European Hitchhiking Day Leads Hundreds of Hitchhikers to Paris

On the 8th of August hundreds of hitchhikers team up to hitchhike to Paris to promote the idea of hitchhiking. Participants are hitchhiking from as far as Iran, Russia and Finland. Other places of departure are Utrecht, Brussels, Berlin, Barcelona, Geneva, Rome, Athens, Istanbul, Budapest, Prague, and many more.

This project shows that the hitchhiking community is still very much alive. Every year thousands of people travel all over the world hitchhiking and in many countries it is still a common way of getting around. This is the first Hitchhiking day of this kind. It wants to let the public know it could be very interesting to pick up a hitchhiker, share their car and exchange stories.

"Hitchhiking is awesome! I always travel like this and it is a great way to meet random people and hear their stories. It is great to see how helpful people can be. Sometimes they even bring you as far as your frontdoor or they invite you over for dinner", says Fabrice Renuci, an organiser of the event and who will be departing from Budapest.

One of the participants set the goal to visit all European capitals before arriving in Paris on the 8th of August. When a retired couple from Australia heard about this idea they decided to also take part in this adventure during their European trip.

The European Hitchhiking Day will also be documented. There are at least five teams of hitchhikers with filmcamera's joining the tour, filming their adventures from wherever to Paris. Other participants will be combining this with their photos, journals, short movies, radio-recordings, and other art-forms to express their experiences, bringing together one joint expression of their love for this way of travel.

Note for journalists: You are free to join the European Hitchhiking Day. We can let you team up with experienced hitchhikers, there are prepatory meetings that you can come to [place, time], you can follow a hitchhiker who will travel from far, or we can organise a group of people you can call during the day.
