Slovenia is a country in Southern Europe. It is a member state of the European Union as well as the Schengen Agreement. Hitchhiking used to be more common here in the past, but today people aren´t used to hitchikers it is still very doable and they could be suprised safe. Drivers are happy to see a hitchhiker and will tell you. But stillstories, how normal it used to be, hitchiking is quite possible and safewhen they were young. You will find that people People in Slovenia mostly speak English quite goodwell (<60 yrs), German language and Italian(on the cost) can also come in handy.
Hitchiking with close to highways will take you far and fast, but if you have enough time, use it to hitchhike on the small roads. Slovenia can offer you a lot to see on its small areaterritory. Geographic landscapes change fast and you can get from the edge foot of the highest mountain (Triglav, 2864m) Alps to the Adriatic sea in a cca. 2 hour drive)about 3h ride, or to Pannonian basin in 5h.
From the capital, Ljubljana, it is possible to easily hitchhike to the north/east (Maribor, Austria), north/west (Jesenice ,Austria), to the south (Croatia, Zagreb) and to the west (Postojna, Italy). It is the best to use highways entrances, and to hold a sign marking your destination. Hitchhiking in the rural areas is even easier, and a ride can be found even in the smallest roads. Highways are always in a good condition, there are also service areas on the motorway.
At motorway From the capital city Ljubljana, it is easy to hitchhike to the north-east (Maribor, Celje, Vienna, Graz (Austria), Hungary), north-west (Jesenice, Bled, Villach, Salzburg (Austria), Germany), south-east (Zagreb (Croatia)) and south-west (Postojna, Koper, Italy). Your best choice would be to use highway entrances, and to hold a sign marking your destination. For more info, check out the page Hitchwiki Ljubljana.Hitchhiking in the rural areas is even easier, and it is possible to get a pick even on the smallest roads. Highways are always in a good condition, there are also service areason the motorway. The highway rest stops, standing with a sign seems to work better than asking people, especially if you don't speak Slovenian.

Border Crossings
Sometimes drivers Since Slovenia is a part of Schengen, borders with Austria, Hungary and Italy are not that friendly and they don't wish to take a problem. Usually you abroadjust pass them without stopping, but sometimes they even leave you just before the border crossing. But don't worry! If you are going to Italy (Trieste, Venice), your best option is to hitchhike till police would stop the border city (Sezana) vehicles and from there take a bus ask for documents (€1.90) till the Italian village of Villa Opicina. From there you can take plenty of buses to Trst (TriesteID is enough for EU citizens) and continue to Venice. From begining of December 2011. there It is no train from Sežana to Villa Opicina or any other connection from Slovenia to Italy.Reference. Border more strict on the Croatian border, because Cro is also not a problem anymore, because there is schengen rule and no border crossings any morepart of Schengen yet. If you want to hitchike to Trieste or further to Italy, walk on main road left from train station towards BTC signNow let's hope, it changes soon:) Don't forget that Croatia and try to catch a ride to Trieste or Villa Opicina. This is not best hitchhiking spotHungary don't use Euro(€) as their currencies, but I didnt found betterCroatian Kuna and Hungarian Forint when leaving the country.--Cro gavran 22:11, 21 April 2012 (CEST)
If you are going want to Zagrebpass the border, and you were not lucky enough to but get a direct ridepick to towns or villages close, try to get to a city called Brezice. From there you can take either a bus trains or a local train busses to the border village called Dobova, from which there pass it. It is every two hours a cheap local train to Zagreb (€1.50)not very expensive.
Crossing from Austria to Slovenia https://www.slo-zeleznice.si/en/passenger-transport/travelling-abroad If The link above takes you donto the 't get a ride to Slovenian Railways page, where you can see all about the train connections with neighbour countries (usually from Ljubljana), there as well as local lines. It is a point some 60km before ljubljana where trucks are weighed and presumably also the old border check point was in place. Get last way out here and if you can hitch all the cars and possibly even get a ride to Croatia / Serbia as stuck somewhere. (stay strong<3) Of course, youcan always use Flixbus or any other bus line too. ll be catching all the traffic coming from Austria. Jass received a ride in September 2012 after 5 minutes of waiting to eastern Croatia AUSTRIA (Jesenice, Kranjska gora, Dravograd, Slovenj Gradec, Maribor), CROATIA (Brežice, Krško, Dobova, Piran, Črnomelj, Ptuj), HUNGARY (Murska Sobota, Lendava, Hodoš) and ITALY (but should have exited in Zagreb as there is little traffic on any rest station in CroatiaNova Gorica, Sežana, Koper, Bovec, Vipava).
Crossing from Slovenia to Austria :
Border crossing is very luxurious hitching spot, as the traffic slows down to about 10km/h (in because of the afternoon at leastpay toll for Karavanke tunnel, when there is a lot of traffic) so the whole highway sees you clearly. There is also plenty of space for drivers to pick you up.
