In the southern part of the city there's a little hill called the Freudenberg. It's quite known amongst locals for Drei Weiheren, that is several artificial ponds which one can enjoy free baths in. The hill and the ponds are within walking distance from the highway (ask locals for directions if necessary) and in my book this particular place might actually be worth getting dropped off in St. Gallen if you happen to pass through in the afternoon, not knowing where to spend the night.

Not as much for the ponds - there's way better lakes in Switzerland - but for the view over town and Lake Constance from atop the Freudenberg and the possibility to sleep right up there on the meadows, undisturbed and peacefully (stargazing and morning swim in the ponds included). You can also have a campfire and there's public BBQs.

Applications-office.png This article is a stub. This means that the information available to us is obviously insufficient. In these places little information is available or the description is severely outdated. If you have been there, whether hitchhiking, for travel or as part of an organized tour − be sure to extend this article!

Hitching Out

West towards Zürich, Bern or Basel

To hitch out towards Zurich, Berne or Basel in westerly direction, there's a spot at the Sankt Fiden Exit. There is a bridge over the highway from where a driveway is going down to meet the highway. So you can just stand on the upper end of that driveway and have your lift use the part of it on which the road coming from one direction (left, seen from the driveway) is joining the main track. Take bus 1, 4, or 7 direction Stephanshorn, Guggeinen, resp. Neudorf. Get out at the St. Fiden stop and walk to the bridge.

East towards (St. Margrethen, Bregenz, Austria, Germany)

Getting out

To hitch east, use the entrance of the same name, St.Fiden, just the other direction. It is near the hospital, just ask people for the way there and walk towards the on-ramp. Just before the highway officaly begins (and whence it becomes illegal, see the big green sign) there's a turn-off with almost no traffic so standing there you'll be easily seen by cars. Note that there's not gonna be that much traffic and most cars will be local, most likely going to the border town of St. Margrethen.

Border

Once you found a lift to St. Margrethen ask your driver to drop you off at the border crossing between Switzerland and Austria. Hitching on from there is easy.

Sleeping

In the southern part of the city, there's a little hill called the Freudenberg. It's quite known amongst locals for the Drei Weiheren, several artificial ponds for free swimming.
