If you are in a big hurry because your visa expires, a taxi from the train station will take you to the border. When we asked for prices they started in 100 $ for two people but fastly came down to 60$. The police said it would be possible to get it for 40$ but we did not insist and hitchhiked instead. Just make sure they will really take you to the border, and not just to Garabogaz, the last 50 km are through unpaved road and would cost you an extra 10$ if you are hurrying and need to get a new taxi.

Turkmenbashi is a city in Turkmenistan.

Hitching out

North towards Garabogaz / Bekdas, Kazakhstan

Option 1: Get the city bus number 6 towards Awaza from the stop in front of the train station (Wokzal). It costs 50 tonne and passes every 20-30 minutes. It will take you out of the city and you can ask the driver to drop you off at the roundabout where the road starts towards the airport. From there you can hitchhike 15 km to another roundabout where the road divides towards the airport and towards Garabogaz - Kazakhstan.

Option 2: Get the intercity bus to Guwlymayak from the bus station in front of the train station. It costs 1 manat but there are very few per day. There is a little window where a lady sells tickets and you can ask for the timetable. Ask the driver to drop you on the road before turning in the junction and continue to hitchhike north.

Other useful info

If you are in a big hurry because your visa expires, a taxi from the train station will take you to the border. The driver will start at $100 for two people, but you can quickly negotiate down to $60 (or even $40 if you are patient). Just make sure they will really take you to the border, and not just to Garabogaz; the last 50 km after Garabogaz are over unpaved road and would cost you an extra $10 if you are hurrying and need to get a new taxi.
