El Chalten has many rich vacation goers but nearly every vehicle coming out of the town is packed with people. Do not expect to get picked up. The only other way out of town is by a bus which costs USD$40(?) to El Calafate. Going to El Chalten is worth it, but '''will''' be expensive.

Patagonia is a remote, vast region in South America. It is in the southernmost part of the continent, mostly in Argentina and partially in Chile.

Hitchhiking on ruta 40 is not possible south of Perito Moreno/Los Antiguos. The road is possibly one of the most remote on earth--every motorist will stop but only to tell you that it's not possible. The government is in the process of paving this road. If so, hitchhiking conditions may change.
