Slovakia seems not to be so easy. It is best to directly ask at gas stations. Some, but not many, speak English or German. Russian is more widely understood, but not necessarily liked.

Young people can speak english and it's not so bad with english in bigger towns. Of course in villages it can become difficult to understand each other. You can find a lot of offers for hitchhikers at stopar.sk (available in English).
