's worth asking for sure even if often it's full and it is not liked nor allowed to sleep on the floor.
