Hello, I propose to link the maps section to the article Maps#Germany and update the list there. It is easier to maintain one list instead of two. Does anybody mind? Regards --Kriechstrom 10:42, 27 January 2012 (CET)

Hello, I found the Germany article to become a bit cluttered because many informations concerning one topic were added at different places. Thus I restructured it a bit in the hope that the overview is better now. I also added some more signs to make the first time hitchhiking in Germany easier. Hope it is fine for all. Please tell me here if I missed something. Thanks, best regards --Kriechstrom 12:57, 1 February 2012 (CET)

The word autobahn
I tried to unify the highway/motorway differences but soon figured out that it's not so easy since I would like people speaking BE and AE to understand it. I found some discussions in a German dictionary community about this and as native speakers there suggested that the word autobahn has indeed been found in British and American English dictionaries I introduced the word here once in the beginning and used it afterwards. Does anybody mind? --Kriechstrom 12:57, 1 February 2012 (CET)

Some other stuff I'd like to change:
 +
* I found out that for distances above 200 km in Germany my average speed (door to door) almost always is 60 km/h to 70 km/h. This helps planning a lot. Can someone verify?
 +
: Seems realistic to me. My rule of thumb was: 50 km/h is bad day, 100 km/h is very good. On almost all of my trips I am between that. Then again, Prino claims an average of about 114 km/h. --MrTweek 14:18, 1 February 2012 (CET)
 +
* I agree that the service station restaurants are expensive but I do not agree that the food quality is low. It is average sometimes when it's just pre-fabricated food. But low food quality for me means bad hygiene or really bad taste and that's not the case.
 +
: agreed. Also, often there's a McDonalds or BurgerKing and they obviously have the same prices and quality as everywhere. --MrTweek 14:18, 1 February 2012 (CET)
 +
* When googling German rest areas (not service stations) I found some services promoting errrr... opportunities to meet people with certain interests there. I'm sure it's nothing the average hitchhiker is looking for. As I rarely get dropped off at rest areas I have no clue about this. Has anybody had troubles with this? Should we add it to the rest area infos?
 +
: I heard of this but never encountered anything like that (except for some prostitutes). I think there are a few certain rest areas that are used for other purposes. Anyway, I think these people probably hide in the bushes, so this shouldn't pose an issue for anyone. We can still mention it, of course. --MrTweek 14:18, 1 February 2012 (CET)
 +
* I plan to add some information about communication (like free wifi etc.) and carpooling (might help to get on the highway cheaper than with public transportation). Any further ideas?
 +
: An important info, that we sometimes already have is whether there is a bridge or tunnel to cross to the other side. Also, it might sometimes help to know if/how one can enter/leave the service area on foot (villages, bus stops nearby, etc).

I propose removing the "carpooling" section. Ridesharing isn't hitchhiking, and rideshare sections tend to be spam magnets. CRCulver (talk) 16:35, 6 June 2013 (CEST)

" If coming in with a commuter train, they easily take you out of your train to search your belongings, while your train continues without you. Forget any compensation for your ticket. This is just to show that your place should be in a freight train. Some of them act very neutrally, some others behave like louts. No use to complain any higher authorities afterwords, you won´t receive any attention, specially if you write in any other language but German."

--> bullshit!!

I removed some of it. But if it's bullshit, your rewriting it would be a very welcome addition! :) Guaka 20:21, 24 May 2006 (UTC)

I will try to rewrite it, my english might not be very good, though 84.169.240.66 18:05, 15 July 2006 (UTC)
Don't worry about spelling and stuff like that! It's a wiki! :) Guaka 19:53, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Is it really usual, that custom officers check ones luggage, when travelling from Poland? Although I never travelled there, I can hardly believe that.

I removed the assertion that this will happen at the border to the netherland, because I live close to that border and I know that this is not true.

It is not usual, but it is a border crossing and completely normal if the officers would decide to do so... as they are paid to do so under practical need or pure suspicion, it just therefore can be expected. (ps. what is the upper top section about?) Maplefanta 19:53, 6 November 2007 (CET)
If you are looking for experiences with custom officers at the polish border, mine as always been positive and flashing a canadian passport as always made the prior most aggressive officer, (either polish or german approaching the border by foot on the highway), continue into a fully polite chat...

The last 2 sentences of the border crossing should be re-written, I can't understand them Maplefanta 19:53, 6 November 2007 (CET)

I rewrote it a little and hope that's better now. I'm not sure wether this information is really helpful, because i never had such problems. About the part that I removed: There is no real border to the Netherlands anymore. I crossed it very very often and never saw any custom officers. Even it they are allowed to stop and check people, this just doesn't happen nowadays. Chances for that are much higher in a soccer stadium or on music festivals. --MrTweeksite, wikitalk 20:44, 6 November 2007 (CET)

About the mitgefahren section, mitgefahren is a carsharing website so of course you pay your driver for the service... I must say I do not understand the description made (??)Maplefanta 19:53, 6 November 2007 (CET)

Yeah, you're right. I hardly understood it and found it useless. I usually hitchhike because I don't want to use mitfahrgelegenheit. --MrTweeksite, wikitalk 20:44, 6 November 2007 (CET)
A description of the Mitfahrzentrale website could still exist as it is decent information and quite a possible alternative, but it should simply be described for what it is and its system basically explained instead of doing an appreciation of it. I can try to sketch it out... the previous explanation on the wiki was not telling anything about it at all Maplefanta 20:57, 6 November 2007 (CET)

Last one that modified this page, I can't see the letters you added. In stead of the normal ones, I see just random stuff (nonexistent letters and smudgy characters). Anyone else have this problem. Rolling back modification. TruckThor 23:55, 10 July 2008 (CEST)

This was probably an spam bot. We had some of them before. Seems like they can't handle special characters and break them. I'm not sure, what they are actually trying to do. However, if you see such things again, just revert it ;) --MrTweek 13:53, 11 July 2008 (CEST)

Proposal to increase hitchability of germany

as if you are on the autobahn service stations in germany, waiting times tend to be short and lifts are long and fast. you can very easy make 800 km or more a day. thats why i want to set germanys hitchablity to very-good. counter-arguments? --Quarim 10:39, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

I agreee --MrTweek 13:03, 21 June 2010 (UTC)
I disagree. Germany should be Good.png (good). Yes, hitching on AB-raststaettes is usually fast, it's possible to cross the entire country in 6-10 hours, but in the meanwhile I've got plenty of experiences (Cologne-Nijmegen) where it has taken more time than Amsterdam-Berlin on plenty of occasions... In Bavaria the same. Hitchability shouldn't only be a tool to measure thru-hitching between popular destinations on major, well-frequented motorways, but a general idea how much hassle you're about to experience to get from point A to point B within that country. clint.hotvedt 11:55, 26 June 2010 (UTC)
I agree that hitching in Germany is not always perfect, but in which case can we mark a country to be Verygood.png (very good), then? It should be possible to mark something as Verygood.png (very good), otherwise the category is obsolete. And as far as I can say, Germany is among the best hitching countries. --Kb 16:26, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

The word autobahn

I tried to unify the highway/motorway differences but soon figured out that it's not so easy since I would like people speaking BE and AE to understand it. I found some discussions in a German dictionary community [1][2] about this and as native speakers there suggested that the word autobahn has indeed been found in British and American English dictionaries I introduced the word here once in the beginning and used it afterwards.
