Passau is a city in Bavaria, Germany at the border to Austria, where the rivers Donau, Inn and Ilz merge.

The czech-german border region sees many police controls of cars looking for drug traffickers and smugglers. Some hitchers may want to take this into account for personal safety.

Hitchhiking out

In direction East and West on A3

Best spot to catch a ride is Donautal motorway petrol station, where you can get lifts either in direction Austria (East) or Germany (West). This petrol station is located on A3 just outside of Passau.

Reaching Donautal

By bus from the central station Options - see timetables at www.bayern-fahrplan.de

  • Bus line 10, direction Schalding r. d. D.\nüber HBF - Neustift until stop "Hoffeldweg". Be careful here to not go to "l. d. D." because that way you will get dropped off on the wrong side of the river.
  • Bus line 8, direction Königschalding to stops "Königschalding" or "Dr Winkelhofer Straße"
  • Bus line 9, direction Königschalding to final stop "Königschalding"

Get off at Hoffeldweg and follow the road for another 100 meters. You should be directly below the autobahn bridge. Take a left on the street, which goes up the hill directly under the bridge until the road splits. If you want to hitchhike in direction West, you should take the left road and you will get to Donautal Ost petrol station. If you want to catch a ride in direction East, take the right road and you will get to Donautal West petrol station. It should be quite easy to find a ride in either direction.
