It could be useful to take the article advice written on the Canada page about Winter Hitch-hiking hazard and maybe some other countries are having some too. They could be grouped together on this same page for all Winter Hazardous country or regions: Russia, Scandinavia, Iceland, Canada, Alaska ... :Hi! :) Well== Bug?? ==When linking from other sites or typing on the address bar, it might be good I often get sent to have some cities in there as well. To give an idea to people and to persuade people to add something about cities we dona doublet have yet! - Hello:It's because of the intricacies of <tt>. Before discovering this place for discussion I already filled some boxes eg about Virgin hh, Poland and the Netherlandshtaccess</tt>. On one hand this The CS wiki is a good idea, because it has some (very small) potential linking to become an interesting source of information. However, I am not expecting this at alle. Which does not need to mean anythingg. Any new business usually takes some time - up to three or five years - to make a little bit more than it costs, and so it might be with this initiativehttp://www. As for what I've read it's some kind of starthitchwiki. However, I have doubts about the general neutrality of the content for noworg/Paris. For example - :So I read that a country can be skipped if an attempt to hitchhike there does not succeed. What a bullshit! This may be reasonable for random long distance travellers, however many people who hitchhike do so for very different reasonschecked [http://davidwalsh. For example because they don't have money, because there is name/no public transport and so on. Hitchhiking in the Netherlands "is possible". "It's possible" for some, for others it is easy, not just possible. So, my comment is a very positive one - I hope www-using-htaccess- which tries to say. What is the neutral point of view? Ah, I see that the hitchhikers point of view is wanted. If so, what is a hitchhiker, file some stuff] and what is the hitchhikers point of view? If a non-hitchhiker wanted to hitchhike out of town, what would be his or her point of view? Thathopefully it's allworking fine now. It's an ambitious project Let me know if you're thinking ofencounter any weird redirect errors. All the best with it. Regards Frank Verhart. Note - please don't copy information guaka 18:40, 30 May 2009 (textUTC) from my website. It is copyrighted material that I do not offer for publication elsewhere. PS - I don't like the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
:Hi! Just finished HGttG today :) So I just wanted to write Don't panic! but then I saw you don't like it.
:I'm glad to read your critique and I'll try to do something useful with it!
:One thing though: this is not a business! The AdSense money goes to Wikicities, to which I'm not affiliated. Also, I'm not really the founder: I adopted, or saved thia wiki from a spam death.

- Hey Hitchhikers! Just joined the new hitchhiking wiki here-- whew! there have been a few moves in these last 2 years, hope we are all able to make this a permanent stay here on hitchwiki.org.==Logo update==I contributed to hitchhikingguide.org and hitchhiking.wikia.com but do not feel the need to mark which contributions belong to me within this new wiki. As you will see from my user page, I am creator/webmaster/co-editor of digihitch.com. Some of the information I personally collected for digihitch I will also share here, and as with all hitchhikers I have a ton of info that has not yet been written. As I hitchhike primarily in the USA, I will have most to contribute to that section. (Don:t believe the misinformation found on the web... there are still tens of thousands of hitchhikers in the USA).I -and the digihitch community- would really appreciate it if you cite digihitch.com for all information you collect from there. The website is community-run and has been the hard work of many world hitchhikers for over 5 years. Support our community when possible and all hitchhikers will benefit! I must admit that I was opposed moved to a hitchhiking wiki when Teppo first suggested it to me in April 2005. We at digihitch.com had just launched our [http[project://www.digihitch.com/world/ digihitch WorldLogo update]] section and I believed that all information would be best shared there among registered members (without all the spam maintenance required of a wiki), but since that time I understand the value of a wiki such as this and will attempt to share unbiased contributions where possible.Revel and Roll, Morgan 'Salman' 21:38 01 December 2006 (UTC)
=== Writing style =Mainpage ==I just took the old news out of the mainpage news template. Now there is quite some free space. However, I think it is good to keep the mainpage simple and not too overloaded (and also keep in future just the last 10 site news entries). Any suggestions about what could be added there or how the page could be reordered? I would suggest to move the picture of the now to the left column and also put there a field with the most important content with a symbol (e.g. general info Top Tips, Where, Safety, Signs, First time, Picking up hitchhikers, country info). Maybe one of the design and graphic program gifted people could make some icons for this... It might also be worth to think about which content is important for new people (e.g. move the site news - what is normally for the more frequent users - to the right bottom side... --Alex 19:28, 23 July 2008 (CEST)
:: I was feeling that it would be more interesting and correct also suggest to split fix the 'factual information' of the edit'personnal experience', be buttons in the top box. Looks quite annoying and I guess that the factual information about a hitching spot comes first while the personnal ones would come in a 'this box anyway doesn't need much editing, so maybe we should set it to 'different paragraph which follows'admin edit only. It would give a more professionnal look to the cities or country pages instead of having to read the subjective point of view of one person everytimeNews, which is interestingpics, but the factual reading is usually providing a straight to the point information that is often quickly neededevents etc. Having a little code about how to make it would enhance then can still be edited through the whole projecttemplates, of course. == Overview ==- For me::: agree, it always takes to long to find a specific country on the mainpage (especially doesn't make much sense since these boxes are not much edited in europe), because countries, continent-parts and cities are mixed. I would suggest removing at least the cities first place and maybe also as you say, the continent-parts (I think it's more likely that people are looking for a specific country). Does other boxes can still be edited by anyone agree with me? :) through the templates --MrTweekRobino 1512:4145, 3 December 2006 18 August 2008 (CETCEST)
:Yeahwanted to propose to rearrange the boxes, one for wiki-news, one for general news, one for events, one for stories (upcoming), and one for 3 (through rss) most recent (planet) blogs. I think so too. It's good to have cities the general news should be on the main page to encourage developmenttop (left), then events, but maybe for then stories. == Errors that need to be fixed Language of place name ==
Can we set some standards for place names? An example, what to use for Brugge (I just bumped into it)? It's now to be found under Bruges, which I think is wrong. Cities should be put under the name they are known in the country they are and if necessary there can be a redirection page for foreign- Sorrylanguage versions of the name.:I think we already had that discussion a long time ago, and agreed to use the English names, wherever they are common. This seemed most logical for an English-speaking wiki. In general, we try to stick to wikipedia's standards for that. I hit edit instead think it's not so much of add commentan issue, because we always try to set redirects for all possible languages, so everyone will always find what one's looking for. (Although we are not really consequent, like at Köln). :Thanks Just wondering about the desirability to work out the economic aspect of hitchhiking. Wechner indicated finance as one the four main motivations for your contributions! hitchhiking, the other one being adventure, environment and social sharing [http:When you log //bernd.wechner.info/Hitchhiking/Suite101/Article/?03]. The incentive to this question at the moment is mainly the current economic crisis that is in you can "move" pages execution among banks, governments, public and business that in all likeliness will last for many many years to another titlecome, mostly in Northern America and Europe. That way Following the recent news there will also seems to be a redirect. Now both Kyiv and Kiev point already some reason to the same article.:Something wrong with HHGTG? Nah. Or do you mean Hitchhiker's Guide be concerned (which applies mostly to Hitchhikingpeople who are in debt). WellIn other words - would economic recession / depression increase again the number of hitchhikers, I think which in the title is a bit long. But maybe itUS and Europe basicly 's good. Maybe itIE's just because of my resolution yet (1024i'm working with OSX) but the pictures block out all text in the left column making it all drop down below the picture. Anyway, go for it, Mikael! --Platschi 20:47, 31 May 2010 (UTC):: I love it :) If youwant, just install it to Hitchwiki:Start Page --MrTweek 13:58, 23 August 2010 (UTC) == Updated PNGs == I're going deeper into ve updated a whole bunch of PNGs with versions that were generated directly from the hitchhiking stuff SVG from Wikipedia (like Boats, Planes, Trainswith the GIMP).Height is around 400 pixels (or less) to keep the PNGs from adding dithered colors.Resulting PNGs were optimized with htm#pngout PNGOUT  So far I've done all flags for the countries I have visited. Flags for the additional nationalities of drivers that gave me rides will follow (in a future) Prino 13:28, 23 August 2010 (UTC): By the news can way, it should be more visible possible to upload SVGs here. That way we could completely avoid any conversion problems. --MrTweek 13:56, 23 August 2010 (UTC)::The File upload page does not seem to see that thereallow .SVG, but I haven's activity.t tried it.However, you must be aware that older browsers do not support .SVG files and I'm not sure if one of the newer (aka the piece of junk from M$) etcones does. Also , if I try to upload Flag_of_the_Netherlands.svg I get the list following message: "# A file with this name exists already, please check File:Flag of countries the Netherlands.svg if you are not sure if you want to change it." Clicking on the link will go to a page that tells me "This file is from a bit annoyingshared repository and may be used by other projects. The description on its file description page there is shown below" And it doesn't show up in Special:ListFiles, so how does the link to Wikimedia Commons work? Another problem is of course the case-sensitivity, if I try to upload "Flag_of_The_Netherlands.svg", the system will happily let me do so. Prino 19:46, we can add some more new countries 23 August 2010 (thanks UTC) : Also, I wonder what the reason is, to re-upload images in the same resolution? They look completely the same for me. --MrTweek ;14:15, 23 August 2010 (UTC) ) like Brunei etc. For that ::The PNGs I uploaded are exactly the list same, but PNGOUT is getting bigger and biggercapable of compressing them significantly better in many cases, and someday it will be impossible to list all 192+ states which should save some bandwidth... Look at some of the world there bigger files I replaced in the changelog! Prino 19:23, 23 August 2010 (UTC) Maybe we   : Hmm, ok. First of all: Hitchwiki is linked to wikimedia commons. That means, you can track just use any file uploaded to wikimedia commons here. And that is also the list more downreason for your error message: If you upload a file, that is also uploaded to wikimedia commons, you would replace it locally. This is fine, you can do that. What about It doesn't make much sense to upload the picturessame file again, though. hm: It doesn't really matter wether a browser supports svg.The wiki renders them to png pr jpg anyway. But it can render them in a much better quality, no matter which size they will have. no ideaSo, in general, SVG is always better than PNG or JPG, but currently not always possible.: I think bandwith is not so much of an issue nowadays. All modern browsers support on-the-fly-compression anyway, so it's will probably not the best solutionmake any difference at all.
